A. F. Wood
The name of A. F. Wood is one well known to residents of
Henderson
county and the City of Athens. On July 11, 1878 Mr. Wood was born
in
Athens, being a native son of Texas and Henderson county. He
attended the grade schools of Athens as a boy and when out of his
high
school, he attended Texas A. & M. College. Coming home from
college
he decided to engage in growing peaches for the market and he was
one of the pioneers in the fruit industry in this county. For
several years
he successfully followed the growing and shipping of fruit. In
1912 he
discontinued his activities in the orchard industry and was for a
time
interested in banking business.
It was A. F. Wood who blazed the trail in the automobile business
in
Athens and Henderson county. he established the Wood Motor
Company in 1915, which he successfully managed for years. This
company is a monument to his energy and business sagacity. he
made
a wonderful success of this company. Two years ago, however, he
relinquished the active management of the company, but is still
an
owner of stock in it.
In 1921 he became distributor for Henderson county of the Texas
Company's products, and he soon found that he had a volume of
business to handle that required his entire attention. He is now
in the
wholesale and retail oil business and it is rapidly growing.
In local affairs Mr. Wood has always taken his part of the work.
He has
been for twelve years a member of the school board of Athens, and
during the late war was a willing and active worker in the
disposition of
Liberty Bonds and Stamps. He is now president of the East Texas
Cotton Palace Association, and an active member of the Athens
Chamber of Commerce. Any matter of public welfare finds him
lending
his aid.
In 1903 Mr. Wood was united in marriage to Miss Annie Ackerman.
They
have tow sons, Gaston and A. F. Jr., 21 and 18 respectively.
Mr. Wood has only been interested in politics to the extent of
conscientiously voting for men of his choice.
He is an active member of the Presbyterian church and has held
the
highest office in the Knights of Pythias Lodge.
