On maps before 1916, a vacant lot is shown at this location. In 1916 an auto garage for the dwelling at 402 South Commercial Avenue was located on the west side of the lot.
In 1927, Sturges & Gibbs
opened at 400 South Commercial Avenue, in what was known as the Shore
Building. The building had previously been occupied by Crawford Wholesale Grocery prior to Sturges & Gibbs remodeling of the building in 1927. Sturges & Gibbs moved a two more times in the next 12 years ... see history at 108 South Commercial Avenue. "In 1929, Charles C. McIntyre, is shown as "rest" (this is shown as a dwelling on the 1923 map, so I do not know what "rest" stand for- could it be restaurant?) at 400 South Commercial Avenue and his wife Ina, are shown to be residing at this same address. William C. McElrath is shown as a tinner at this address. He, and his wife Mora, are shown with a residence address of P. O. Box 485." (Coleman City Directory, 1929 - Hudspeth.)
"In 1962, Safeway Stores, Inc. was located at 402 (South) Commercial Avenue. O. J. Forbes was the manager." (Polk's - Coleman City Directory, 1962.) (Note: In 1929 lots 1, 2 and 3 were known as 400 South Commercial Avenue; in 1962, lots 1 and 2 were known as 402 South Commercial Avenue; and by 1983, lots 1 and 2 were known as 400 South Commercial Avenue.)
