Thomas Jefferson Lancaster was born in Lewis County, Missouri, April
13, 1854, and came with his parents, Josiah Robert, born March 19, 1819
in Kentucky and Mary Jane (Land) Lancaster, born May 11, 1823, in Kentucky,
in 1872. They settled in Erath County and Thomas Jefferson attended
Add Ran College and graduated. He became a teacher, but during the
long vacations he helped with the sheep on his father’s ranch. Josiah
Robert died July 22, 1902; Mary Jane, June 1, 1906; both in Dallas.
T. J. decided to take a herd of sheep west and in 1876 arrived in Coleman
County between Home and Hay Creek. He bought a block of land, 200
acres, and a man named George Tabor built a good rock fence around the
pens and a shack for T. J. to live in. He had a lot of time to study
and write letters. When he was a teacher, one of his pupils meant
a lot to him, Fannie Belle Kemble, daughter of M. T. C. Kemble, November
19, 1836 in Kentucky - March 28, 1868 in Waxahachie and Fidelia S. Price,
August 19, 1842 in Kentucky - 1872 in Corsicana. T. C. and Fidelia
married December 21, 1858. Their children are: Capitola Florence,
November 22, 1859 - September 11, 1862; Sterling Price, March 17, 1862
- October 9,1862; and Fannie Belle, March 6, 1866. This family moved
to a ranch near Baird. In 1884, T. J. began going to Baird courting
Fannie Belle, now 18 years old. The life of the sheep camp with T.
J. seemed a very happy future for her. They were married July 20,
1884 at Baird. They moved to a house on Camp Creek. There was
very little housekeeping, as Fannie Belle preferred going along with
T. J. wherever the sheep were grazing and they kept a wagon well outfitted
for camping. For two years, they used the log house when necessary
and penned the sheep on their own place, located several miles away, during
shearing and other busy times. He bought a place west of Military
Road joining the first tract and in 1886 he built a new house. Bertha
May was born September 21, 1885, died May 22, 1887, buried at Trickham.
Four other children were born: Joe K., December 6,1887; Neta Kate, December
27, 1889; Thomas Ernest, September 28, 1892 and Elijah Robert (Lige), September
16, 1894.
T. J. had a new neighbor in 1892, his father, Josiah Robert, who bought
land and lived there for a number of years. The house and well, dating
from that year, are still in use and owned by the Lancaster family.
Thomas Jefferson passed away in Brownwood, October 4, 1929. Fannie
Belle stayed at the home place a short time, then moved to Santa Anna and
lived in the Kitty Baxter home for awhile. She then moved to an apartment
with Mrs. R. C. Gay, then moved back to live with Lige due to bad health.
On December 25, 1940, she went to be with her Lord, buried in Trickham.
