NOTES: 1. Alta Sussie Margarite Hawes, b. 26 Mar 1912, was born blind. Her life story is very interesting. 2. John Samuel Lindsey Hawes wrote his life story, which his daughter has. He also wrote a story about their travels starting out in a covered wagon with a team of mares. He wrote this as a child yet in school. I have a copy. 3. Our task now before us is to separate fact from fiction. I was hoping since we list the two previous generations as being born in Freestone, TX some roots might be found at this site. 4. A descendant of James W. Hawes & California Welch became a participant in the Hawes DNA study (for family tree purposes). He matched five other descendants of smauel Hawes of Virginia, most with proven paper family trees. Speculation is James W. Hawes is a descendant of the brother who went north. "The legend is our immigrant Hawes ancestor & his brother came to Colonial America, from England, in the sixteen hundreds; one is said to have gone north and the other one is said to have gone south to Virginia. There are no Bible pages dating back to colonial days and no actual name for this immigrant ancestor; Samuel Hawes (1st) of Virginia is the first known ancestor, for whom there is a name. He is a likely descendant of the brother who went south. The first Samuel Hawes in Virginia married Elizabeth Anne Spencer. They had five children; two sons--eldest son, Isaac Hawes Sr., youngest son, Samuel Hawes II. According to family tree information, they lived in Caroline Co. & Essex Co. Caroline Co. was formed in about 1727 out of parts of three other counties, one of those was Essex Co. taken from e-mail from administrator for the Hawes DNA project. |
