Col. T. F. Murchison
Col. T. F. Murchison was born in Madison county,
Tennessee Feb. 9, 1828. He was
raised in Marshall county, Miss. He came from Mississippi to
Texas in Feb. 1848,
settling at Crockett, Texas. He resided there until June 29, 1855
when he came to
Athens, which has been his place of residence ever since. His
first work in Athens
was selling goods for Dr. Collins for whom he
worked three years. He engaged in the
mercantile business for himself in 1859, at which he was very
successful. At the
breaking out of the Civil War, he in company with Capt.
Warren, raised a company of
cavalry for the Confederate service. The company was dismounted
and Col.
Murchison came home. While he did not see service in the field,
he was in the service
of the Confederacy during the whole War in various positions with
the rank and pay of
captain.
In 1885 he engaged in the banking business in which he is still
engaged, being
president of the First National Bank of Athens, one of the solid
financial institutions of
the country, and which does a good business.
Col. Murchison married Miss Mary Royall Dec. 1,
1857. He has raised six children of
whom four are now living, three sons and one daughter. One son, D.
R. is one of the
leading business men of Athens. He does a large general
merchandise and supply
business, and is universally liked by everybody that knows him.
He is a man of the
most exemplary character and commands the respect and confidence
of everybody.
Another son, John W., assists D. R.
in the management of his business and is a man
of substantial character and fine standing. A daughter is the
wife of Judge A. B.
Watkins, on of the prominent lawyers of the
state and who has held the office of
district judge. The other son is Dr. T. M. Murchison,
now of Denver, Colo. He is
associated with a noted specialist in that city and has a fine
prospect of future
success. The doctor is not only skilled in his profession calling
but he is a gentleman
of flue literary culture and of polished manners and unblemished
character.
Col. Murchison is a vigorous man for his years, which fact is due
largely to a life of
strict temperance in all things. He has been a great success in
every respect and is a
fine illustration at the truth that patient industry, wise
economy and temperate and
moral habits insure success to those who make such their rule of
conduct in life.
The colonel could not be with his old friends at this reunion,
which will doubtless be
regretted as much by his many friends as himself.
