406 South Commercial Avenue
Coleman, Texas

Legal Description: Original Townsite of Coleman, Block 17, Lot 3.

On maps before 1909, a vacant lot is shown at this location.  In 1909, 1916 and 1923, the dwelling located at 402 South Commercial Avenue, extended onto lot 3, which would become 406 South Commercial Avenue.   By 1930, a 50 x 100 brick building had been built on lots 3 and 4, and were known as 406 - 408 South Commercial Avenue.  However, it appears from the 1930 photograph below, each side was being used by a different business.  By 1948, the building at 406 - 408 South Commercial Avenue had been partitioned into two buildings (or businesses).

east side - about 1930

About 1930, the Coleman Ice Cream Company was located at 406 South Commercial Avenue.  The Holley Chevrolet Company, which was located at 400-408 South Commercial Avenue, had been located at this address before this time, as a part of their sign was still hanging on the upper part of the building.

Interesting items to note in this photograph include: "Curb Service" (remember when you could honk your car horn or flash your car lights, and a waitress or "car hop" would come out and take and serve your order), "Banana Splits 15 cents," and "Sundaes 10 cents."

south side - 1948 map
According to the 1948 telephone directory, auto services occupied at least the east (front) part of this building, but according to this 1930 map, the rear part was a grocery warehouse.  Could 408 South Commercial Avenue have been used by this auto service business, as I have not found any business located there.
"In 1948, Gordon's Garage was located at 406 South Commercial Avenue, and owned by C. J. Gordon.  Their telephone number was 5031.  Their yellow page ad read, "Gordon's Garage - Complete Service on all Makes of Cars - Specialize in Motor Tune-Up and Carburation."  Also located at this address was the Coleman Magneto and Electric Shop.  Their telephone number was 2941.  According to the Yellow Pages, they repaired speedometers, as well as magnetos and electrical items." (Southwestern States Telehone Company, Coleman - Novice, Texas Telephone Directory, June 1948.)

"In 1962, the building at 406 South Commercial Avenue was vacant." (Polk's - Coleman City Directory, 1962.)
