During the period of years from 1906 to 1929, four Hudson brothers made their move from Hill County, Texas to new permanent locations in Coleman County.  Frank, Roy, Tom Jr. “Cowboy,” and Joe were sons of Thomas Jefferson and Mary Elizabeth (Brannon) Hudson.  They were born on their parents’ land located between Aquilla and Whitney (see Joe Hudson, Roy Hudson and Thomas J. Hudson, Jr.).  Mr. Hudson was a cow and horseman, and expanded his holdings by purchasing land in Comanche and Coleman Counties.  On October 20, 1881, Frank was born in a log cabin, the third child in a family of thirteen -- five boys and eight girls.  Frank attended school at Red Point, which was a non-graded school for both boys and girls, each progressing as quickly as they could and wished.  Later, he attended Hillsboro Military Academy, and was one of two selected to go on to Fort Riley, Kansas.  Just before his twenty-first birthday in 1902, he decided he could no longer remain under parental rule, and took off for the West.  While Frank was away from home, his father, Tom had purchased band in Coleman County.  This ranch was known as the old Newt Ferguson Ranch and was located near old Atoka on Jim Ned Creek.  In May 1906, Frank and Roy loaded up their covered wagon with all the necessary tools and supplies, and began the long journey to their new home.  They found Coleman a friendly town.  Uncle Dave and Henry Paddleford were the first folks they met.  Roy came down with the mumps, so Frank put Roy on the train and sent him back to Papa.

Frank joined the Odd Fellows Lodge and belonged to Tecumseh Lodge Number 552.  There were several young people his own age - one of whom was the young lady school teacher, Maude Elizabeth McFarlane, daughter of J. R. and Louisa McFarlane of Baird.  After about two years of courtship, Frank and Maude were married in Baird, May 1, 1912.  After their marriage, they bought a small farm of their own near Novice.  On November 4, 1914, they had a baby daughter, Elsie Marie, and Virginia, March 23, 1920.  In 1922, they sold this place, and purchased a larger one located three miles east of Novice on Rough Creek from J. N. Shannon, rancher and philanthropist.  Here they built their home, and began farming - oats, corn, and maize were raised for cow, horse, and mule feed.  Cotton was grown as a “money” crop.  They started raising and building up their herd of Hereford cattle. He raised a few polo ponies, some of which he sold to Will Gay and Theo Dunman, polo playing enthusiasts.

Both daughters went to school at Novice.  Since the school only had ten grades, Elsie Marie graduated from Baird High School in 1932.  She entered Texas Technological College that fall, and received her degree in 1936.  Virginia graduated from Novice High School, which by now was fully accredited, in 1937.  She enrolled in Texas Tech and received her BA degree in 1941.  Frank and Maude were always active in community, church and school affairs.  Frank served many years on the Novice School Board, was a long time Director on the Board of the Central Colorado River Authority, and was a member of the Coleman Masonic Lodge from which he received his fifty year pen as a Master Mason.  Maude E. Hudson passed away April 11, 1943, buried in Coleman.  Frank lived alone after Maude’s death until September of 1945 when his daughter, Virginia, and her family joined him in the ranching business.

On November 8, 1941, Virginia married James W. Mullins, son of Mrs. Sue B. Mullins of Grapevine.  James attended Texas Tech also, and the two had been engaged for some time.  James was with the U.S. Army, and was stationed at Camp Bowie, Brownwood, with the 144th Infantry Division.  Virginia was teaching grade school at Silver Valley.  After Pearl Harbor, December 8th, James was put on a Troop Train and went to the West Coast.  After doing patrol duty all along the Pacific coast, he went to Officer’s Training School at Fort Benning, Georgia.  James was among the group in the initial landing in North Africa.  He was returned to the States about two weeks before his baby daughter, Gina Sue, arrived April 13, 1943.  On September 2, 1945, (V-J Day), Marian, their second child, was born in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.  James received his discharge from the Army, and they returned to Texas.  James (called “Moon” by all his family and friends) had very little experience with ranch life, but he did have a deep love for the outdoors, horses, and cows, and under the capable supervision of Frank Hudson, he was exposed to all the facets of farm and ranch life.  James Hudson was born July 30, 1947 in Brownwood and Melissa, March 18, 1962 in Coleman.  After a long illness, Frank passed away March 21, 1967, buried in Coleman.

Moon and Virginia own and operate the ranch, and are actively engaged in the cattle business.  Moon has been active in school affairs - serving on the School Board for a number of years, replaced Frank Hudson upon his retirement on the Board of Directors of CCRA for many years, and is a member of Atoka Lodge Number 573.  Virginia will begin her nineteenth year as teacher of 5th and 6th Grades, Novice ISD this fall.  Sixteen of these years she served as the Elementary Principal.  She is a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha International, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, and Association of Texas Professional Educators.  All of the Mullins children graduated from Novice High School.  Gina is married to William (Bill) Grant, and they live in Bronte.  Bill is Field Supervisor for the Union of Texas.  Gina works in the Business Office for Bronte ISD.  They have three sons - Bill Jr., Don, and Craig.  Marian and Jimmy are graduates of Texas Tech University.  Marian was married a few years to Dr. William Holton.  Presently, she is living in Washington, D.C., and is Software Manager for Institute for Law and Social Research.  Jimmy married Charlotte Frick, and they live in Claude, Texas.  He is District Manager Animal Industry Department for American Cyanamid Company.  They have two children - Marni Michelle and James Lynn.  Melissa is a senior student in Angelo State University.

Elsie Marie married (1) James Norval Bryant in a home ceremony September 1, 1935.  They lived in Hobbs, New Mexico, for a number of years.  She married (2) Mac McGrane, who was in the Air Force.  After the war ended, they moved to Flagstaff, Arizona.  Frances Patrick was born June 11, 1947, died November, 1975.  From Flagstaff, they moved to Denver, Colorado.  After Mac’s death, she married (3) a Retired Air Force Colonel, Lew Chester, who lived only about two years after the marriage.  Elsie still resides in the home she built in Denver, along with a lady live-in companion.
