Thomas F. Hickox and Leo Ann (Leona Anne) Payne married August 6, 1855; each had been married before and had a little daughter.  T. F. Hickox and Susie Mills were married November 13, 1875 and their daughter, Lela Pearl was born August 27, 1880 in Bell County, Texas.  Leo Ann (Leona Anne) Payne was married to Percy Hamilton Kent in Tennessee.  After his death, she came to Texas, and their daughter, Percy Hamilton Kent was born February 25, 1883 in Sulphur Bluff in Hopkins County.  T. F. Hickox was born January 17, 1855 in Austin (see James Martin Hickox).  Leo Ann Payne was born in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, May 27, 1864.  At the time of their marriage, he was ranching and she was teaching school.  Their first daughter, Cleta Mae, was born August 2, 1886 in Bell County and their next ten children were born in Coleman County.  They are: F. Reavis (daughter), November 12, 1887, at Mathews Ranch; Hattie Opal, February 2, 1889 at Beck’s Ranch; Benneta Evelyn (Bennie), February 25, 1890 at Beck’s Ranch; Thomas Penn, November 4, 1891 at Beck’s Ranch; Maggie Zola, October 1, 1893 at Glen Cove; Polly Kate, March 24, 1895 at Glen Cove; James Truman, May 8, 1897 at Glen Cove; Marshall Delbert, December 11, 1898 at Glen Cove; Jeff Mills, June 20, 1900 at Glen Cove; Charles Newell, June 21, 1902 at Talpa at the old rock hotel.  In 1897 six of the Hickox children were attending Glen Cove School; Percy Kent, Pearl, Cleta, Reavis, Opal and Bennie (all girls).  Tom, Zola, Polly and perhaps Jim attended Glen Cove School as they became of age at later dates.

The family moved to a ranch in Pecos County in approximately 1903.  The town of Iraan stands today on what was the upper pasture of their ranch.  They also had a home in Sheffield so the younger children could attend school.  They later had a dry goods store in Sheffield.  After selling the ranch property, they moved to Rankin where they had another dry goods store.  They were affectionately called Mother and Papa Hickox - never grandmother or grandfather.  T. F. Hickox died March 14, 1927, Leo Ann August, 17, 1946, both buried at Rankin.

(1) Pearl married Jim Cooper in Coleman County August, 1899.  She died July 16, 1923, buried in Rankin.  Two children: a girl and a boy.

(2) Percy Kent married R. A. Dunbar at Robert Lee, April 20, 1900.  He died in Kerrville.  Prior to his death, Rob Dunbar was appointed Federal Judge.  He continued to practice law in Kerrville as long as he was able.  Percy died in Fort Stockton, April 13, 1964.  Three daughters; two are still living: (2a) Ouida, wife of Guy C. Moses, died March 27, 1984, and is buried in Fort Stockton by the side of her husband and her mother.  Ouida’s daughter, Patsy, and her husband, Guy Proctor, and son now live in Barrington, Cook County, Illinois.  (2b) Vera Mae (Pat), widow of Cecil Marshall, lives in Dallas;  (2c) Robby lives in Dallas with her husband, J. F. W. (Sam) Hannay.  They have a son and two grandsons, also living in Dallas.

(3) Cleta married Clarence C. Clark December 26 1904 in Ozona.  The 1900 Coleman County census shows that he was born January 1883 in Texas, the second son of James L. a farmer, born May 1836 in Pennsylvania and Mary E. Clark, a school teacher, born October 1847 in Texas.  He had a brother older, Samuel S., August 1878, and two younger sisters, Jennie J., March 1885 and Texas R., July 1887, all born in Texas.  (The Hickox family spelled the name Clarke.)  I do not know when the Clarks came to Coleman County, nor how long they remained.  Cleta Clark died June 18, 1905, buried in Sheffield.

(4) Reavis married (1) Thomas Guilford Clay December 23, 1903 at Ballinger (see Thomas Guilford Clay).  Guilford Clay was teaching school when he met Reavis and later after she completed her education, they taught either in the same place or in towns nearby each other.  Maurine Oma was born in Sheffield February 10, 1906, and the only child.  On January 28, 1919, Guilford and Reavis were divorced in Fort Stockton. Later on they each married a couple of times and each had stepchildren.  In 1921, Reavis and Maurine went to Reno, Nevada, then to Sacramento, California.  Reavis Clay married (2) Maxwell Charles Salter March 27, 1926 in Lankershim, California.  He had three sons, William N., Robert and Fred and a daughter, Maxine Salter (Williams).  They were all small when they married and Reavis raised them.  Later Reavis and “Mack” were divorced; he was killed in the 1940’s.  The children thought a great deal of Reavis and continued to visit her the rest of her life.  Reavis Salter married (3) Christian (Chris) Pilker in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the Little Church of the Last Frontier March 12, 1947.  He had two daughters, Pearl Pilker and Esther Sattler, Christian Pilker died January 25, 1969, buried in North Hollywood.  Reavis retired from the State Highway Department shortly after she and Chris were married.  She came to Sacremento to live with her daughter in November 1972, died July 14, 1976, buried in Sacramento.

