Smith County is located in the north eastern region of Texas and the county seat is Tyler. The county was created in 1846 from part of Nacogdoches County and is named after James Smith, who was a general suring the Texas Revolution and lived in neighboring Rusk County. Tyler is the largest city in northeast Texas and is named for John Tyler, the 10th president of the USA.
