James "Jim" A. Jameson, born August 12, 1858, died December 8, 1931, the son of William Green and Martha Louisa (Grisham) Jameson (see Jesse N. Sewell), married Mattie Jane Smith, born May 24, 1862 at Keokuk, Iowa, died July 14, 1959, buried in Coleman, daughter of John William Smith of Scottish descent, and Mary Elizabeth Griffey of Irish descent.  Jim and Mattie and one son, Carey Buris, came west and lived in Tom Green County for a short time (now Coke County), then in 1882, came to Coleman County when the town was a settlement of rough lumber houses, wagon yards and a store or two.  They lived in a log house and dug-out west of Coleman for a year, where another son, Emmett Clarence, was born.  They built another house and lived there for four or five years.  The log house and dug-out was located near where the Ivan Hill home now stands a few miles west of Coleman.  They then bought land in 1891, six miles north of Coleman, on the Coleman to Baird road, the southwest corner of the land running to the Indian Creek School grounds.  They built a house there with three big rooms, three large porches and a hallway, typical of many early homes.  A three room second story was added shortly before the youngest child, Mary, was born.  J. A. Barton did the carpentry work.

Farming was the occupation of the family.  A nice orchard and garden was put in for the family use.  All early settlers had their necessities of chicken, cows and hogs for their food supplies.  Jim rented a parcel of land south of part of his land for years until his son Ray bought it from Sealy.  Mattie Jameson said on her 90th birthday, “It was invigorating growing up in a new town and country.  Recreation was simple and usually amounted to putting the children in a wagon and going visiting for a day or two.”  The Jim Jamesons also owned 1200 to 1300 acres of land in Taylor County.  They later built a smaller house consisting of six rooms on the west side of the land near the Baird road.  Daughter Ada Scott and children lived in the two-story house for about two years.  Son, Vernon K. and wife, Annette, came to run the farm.  They built a small house just east of Mrs. Jameson’s home.  Soon after, Mrs. Mattie Jameson bought a home in Coleman, selling the farm to Vernon K. and lived there the remainder of her life.  Mr. and Mrs. James Allen Jameson were Baptist in religion.  The two daughters, Ada and Mary had advanced music education.  Ada taught music.  Both attended Mary Hardin College in Belton.  All children attended Indian Creek School for their elementary schooling.  The children of James Allen and Mattie Jameson are:
