Athens Weekly Review

John H. Towery
Mr. J. H. Towery was born in southwestern Kentucky and reared on
a
farm. His opportunities for an education were not the best in the
world,
as he only attended school two of three months each year. But
after
getting the best schooling he could while growing up, he later
attended
M. & F. Academy at Providence, Ky., for two years, working
his way
through. After finishing his training, he taught in the public
schools of
Kentucky five years and also taught in Missouri two years. Mr.
Towery
came to Texas in 1891 and taught in the public schools of Denton
county three years. In 1900 he moved to Dallas county and engaged
in
the grocery business with T. F. Forrester one year, and then went
with
the Dallas Electric Railway Company as conductor and ran for two
years in and out of Dallas. In 1903 Mr. Towery went with the
Duke, Teal
& Ayres, (now Duke & Ayres) and managed different stores
for them,
and then became connected with Butler Brothers, and for several
years
traveled for this firm as salesman.
In 1912 Mr. Towery came to Athens and engaged in the hardware and
furniture business, and continued in this business until April 1,
1925,
when he sold out and retired.
Mr. Towery has always been a booster for Athens, and at one time
served as president of the Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Towery was united in marriage to Miss Vergie May Gresham of
Princeton, Ky., in 1893, and in 1903 she died, leaving one son,
Forrest
Lee. In 1904 Mr. Towery was again married. His wife was Miss Anna
LaRue of Athens.
In the late war, Mr. Towery furnished a son, Forrest Lee, who
went
overseas as a captain and came back home as a major. While in the
service Major Towery was seriously wounded, but recovered, and
recently was graduated from the Texas State University.
Mr. Towery is a Mason, and a Shriner, being a member of Karem
Temple
of Waco. He is proud of his membership in the Baptist church. He
is
also proud of his record as a Democrat. He never fails to support
the
straight ticket. He is one of the substained and progressive
citizens of
Athens.
