On maps before 1909, a vacant lot is shown at this location. In 1909, 1916 and 1923, the dwelling located at 402 South Commercial Avenue, extended onto lot 3, which would become 406 South Commercial Avenue. By 1930, a 50 x 100 brick building had been built on lots 3 and 4, and were known as 406 - 408 South Commercial Avenue. However, it appears from the 1930 photograph below, each side was being used by a different business. By 1948, the building at 406 - 408 South Commercial Avenue had been partitioned into two buildings (or businesses).
"In
1948, Gordon's Garage was located at 406 South Commercial Avenue,
and owned by C. J. Gordon. Their telephone number was 5031.
Their yellow page ad read, "Gordon's Garage - Complete Service on all Makes
of Cars - Specialize in Motor Tune-Up and Carburation." Also located
at this address was the Coleman Magneto and Electric Shop.
Their telephone number was 2941. According to the Yellow Pages, they
repaired speedometers, as well as magnetos and electrical items." (Southwestern
