INTRODUCTION

The goal of this project is to present genealogical and historical details about Smith County, Texas.  This website is part of The TxGenWeb Project and The USGenWeb Project, a group of volunteers dedicated to providing free data for researchers.  My name is Donna Sims Conner and I am pleased to be the Coordinator for Smith County.  We rely on volunteers to grow and maintain our websites.  Several of the counties in Texas are in need of coordinators.  If you are interested in becoming a county coordinator, please review the Volunteer Requirements and complete the Experience Questionnaire.  We appreciate your contributions!

Smith County was organized, geographically created and given its name on April 11th, 1846.  It was named in honor of General James Smith, born in Spartanburg District, South Carolina on September 10, 1792.  He came to Texas in 1834 and settled in Nacogdoches.  He was a distinguished officer in the war for Texas Independence.

Smith County is located in the northeastern region of Texas.  It lies between the 32nd and 33rd parallels, and is bounded on the east by the 95,54' meridian and on the west by the 95,36' meridian.  The county seat is Tyler.  The city of Tyler was given its name in honor of John Tyler, tenth president of the United States.
