John Joseph Fuller's Dairy

Introduction of diary of John Joseph Fuller

John Joseph Fuller was born November 19,1905 in Athens, Henderson County Texas,
and died August 05, 1980 in Athens Texas. John Fuller was my grandpa.
John was born to Thomas Jefferson Fuller and Martha "Mattie" Boyd.
John Fuller married Sarah "Sallie" Miller daughter of Jim Miller and Mary
"Mollie" Dalton on December 19, 1925 in Athens Texas.
Sallie was born Aug 08,1905 and died April 11, 1973 in Athens.
John and Sallie had four children. Mary John Fuller born March 31, 1930,
Raymond Jack Fuller born May 25, 1936, Sherian Shawnee Fuller born October 9,1939
and Derwin Lawson Fuller born October 9, 1939. Sherian and Derwin were twins.
Sherian was born ten minutes before Derwin. All four children
were born and raised in Athens and Henderson County Texas.
John and Sallie are buried side by side at the Rome Cemetery.
Their son Derwin died Sept 6, 1997 in Houston Texas and is buried in the Rome Cemetery.

Grandpa farmed and trapped most all of his life. He was a good farmer and a good trapper.
When I was a young child I would go on the trap line with him. Grandpa taught me
how to trap, hunt, fish and how to shoot and handle a gun. I have so many wonderful
memories of those days. A lot of days I did not go to school because I wanted to go
on the trap line or to the woods with grandpa. But there were a lot of times that
grandpa told me I was going to school anyway.

John Fuller was in the Texas National Guard. He enlisted in the Howitzer Company,
144th Infantry September 22, 1936. Served three years under Captain Gaston M Wood,
 Athens, Texas.
On October 13, 1939 enlisted in the Anti-Tank Platoon Hg Co 144th Inf Captain Gaston Wood.
This information is wrote in the back of a book published in 1940 for Texas National Guard.

Grandpa had a lot of friends. I do not know of him ever meeting a stranger.

I am going to try to tell you who some of the people are that grandpa talks about in this diary.

He talks about his mother Mattie. After his daddy Thomas died his mother married a man by
the name of Samuel Moody. I have been told that Mr. Moody was a mean old man.
Family members say that Samuel Moody was not related to R. J. Moody that grandpa speaks
of in his diary. Granny Moody and Samuel Moody are both buried in the Rome cemetery.

Alvin Ross was a very long time friend of the family. Grandpa talks about Alvin going
to New York. He was speaking of the New York Community in Henderson County, Texas.

Laura was the sister of Sallie. Laura Miller married Chester Harris. They had three children,
James T "J.T." Harris, Johnny Claude "Doyle" Harris and Nolan Harris.

Johnnie was also the sister of Sallie. Johnnie Miller married Enoch Harris.
They had one child Enoch Nathaniel Harris. After Enoch died Johnnie married
Archie Luther Boyd. Archie was the brother of Mattie.
From my understanding that did not last long. Johnnie had another baby by a man
named Sterling Harris. He was a cousin to Enoch Harris her first husband.
The baby's name was Dalton and he lived only about three months.

Lillian and Taylor Slaton was friends that lived in the community.

D.O. Paris lived in the Bethel community. Grandpa and him were friends.
D.O. also farmed. After the death of grandpa I would still see D.O. and his family.
D.O. started to farm at the Pool farm. That is the same place where I grew up.
D.O. raised watermelons just like grandpa did. After I became a teenager I lived
in Houston but every chance I got I was in Athens. I would always stop by the store
and say hi to D.O. and his wife Alla Bea. D.O. took my nephew Billy to the fields with
him a few times. He also took my niece Katie when she was very small. I always
looked forward to the summer time to get me a good watermelon from D.O. and to have a
friendly conversation. I am proud and honored to say that D. O. was my friend.
And I miss him. D.O. was born Apr 29, 1928 and died Feb 27, 1995 in Athens and is buried
in the Shelby Chapel cemetery. He had cancer. I am so thankful that over the years
I have been able to maintain a close friendship with the Paris family.
To this date I still talk to and still maintain a friendship with the family.
They live in the Bethel Community north of Athens.

Maude Slaton was a family friend that lived in the community. She was
also D. O. Paris grandmother. She raised D. O.

Mr. And Mrs. Youngblood lived in the community. Athlean is their daughter.
Athlean still lives in her parents old house in what is now called New Walton
Community.Over the years I have also maintained a friendship with Athlean and
her children. Athlean and I share the same birthday but many years apart.
At this time (2002) she is not in good health. Mr. and Mrs. Youngblood are buried
in the Zion Hill Cemetery.

Regania was John's sister. She married William Ballard (Buster) Burden.
Regania and Buster are both buried in the Rome Cemetery in Henderson County, Texas.

Opal Terry was a friend. She married U. V. Wallace. They are both buried at
Shelby Chapel Cemetery.

The Slaton's were family friends. Some of the Slaton's are buried in the Liberty
Cemetery in Van Zandt County.
