Dr. John K. Webster
Dr. J. K. Webster was born at Carthage, N. C., February 6, 1867.
His
parents came to Texas in 1871, when he was but four years of age,
and
was for a short time located in Palestine. The Webster family
soon
removed to Henderson county and it was here in Athens that J. K.
Webster received his early schooling and grew to manhood. He soon
developed a liking for the medical profession, and at an early
age
attended the Louisville Medical College, at Louisville, Ky. When
he
received his medical degree in 1891, he came back home and began
practice fourteen miles west of Athens, in Henderson county.
After several years of successful practice in that vicinity, Dr.
Webster
decided to come back to his home town, and in 1907 he opened an
office in Athens and today he enjoys a fine practice and is a
leader in
many movements to better the town and community.
Dr. Webster was married in 1897 to Miss Mattie (Martha) Smith.
They have reared
two daughters and one son (William S.) Dr. Webster has spent the
greater part of
his life as a physician right here in Athens and is justly
popular.
When the World War made it necessary for Uncle Sam to call for
assistance from the medical profession, Dr. Webster was one to
respond. he enlisted in the Fifteenth Division, 80th Regiment,
and went
into the service as a First Lieutenant, and after several months
in the
service, he was discharged as a Captain.
In 1924 Dr. Webster organized a Hospital Company in the Texas
National Guard and is the commanding officer, with the rank of
Major.
Dr. Webster is an active man and always gives his best efforts in
anything he undertakes. He served Henderson county four years as
county health officer and as city health officer for ten years.
One thing of which Dr. Webster is especially proud is his having
been
selected as special surgeon for the High School Athletic boys. So
popular is the doctor with the boys, that some time ago they
presented
him with a beautiful ring as a token of their esteem and
appreciation of
his services. All treatments are absolutely free to the boys.
Dr. Webster is a Mason and is Past Master of the local lodge and
also of
the lodge at Malakoff. He is also Past Patron of the Eastern
Star, and a
member of the Knights of Pythias. His church membership is with
the
Presbyterian church of Athens. At the age of 19 he was
superintendent
of Sunday School and at the age of 20 was elected an elder of the
church.
