Mary D. Williams, 99

ARLINGTON -- Mary D. Williams, 99, a child of God, devoted mother, beloved grandmother, adored aunt and dear friend to many, was escorted by a host of heavenly angels to a long-awaited loving embrace from her dear Lord and Savior on Wednesday, June 4, 2008, surrounded by family and loving friends.  Funeral services were held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Moore Funeral Home.

Mary was born September 25, 1908, to John Williams and Emma Agnes Rice.  She was raised and schooled in the small community of Santa Anna.  As the youngest of four children, she was babied, pampered, teased and tormented by her sister, Virgie, and brothers, Frank and Bill.  Mary married Roland Erl Williams on April 14, 1929.  She was a loving wife and a devoted mother to her children, Cecil and Juanita.  She enjoyed cooking, especially for a whole slew of family, sewing, baking and playing bridge and dominoes.

Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband; her parents; brothers; sister; beloved first born, Cecil; and her much-loved son-in-law, Bill Taylor.

Survivors include her devoted daughter, Juanita Taylor; her much-loved daughter-in-law, Ann Williams.  She was blessed with five grandchildren, Susan, Diane, Shelly, Debbie and Mike; six great-grandchildren, Stephanie, James, Trevor, Wyatt, Ashley and Lauren; seven great-great-grandchildren, Megan, Clint, Tristan, Kane, Jewell, Olivia and Maren; many loving nieces and nephews; and a host of friends extending across the country.

Leonard R. Johnson, 90

Leonard Richard Johnson died June 4, 2008, at his home in Coleman.  Services for Mr. Johnson, long time resident and stock farmer in Coleman and Callahan counties, was Friday at 10 a.m. at Walker Funeral Home in Coleman.  Internment followed in the Oplin Cemetery.  Visitation was Thursday, June 5, 2008 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home.

Mr. Johnson was born April 30, 1918, in Cross Plains, Texas, to Luther Richard Johnson and Leola Gwin Johnson.  Both the Gwin and Johnson families had moved from Alabama to Callahan County in the late 1890's and early 1900's.  Both families eventually settled in the Oplin area.  Mr. Johnson spent his younger years in Clyde and Oplin, where he attended school and met Aleene Swor.  The couple eloped July 26, 1936, in Potosi, Texas, after slipping away after church in a car borrowed from Mr. Johnson’s uncle.  Mrs. Johnson preceded him in death on December 21, 2004.  The couple lived in the Oplin area where Mr. Johnson farmed and worked for other ranchers in the area.  In 1950, they moved to Novice, where they lived until moving to Coleman in 1964.  He was an excellent horseman, breaking and training his own horses to "cut on a dime."  Before his children grew up and left home, he never missed a Coleman rodeo, always riding with them in the parade and grand entry.  He loved the land.  Working 16 hours a day plowing or caring for his cattle was his life.  He might not be able to tell a person much about his own great grandparents but he knew the family histories of every cow he owned, always astounding new friends or distant relatives with a running monologue about his cattle’s genealogy.

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in law, Pat and Bob Gordon of Fort Worth and Pam and Robert Kincaid of Weatherford; two sons, Richard and Ellen Johnson of Novice and Larry Johnson of Oplin, two sisters, Dorothy Harris of Canyon Lake, Texas and Oma Christle of Minneapolis, Minnesota; seven grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by grandson, Cody Johnson, sister Augusta Connell, and two brothers Earl and Leo.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Oplin Cemetery Association or Coleman County Youth Center.
