J. B. Wofford
J. B. Wofford, son of B. W. J. was born July 4, 1855, at
Fincastle. He grew up in the community, receiving a good country
school education. He also attended Trinity University of
Tehuacana.
His first venture in life was in the mercantile business. He was
associated with his father at Fincastle as Wofford & Son. He
came to Athens about 1884 and has been engaged in the mercantile
business all the time since. He is also a stock holder and vice
president at the First National Bank of Athens. Mr. Wofford takes
an active part in all public enterprises. When Athens was
incorporated a large number of citizens petitioned hem to serve
as one of the aldermen which he consented to do and was elected.
He has been very successful in all his enterprises, proving his
good, sound business capacity and judgment. Mrs. Wofford was Miss
Rena Rose and before her marriage resided in or near Tyler. They
have two children, a daughter, Miss Julia, who is a bright,
interesting young lady, and a son Bush, named for his
grandfather, who is a bright boy, full of laudable ambition and
will, no doubt, some day, if he lives, be a distinguished man and
will honor the name.
