Athens Weekly Review
Dec. 3, 1925
Rev. Charles Jewel Williford
Charles Jewel Williford, native of Yazoo county, Miss.,
where he was
born March 28, 1889, came to Texas in 1898 and to Henderson
county in
1902. His parents settled in the Fincastle community where Mr.
Williford
was reared on a farm. He attended school in the community there.
He
attended Rusk Academy and finished his school work in Simmons
College, Wichita Falls.
He early determined to become a minister in the Baptist church
with
which he allied himself in his early boyhood. While still in
school he
served as pastor of the 4th Street Baptist church in Wichita
Falls. His
next ministerial work was as Missionary, serving churches in
Anderson
county. He became pastor of the church at Murchison seven years
ago
and has served there continuously since.
He was married September 15th, 1924 to Miss Maggie Jackson, who
is
of a prominent Henderson county family. To this union there has
been
born a daughter, Lois Elizabeth, the little Miss being just two
months of
age at the time this is written.
Besides his work as a minister Rev. Williford finds time to
devote to
commercial pursuits and is engaged in the lumber business at
Murchison and has been uniformly successful as a business man.
He is a Mason. He maintains his Blue Lodge membership at
Brownsboro and is affiliated with the Chapter in Athens. He is
also a
member of the I. O. O. F. For a number of years he has been
president of
the Chamber of Commerce of Murchison and as such he not only
acts,
but fills the place of one of the town's foremost citizens.
Notwithstanding the fact that he is a successful business man,
Rev.
Williford gives his first thought to his religious work and the
fact that he
has had seven years continuous service as pastor is evidence of
his full
success in this line. As a citizen he ranks high, both in his
home town
and in the county. He is of that type referred to as a live wire,
and works
enthusiastically at any undertaking whose cause he espouses. He
is
invariably chosen among the leaders in any enterprise launched
for the
furtherance of money to any move that is worthy of consideration
and
support by the best of our citizenship. He lives his life cleanly
and loves
his life of service to his Maker and to his fellowman.
