Athens Weekly Review
Aug. 2, 1901
Mrs. Gerry D. Easterling
Although Mrs. Easterling was out of the state a few years, yet
she well deserves a place in the Old Settlers Edition. Her first
husband and with whom she came to Texas was named Meredith. They
came to Texas in a wagon, being six weeks on the road. They
landed in Athens in September, 1851. Where the public square now
is was a thicket and the court house was a log cabin. After a
residence of eight years her husband died and she returned to
Georgia where she remained until 1885, when she returned to
Athens. In the meantime she had married Judge J. N. Easterling of
Georgia.
She has raised five children, three of her first marriage and two
of the second. All reside in Henderson county except the oldest.
A. W. Meredith, who is a prominent and honored citizen of Wills
Point, Van Zandt county. J. T. Meredith, Mrs. T. M. Graham, Dr.
A. H. Easterling and Mrs. J. A. Murchison all reside in and near
Athens and are well fixed in life and are prosperous. Our county
attorney is a grandson. Mrs. Easterling has a good home in
Athens. Her son Dr. Easterling, one of the prominent physicians
of the county, lives with her.