(5) Opal married Will Nix at Ozona May 7, 1908.  One daughter, Maxine, who married (1) Lee Watson Bettis, they were divorced, she married (2) Jack Young, and moved to Isabel, South Dakota, one daughter, Guila Maurine Bettis and her husband, Jim (James) Miller, have a daughter, Melanie Massen, who lives with her husband, James (Jim), and little son, Jim, in Bismarck, North Dakota.  The parents of Jim Miller live in Rapid City, South Dakota and, I believe, he has a sister living in Coleman, Texas.  For a number of years, Opal Nix was the Postmistress at Rankin, and her husband, Bill Nix, owned the barbershop there.  He was well known for his calf roping at the rodeos.  Bill Nix and daughter, Maxine, passed away in the early 1950’s and Opal August 16, 1972, all buried at Rankin.

(6) Benneta Evelyn, affectionately called “Bennie” died January 4, 1903, buried at Talpa.

Hickox Mercantile or Drygoods store in Rankin, later moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico.  He died December 31, 1975 at Pecos, buried at Carlsbad.  They had no children.

(8) Zola married Robert (Bob) D. McSpadden at Ozona, November 30, 1909.  In 1921 Zola and Bob bought the hotel in Sheffield from her sister, Reavis and they operated it for a time.  They had three boys: R. D., Jr., Jeff Rae and Walter Clay.  (8a) R. D., Jr. married Montie Powell, children, Barbara, Neva Zoe and R. D “Boogie.”  R. D. died May 1955.  Montie, and “Boogie” remain in Rankin, and several grandchildren.  Barbara and Don Hansen and children live in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  Neva Zoe and Dickie Nesbitt and family live in Mesquite.  (8b) Walter Clay and Pansy had two daughters, Ann and Waldene.  He died June 1974; Pansy lives with Ann and Ken Batson in Hobbs, New Mexico.  Waldene and Robert Crane and their four children live in Odessa.  Both R. (9) Polly married Cal C. Childress June 25, 1912 in San Angelo.  For years he worked on the Lane Ranch near Alpine; later they moved to Odessa, where they died within a few days of each other in June 1974.  Their children are: (9a) Lleldon is a widower and has one son.  (9b) Leona is a widow and has two sons, Pat lives in New York and Jimmy D. lives in San Angelo.  After the death of another daughter, (9c) Ruby who married Joe Miles, her two sons, Jerry and Gene, came to Odessa and lived with Polly and Cal.  (9d) Virgie Opal lives with her husband, George Denton, in Globe, Arizona, have eleven children.  (9e) Willard (Bill) and family live in Odessa.  (9f) Polly Catherine lives with her husband, Cash Best, and family in San Jose, California.

(10) James (Jim) married (1) Jo Shields (see William Shields), a niece of Cal Childress, have a son, Jake, living with his wife, Evelyn, and two children in Lawton, Oklahoma.  Jim and Jo divorced.  He married (2) Melba, one son, Mike.  They were divorced.  Jim Hickox was a rancher with his father, and he also worked around the oil fields.  He was living with his third wife in Snyder, when he died December 23, 1950, buried in Rankin.  He served in the Army in WWI.

(11) Marshall D. left home when he was young and not much is known about him.  He died May 25, 1972 in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.  He also served in the Army in WWI.

(12) Jeff Mills and his wife, Lela (Hudson) had no children, but he adopted her son, Ford, by a former marriage.  Ford and Dell had several sons.  Jeff followed the other brothers in ranching and oil field work.  He was working for Carl Cromwell when he drilled the Santa Rita Discovery well in May 1923 with the Texon Oil and Land Company, which opened the vast Permian Basin oil reservoir south of Mitchell County.  He died February 23, 1971 and Ford died a few months later.  Lela lives in Odessa, and grandsons live in the Fort Worth area.

(13) Charles (Charley) married Irene Blackwell in 1923.  He was no exception from his brothers, he followed them by working with his father, ranching when he was a teenager, and after he married, went to work on the Santa Rita #1 in Reagan County discovery completed in 1923.  He died March 5, 1973, buried in San Angelo, where his widow, Irene, lives.  Three children:  (13a) I. Newell (Skeet) lives in Mobile, Alabama with his wife, Ruby, and two sons and two daughters, and four grandchildren.  (13b) Thomas Fenton lives in Indonesia with his wife, Jean, and family.  (13c) Charlene Reavis Albert is associated with the M Systems Groceries in San Angelo.  Three children: Jim and family are overseas.  Bill is a student at Angelo State.  Susie is a nurse in Kerrville, has one son.

In researching the genealogy of the Hickox family, the name is spelled twelve different ways, and it was learned these Hickoxes are cousins of James Butler Hickok, “Wild Bill” who died at Deadwood, South Dakota, August 2, 1876.
