JUDGE J. R. BLADES, District CIerk of Henderson County, ATHENS, TEXAS.
The Blades family are of Scotch extraction and for many generations prior to this one lived in Kentucky. The grandfather was named George and died in the Blue Grass State. His son and the father of our subject, Robert by name was born and reared in their home State. He came to Texas in 1847 being 26 years of age, having been born January 19, 1819. He located in San Augustine, where he taught for a period. In 1848 he came to Harrison county, where he married Miss Lizzie Haralson and settled at once in Marion county near Jefferson. He was a farmer and stock raiser. In 1854 he moved to Cass county, where he lived until his death which occurred in January 1899. He died at the age of 80 years. It was in this county that Joseph Robert was born Mar. 31, 1859. He is therefore a native Texan and is proud of it. He was educated in Atlanta, Texas under the tutelage of M V. Looney. So well and favorably known among the educators of his day. Young Blades aspired to the profession of teaching and frequently assisted his principal in his work but in 1883 he launched his own boat upon the professional sea and accepted the position of teacher in the little city of Athens. He taught for several years and then read law and was regularly admitted to the bar. However his preparation for the legal profession had depleted his treasury, he again accepted an offer to teach and taught at Pine Grove for two terms and then returned to his old place as teacher in Athens. After a period passed, Mr. Blades, being versed in the law, was called to fill the position of County Judge, by the people of his county, which he did with satisfaction for the space of 4 years. He then voluntarily retired from office and engaged in farming for sometime. He then engaged in the lumber business, unfortunately however, in this line, the Judge lost all he had accumulated to that time and of course retired from the business. In 1900 he was elected district clerk and was again elected last November and occupies that office now. In 1884 Aug. 5. he married Miss Luella Deupree. who lived 7 years and became the mother of 3 children after her death on Aug. 5, 1891, he married the younger sister of his deceased wife, Miss Ida Deupree, who is the mother of four children. The judge Is quite affable in his demeanor and has many friends in the county. He is a member of the Methodist church a Mason, K. of P. W O. W and Macahee and greatly desires to see the county develop to the uttermost of her possibilities.
