Gray county is located in the panhandle region of Texas. It was created in 1876 from northern Bexar County but wasn't
organized until 1902. Pampa is the county seat and is located in the northwest quadrant of the county. Gray was named
for Peter W Gray who represented Texas in the Confederate House of Representatives, and briefly served on the Texas
Supreme Court. Pampa was originally called Glasgow and then Sutton before the residents settled on the South American
word for plains.
The Leaning Tower
When visiting the panhandle, don't miss out on the Leaning Tower of Britten in the southwest corner of Gray County on I-40, just before it crosses into Carson County. The tower was orginally a working water tower but was purchased and converted to an advertisement by the Leaning Tower Truck Stop. The truck stop was closed because of a fire in the mid-80s but the tower is still a popular attraction and is sometimes called the Leaning Tower of Texas.- On-Site Information
