Background: A long naval military career beginning in the English naval academy,
George Joseph Lee purchased 131 acres on the Greenbriar creek on March 18, 1867
south of Winkler from James Patterson. He built a log cabin homesite on the
parcel.
Cemetery Description: Small, private, family cemetery in the Winkler area. The
cemetery is on land owned by the Anderson family of Streetman. There is
apparently a second Lee cemetery between Butler and Oakwood in the southern part
of the county.
Directions: From Fairfield, go north on FM-488 to FM-416. Turn left past turnoff
of Harp cemetery. Go past St. Elmo cemetery and New Hope Church. After entering
Winkler city limits, go past stores turning left on a red clay road. Look for a
old log house which is near the cemetery. Note- there is also Hill cemetery next
to another house on this parcel.
