500 South Neches Street
Coleman, Texas

Legal Description:

The location, which was first addressed as 300 South Neches Street, was not included on any map before 1916.  By 1923, the address would become 500 South Neches Street, as the numbering would begin at Live Oak Street.

south side - 1916 map
The dwelling at 300 South Neches Street faced Neches Street (east), and had a porch on the east (front) side and also one one the west side.  The lot on which it was located occupied about one-quarter of this block.  There was a small shed or storage building located in the center of the lot.  There was a second dwelling on the southwest corner of the lot, which was addressed as 300 1/2 South Neches Street.

Sometime between 1916 and 1923, this lot was divided, and the west part was addressed as 507 West Walnut Street.

south side - 1923 map
By 1923, the address of this dwelling had changed to 500 South Neches Street, with an alternate address of 300 South Neches Street.  The structure is unchanged from 1916, except the front porch is shown as 2 story, rather than 1 story as shown in 1916.  This could be an error on the part of the map maker, or it could have always be always been 2 story, or it could have been enlarged between 1916 and 1923.

Between 1923 and 1930, the dwelling located at 500 South Neches Street faced east (South Neches Street), and sometime after 1923 the original building was either removed and replaced with a similar dwelling, or it was enlarged, which I believe to be the case, by being added to on the northwest corner and the south side.  The front door was change to the north side (facing West Walnut Street) and it was then addressed as 503 West Walnut Street.
