114 East Pecan Street
Coleman, Texas

Legal Description:

As this northeast quarter of Block 8 of the Original Townsite of Coleman was originally one business and what is now 108 East Pecan Street, 110 East Pecan Street, 112 East Pecan Street and 114 East Pecan Street were built as one building, it is difficult, at times, to separate the buildling into separate addresses, as it is now, in 2005.  What is now 110 East Pecan Street is legally known as the east half of lot 12 of Block 8 of the Original Townsite of Coleman.  For an overview of this building see 108 - 114 East Pecan Street.

C. R. Jeanes Grocery and Produce
northeast corner, taken in the late 1920's or early 1930's

This location on the east side of this block of building was addressed as 114 East Pecan by 1928, but the 1929 Coleman City Directory shows C. R. Jeanes Grocery as 108 East Pecan Street.  Note the Central Hotel sign to the right of the picture.  The Central Hotel occupied most, if not all, of the second story over this block of buildings.  I assume the lobby of the hotel was where the sign was, which appears be between 108 East Pecan Street and 110 East Pecan Street.

The original image, shown above was very dark in the shadow areas, as these building faced north.  The image to the left shows detail of above image, with shadows lightened to show the name of store, the man looking in the window, merchandise in front of store, and other details.

"In 1929, Piggly Wiggly (grocery store) was located at 114 East Pecan Street.  W. P. Stobaugh was the proprietor.  They dealt in groceries, meats, dairy products, produce and fruits."  (Coleman City Directory, 1929 - Hudspeth.)  (Note: The second story of 114 East Pecan Street was known as 114 1/2 East Pecan Street.)

McHorse Grocery Is Young Firm; Proving Popular

The McHorse Grocery and Meat Market located at 114 East Pecan is one of the latest additions to the business life of Coleman.  It is one of the younger business institutions of this city but is enjoying a tremendously popular patronage which can only mean one thing:  good management and good merchandise.

Mr. McHorse knows his merchandising and is there to see that the customer gets the benefit of the savings that wise marketing has made possible.  You will find a select line of staple and fancy groceries and fruits and vegetables that are made appealing to you through artistically arranged display.  This store is kept clean, and sanitary at all times which assures you of healthful foods.

In the meat market they handle choice cuts of fresh meats from which you may get the choicest cuts of steaks, chops, roasts, etc.  They also handle cured meats that are the products of popular packing Companies.  Through their cooling facilities their meats are kept at the proper temperature which is the only means of being sure that you are getting good meat.

Mr. McHorse, the proprietor, is a former resident of Coleman.  In the intervening time has, been engaged in business in the West Texas plains country.  His return to Coleman was merely returning home to Mr. McHorse for he has many friends here, some of long standing and many new ones he has made since his return.  His pleasant disposition makes shopping at his store a pleasure.  He welcomes and invites you to come at any time for either, business or a friendly visit.
