south side - 1904 map
In 1904, this one story dwelling, with a porch on the northeast corner, was located at what became 402 South Commercial Avenue.  Different street addresses or identifiers were in use at this time.  The alley on the west side of this location, between South Commercial Avenue and Concho Street was not in existence at this time.

south side - 1909 map
In 1909, the same one story dwelling was located at this location.  An alley on the west side of this location, between South Commercial Avenue and Concho Street had been added by this time.  The big "2" indicates the lot number.

south side - 1916 map
By 1916, a porch had been added on the southwest corner of this dwelling, and an auto garage added to the west side of the property on lot 1, which would become 400 South Commercial Avenue.  The auto garage was probably accessed from the alley on the west side.  Also this map shows this dwelling to extend into lot 3, which would become 406 South Commercial Avenue.

south side - 1923 map
The addresses on this map are shown as 400 and 402 South Commercial Avenue, but the 1929 directory (below) refers to a residence and a tinner at 400 South Commercial Avenue.

"In 1962, Safeway Stores, Inc. was located at 402 South Commercial Avenue.  O. J. Forbes was the manager."  (Polk's - Coleman City Directory, 1962.)  (Note:  In 1929 lots 1, 2 and 3 were known as 400 South Commercial Avenue; in 1962, lots 1 and 2 were known as 402 South Commercial Avenue; and by 1983, lots 1 and 2 were known as 400 South Commercial Avenue.)

At some time 400 South Commercial Avenue and 402 South Commercial Avenue became one business and were known as 400 South Commercial Avenue.
