My great-grandfather Jacob Stegall was a cotton farmer near Leona, Leon County, in the 1860's. I found a cotton gin record where his cotton was brought to the gin in (I think 1868). And I also found a record that he was the past Master of the Leona Lodge of the Freemasons in 1859.
He was born about 1804 in North Carolina and moved to Perry County, Tennesse, as a young man. There he married Sarah White (b. 1813) about 1830 and had 9 children that I know of. He and his family moved to Texas about 1845 or 1846 and eventually settled in Leon County. My grandmother (who was his grandaughter) recalled having been told that he had 8 or 10 slaves before the Civil War, so I suppose he had a good-sized cotton farm.
I have been unable to find him in the 1860 or 1870 Census (overlooked, or hiding from the Census taker?). And I would like to know when he died. There should be a will or intestate record for him at the County Court House, and I would think that he had a tombstone, which may still be standing. I would like to learn if either of those could be found.
Can you suggest how I might obtain that information. Thanks very much, James H. Holden

I am looking for a burial in or around the Marquez, Owensville, Easterly area for my grandmother, who was Kate Hurley Benton. She died in 1939.
Kate's parents, William Wesley Hurley and Mary Ann Hurley are buried at the Owensville Cemetery, along with several other children. They had a pre-Civil War plantation in the area of Owensville. Kate moved to Marquez after she married T.S. Benton and they lived there a long time. In fact, my mother, one of their chilren, was born in Marquez. But I have looked at every list of every cemetary in the area on line and cannot find the mother anywhere.
I have notes indicating Kate Hurley Benton might be buried at Marquez, and I found a listing for a Hurley Cemetery at Marquez but there is only one grave listed. I wonder if there could be more graves that just aren't listed yet. If anyone could look at gravesites at that cemetery and see if Kate Hurley Benton is buried there, I would appreciate it. Thank you for your interest and time spent on this worthwhile project.
Anne Gardner

Benjamin Franklin HILL - my grandfather is suppose to have been born in Buffalo, TX on Feb 2, 1889. According to his death certificate, his parents were Ollie Dobbs (b. AL) and John Hill (b. AL).
The only thing I ever heard was that his father died when he was an infant or before he was born and his mother died when he was a small child.  As an orphan, he went to live with an older sister and her family.
Has anyone ever heard of my grandfather?  Betty

I would like to find out if Pauline J. BRITTON, who is buried there, along with her husband, Ralph John Britton, was a daughter of W. S. Jamison. He and his wife, Eva, are also buried in Hopewell. Ralph Britton is in my dad’s family tree and I can’t find what his wife’s, Pauline, maiden name was. I have both their obituaries and that information isn’t included. In a census I have found that the Jamisons did have a daughter named Pauline about the right age. I haven’t found anyone to confirm that Pauline Britton was that daughter, however.
If you have any knowledge of Pauline Britton, or of who has the official records for the cemetery, I would appreciate having that information. Thanks for your time.     Carolyn Lamberth Johnson

Hello. I am searching the above family names. I have been searching my great-grandmother for two years and two month ago, I finally located her. My great-grandmother was Sarah Ann ROBERTS. She was born on July 15, 1862 or 1863. Her death certificate does not mention any mother or father. She was married to my genealogy line William Alexander in Nacogdoches, Texas on March 7, 1897. They had 6 children together and only two children in their marriage survived into adulthood. Sarah age seems correct base on the 1870 census and the 1880 census. Her mother was listed as Flora Roberts on the 1870 census and on 1880 she is listed as Flora Goulsby. Her mother name was Flora Bonner base on her marriage record to Jack Goulsby on December 25, 1974. It seems he was an older man. They had one child from the marriage named Soloman Goulsby age 3 on the 1880 census. If you can help me with the connection or guide me to the right information in the town, I would appreciate the information. Thanks. plt@hot.rr.com

I have been searching for information on Richard Baxter King who was in Leon Co. from the late 1840's to his death in 1872.  I found him on the 1850 census, but that does not tell me much.
Does anyone have any other information on him?  Who was his wife, Polly, and how many children did he have?  Of which community was he a resident?  Anything would be appreciated.   G. Tilley

My great great grandfather, Jacob Stegall, was a cotton farmer who lived in Leon Co. in the 1860's.  I think he lived in or near Leona, as I once found a record that said he was "a past master of the Leona Masonic Lodge." I think it was in 1859.  He was born in TN and emigrated to Texas in the 1950's.  I have information about his family that I would be glad to share.  I would like to know when he died and where he is buried.  Any help would be appreciated.  James H.
