William Carter Dibrell was born
July 2, 1829, Sparta, White County.
Tennessee, son of Anthony and Mildred
(Carter) Dibrell. His wife, Margaret
Caroline Jenkins, was born October 17, 1838,
Holly Springs, Marshall County, Mississippi,
daughter of James Hugh and Nancy (Harbert)
Jenkins. They were married April 14,
1857, Columbus, Colorado County.
Texas. They had two sons, Frank
Anthony and James (Jimmie) Crockett. They
also raised a daughter, Margaret Caroline's
niece, Nannie Lee Jenkins, born August 4,
1876, to J. Frank and Lucie (Newsome)
Jenkins, and died December 10, 1968,
Coleman, buried in Coleman.
William Carter
Dibrell served as a captain in Young's 8th
Regiment of Texas Infantry in the
Confederate Army. and was engaged in the
boot and leather business in New Orleans and
Galveston prior to coming to Coleman County
in 1883, purchasing a ranch in the Camp
Colorado area from Walter Erath. He
saw the need for improving his Longhorn
cattle herd. While on a visit to the
State Fair of Texas at Dallas in 1887, he
bought four head of registered Hereford
cattle from Gudgell and Simpson of
Independence, Missouri. Of the four
head purchased, one bull died of tick fever
before reaching the ranch and one cow choked
to death chewing on a salt sack. The
other cow, Breeze, was the base of the
Dibrell Hereford herd. The herd grew
from Breeze's heifers and new Hereford
bulls, carefully selected in a period when
registered cattle remained a novelty.
None of Breeze's heifer calves were ever
sold, always being retained to build up the
herd Breeze died in 1903; a few years later,
a marble shaft was erected on the Dibrell
land in memory of Breeze, proclaiming her as
the "mother of the Dibrell herds."
William Carter died
December 13, 1898, Coleman, and Margaret
Caroline, February 3, 1918, Coleman, both
buried in Coleman. At the time of W.
C.'s death, the cemetery area was open
range, so a rock and iron fence was built
around the lot to protect the grave from
wandering cattle.
