NOTES: John W. Camron did not have any children of his own. He did however raise Vera V. and Thomas L. Lindley, children of Ona and John P. Lindley. Their are listed as son and daughter on the 1900 Census of Freestone Co., TX. Charlie (Charles Lafayette) was killed accidentally in 1908 when a supply wagon ran over him when the horses became spooked. Leaving Sallie to raise 5 children. Robert Thomas "Tom", was called Dan Tucker for 8 years until he was named, which family members thought was horrid. Mattie and Mollie was accidentally poisoned by arsenic and died with weeks of each other. Mattie had went to her sister's (Mollie) to care for her during an illness and made biscuits for them, without knowing the can contained arsenic instead of baking powder. These accounts are family recorded events. Robert Newton Cameron volunteered (the fall after the war commenced) at Avoca, Lawrence Co., AL in the 35th Regiment, company B, Infantry. He was at Vicksburg, Monta Valley, and near New Orleans in battle, also was in the battle at Corinth. Robert Newton was wounded in the Battle of Decatur. All this information was obtained from the Pension Application from Martha Camron. |

Several researchers believe the parents of Robert Newton are William and 2nd wife Francis Nolen/Nolan, conclusive proof is yet to be located. Most records (Marriage, Census, Court transactions-from early 1800's until the 1900's), as well as cemetery inscriptions indicate the family name was spelled CAMRON. Some time during the early 1900's the name changed to CAMERON. |
