William Washington Weathered was
born March 1, 1846, Milam, Texas, son of
James Madison and Elvira Catherine (Neely)
Weatherred. His wife, Anna Margaret
Brown, was born January 13, 1848, Sabine
County, daughter of Martin John and Teresa
(Haines) Brown. W. W. and Anna married
December 26, 1871, in Hemphill. They
had ten children, six of whom came to
Coleman with them: James (Jim) Martin;
Teresa (Katie) Catherine, Anna Eliza, Agnes
(Mrs. Henry C. Jones); William Marcus; and
John Sumter. W. W. served with B. C. Terry's
Regiment of Dismounted Texas Cavalry during
the Civil War, came to Coleman in December,
1903, and opened a general mercantile store,
W.W. Weatherred and Son. They
purchased land in several areas of the
county and had farming and cattle
interests. They were members of the
Methodist Church. W. W. died March 10,
1932, Coleman, and Anna Weatherred died May
18, 1938, Coleman, both buried in Coleman.
James (Jim) Martin
Weathered was born July 16, 1874 (see James
Martin Weatherred Family). Jim
Weathered died August 1, 1933, and Ola
Weathered died August 11, 1974, both buried
in Coleman.
Katie Weatherred,
born August 12, 1876, and died October 26,
1907, Coleman, buried in Coleman.
Anna Weatherred,
born May 31, 1878, Hill County, and died
June 26, 1960, Coleman, buried in the
Coleman Cemetery.
Agnes Weathered
born June 3, 1880, Milam, married December
12, 1906, Henry C. Jones. They made
their home in Marlin, and had two sons:
William Henry and Walton Marcus. Agnes
Weatherred Jones died December 14, 1966,
buried in Calvary Cemetery, Marlin.
William Marcus
Weathered born February 5, 1887, Hill
County, his wife, Lottie John Stevens, born
July 10, 1885, Hill County, daughter of John
A. and Elizabeth (Gathings) Stevens, were
married December 30, 1912, Hill
County. They had no children.
Marcus attended
Southwestern University and the University
of Texas. He was an attorney and
served a term as Coleman County Judge.
An active member of the First Methodist
Church, he taught a Sunday School class for
54 years; he also served as trustee and
steward. He was also an active member
of the Masonic Lodge: a 33rd Degree Mason,
Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Texas in
1936, a director of the Masonic Home and
School, and a Chairman of the Jurisprudence
of the Lodge. He served on the Board
of Directors of Overall Memorial Hospital in
Coleman. Marcus died July 12, 1961,
Coleman and Lottie died June 25, 1979,
Coleman, both buried in Coleman.
John Sumter
Weatherred, born August 5, 1891, Hill
County, his wife Louise Dibrell, born April
6, 1896, daughter of James Crockett and
Margaret Virginia (Mooney) Dibrell (see William
Carter Dibrell), were married November
18, 1925, Echo Ranch. They have four
children: Margaret; Mary Louise; Helen; and
William Sumter. Sumter Weatherred had
farming and cattle interests until his
retirement due to ill health. He was a
member of the First Methodist Church, the
Masonic Lodge, and the American
Legion. A veteran of World War I, he
served in Europe with Company D, 314th Motor
Supply Train. He died June 4, 1976,
Coleman, buried in Coleman. Louise
Weatherred is a member of the First
Methodist Church and the Captain William
Buckner Chapter, Daughters of the American
Revolution. Louise is the last
surviving organizing member. She has
held every office and still attends the
meetings.
Margaret
Weatherred, born October 6, 1927, Coleman,
her husband, Donald Maurice Saunders, born
October 2, 1919, son of John Warner and Lona
(Lederer) Saunders, were married October 8,
1945 in Coleman (see John Saunders).
They have one son, Thomas (Tommy) Donald,
born November 27, 1963. They reside in
Coleman, where Donald and Tommy are engaged
in farming and ranching and Margaret is the
secretary to a local physician.
Mary Louise
Weatherred, born December 24, 1929, Coleman,
and her husband, Joe Alfred McMahan, born
August 17, 1921, son of Clyde and Vinnie
(Caplinger) McMahan, and have three
children: Louise (Mrs. Alton Biggs); Anita
Jo (Mrs. Steven G. Mitchell); and Travis
Weatherred. They reside in McKinney.
Helen Weatherred,
born June 12, 1933, Coleman. She
married (1) Billy Joe Brown January 10,
1953, in Fort Worth. She married (2) Wayne
Curtis Cross, October 11, 1980,
Richardson. She is the mother of three
children: Ronald Rushing, Linda Lois, and
Timothy (Tim) Todd. Ronald Rushing
born May 28, 1954, Fort Worth, and June 26,
1976, he and Bonnie Jean Kennedy, were
married at Jasper. Bonnie is the
adopted daughter of William H. and Tomiko
(Kanamura) Kennedy. They have one son,
Mark Thomas, born June 22, 1978; Irving.
Linda Lois, born July 9, 1958,
Littlefield. Linda and Jon Matthew
Tanner married August 23, 1980, Dallas, and
reside in Bay City; Timothy Todd, born
September 17, 1960, Fort Worth. On
April 23, 1983, he and Nydia Kaye Slate,
married in Coleman, daughter of Archie and
Patsy (Whitehead) Slate. Ronald and
Tim reside with their families in Coleman,
where they are engaged in farming and
operate a service station. Helen and
Wayne Cross reside in Houston (see John
Wesley Slate).
William Sumter
Weatherred, born August 24, 1935, Coleman,
his wife, Melba LaVerne Harrison, born June
12, 1933, Ovalo, daughter of John Lloyd and
Lula Emaline (Williams) Harrison, were
married October 29, 1960, Ovalo. They
have one son, John Mark, born September 28,
1965, Coleman, and reside in Coleman, where
Sumter is engaged in farming and ranching
and LaVerne is employed at the Coleman
County Agricultural Stabilization and
Conservation Service office.
