Sam Holland
The youngest of three sons, Sam Holland was born at Evergreen
Alabama, January 4th, 1889. At the age of six years he came to
Texas
with his parents, D. P. and J. V. Holland who settled at first
near
Amarillo, but a year later came to Henderson county, and settled
in the
Walnut Creek community where Mr. Holland was reared. His father
died three years after the family came to this county at which
time Sam
was ten years of age. He was called upon to assist his two older
brothers and his mother in gaining a livelihood for the family,
and
paying for the farm for which the father had contracted.
Determining upon a professional career, after he had finished the
course in the community school and secured a degree at Mayo
College, Commerce, Mr. Holland was successful in his race for the
office of district clerk, being elected to that office in 1912
and serving
two terms.
During his tenure of office he devoted his spare time to the
study of
law and was admitted to the bar in 1915, a year before finishing
his
term in office. He obtained his Federal license in 1918. Once
more an
aspirant for office, Mr. Holland was elected county attorney in
1916,
and served two terms. On his retirement from this office he
engaged
in private practice until 1923 when he was appointed district
attorney
by Governor Neff to fill an unexpired term. In this office he
served
eighteen months and then retired again to private practice. At
the
present time he is chairman of the County Democratic Executive
Committee.
Mr. Holland was married December 21, 1916 to Miss Jaunita
Humphries, a member of one of the pioneer families of the county.
They have two little girls, Virginia aged seven and Jacqueline,
aged
four years.
Having already achieved success that would be creditable to a
much
older man and blessed with a family of which he is justly proud,
perhaps no greater reward has come to him than the satisfaction
he
must feel that the plucky little woman who fought such a good
fight in
the interest of her orphan children, had the happy privilege
before she
passed away of seeing her son achieve in great measure the
ambition
her mother love inspired in him and her toil permitted him to
win.
Sam Holland is an outstanding member of the local bar and his
ability
is recognized in that he is on one side or the other of
practically every
important case coming before the local courts.
