William Owen Williams Sheriff of Henderson Co. Athens, Texas
Is a grandson of Andrew Williams, who was a typical farmer, and lived in Ala. He later moved from Ala to Florida where his son Owen, who is the father of our present subject, was reared. In due time Owen married Miss Mary Tindel, who became the mother of eight children and who is yet living, while 5 of the children have gone to their reward. The father and husband died in 1874. He was also a farmer, following in the footsteps of his father and in turn giving direction to the life of his son. June 21, 1862, William was born in the state of Florida, where he remained a short time, but later in his early childhood he lived in Ala. and still later in Henderson County, where he attended the common schools of the country and labored on a farm. Having been reared on the farm he learned to love it and adopted it as his vocation, and early in life began farming on his own account. He has been married twice, first to Miss Sudie Cantrell, who lived eight years after the wedding. After two years from her death he married Miss Octavia Strother, who still lives. On coming to Texas the family stopped in Smith County first, but 29 years ago Mr. Williams came to Henderson County where he has lived continuously since. He is now serving his second term as Sheriff of the county. His easy choice and over whelming re-election are evidence of his popularity as an officer and the esteem in which he is held by the voters in his county. He is not only watchful and trust-worthy as an officer, but is quite genial and obliging as a citizen and man of affairs. He numbers his friends by the hundred and is one of those men who seem to have the interest of others at heart as well as who is determined to right well perform the duties of his office and meet the sacred obligations that are in trusted to him. He furnishes a good object lesson to the farmer boys of the country in showing what a boy can accomplish on the farm, if he only has a purpose to do so. Mr. Williams is a good friend and is willing to sacrifice for the public good.
