Coleman Man Killed in Jones County Crash

Emmett Lavell Brown, 27 years of age, of Comal Street in Coleman, was killed in a one vehicle rollover crash occurring Tuesday (January 1) at 1:09 p.m.  The crash was on Farm Road 600, three miles south of Nugent in Jones County.  His body was taken to Abilene Professional Services in Abilene, Texas.

Brown was driving a 2005 Chrysler Seibring north on FM 600.  He failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway, slid off the pavement, striking a drainage culvert causing the vehicle to flip onto its top.  Weather was not a factor in this crash.  Trooper Vernon Davis is the investigating officer.

Emmett Lavell Brown, 27

Emmett Lavell Brown passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2008 at the age of 27 after a fatal car accident.  Service will be held at Truevine Baptist Church at 11:00am Saturday, January 5, 2008.  Reverend James Anderson officiating.  Burial in the Coleman Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, January 4, at Baker-Kirk Mortuary, 810 E. 2nd Street, Coleman.

Emmett Lavell was born on October 9, 1980 in Brownwood to the parents of Doris Jean and Tommy Larkins of Pioneer, Texas.  Emmett Lavell was a graduate of Coleman High and participated in football, basketball and baseball.  He was employed with Central Basin Oil Investments Inc. of Irving.


Emmett Lavell leaves to cherish his memory a devoted family, his parents; two sisters, Charlene and husband Samax Randolph of Anna, Texas and Courtney Larkin of Pioneer, Texas; his fiancé, Angie Finley of Coleman; two daughters, Carmelia Kincaid of Novice and Sierra Brown of Coleman; grandparents, Emmett and Mary Ann Payne of Coleman; great-great grandfather, David Jackson of Coleman; one aunt, Kimala Sampson of Warrick, Rhode Island; cousins, Na'Tayla Payne of Warrick, Rhode Island and Bridgette Padgitt of Austin, Texas; and a host of aunts and uncles and many, many relatives and friends.

Lucille Townsley, 86

Lucille Townsley, 86, passed away Thursday, January 3, 2008.  Her funeral service will be held at the Woodlawn Church of Christ at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 5, 2008, with burial following in Elmwood Memorial Park under the direction of Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 HWY 277 South.

Lucille was born on March 11, 1921, in Valera, Texas, the third daughter of Henry and Stella Dennis and was a 1941 graduate of Coleman High School.  Lucille married V. A. Townsley on May 23, 1941 in Coleman County, Texas.  They left Coleman County around 1942, and took up farming in Merkel until 1946, when they left the farm for a move into Abilene where she became active in the PTA program at the elementary school her children attended, and was a scoutmaster for the Cub Scouts.  She continued to be active in all her children's activities throughout their school years.  She worked in the retail business from 1957 until 1970 when she went to work in a production plant until her retirement in 1985.  After her retirement she participated in volunteer work at a local hospital and helped care for the shut-ins and the elderly of our community.  Lucille was baptized in a creek near Cross Roads, Texas, in her early teens and has been a member of The Woodlawn Church of Christ since 1958, where she taught Sunday School when she was able.  A devout Christian her entire life, she served her Lord faithfully and looked forward to "going home."  We mourn her passing, but celebrate her life.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Rex and Jennifer Townsley of Abilene; three grandchildren, Michelle Shoecraft, Ricky Townsley, and Joe Townsley, all of Fort Worth; and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: one son, Joe Bob Townsley; her husband, V. A. Townsley; and three sisters, Inez Morgan, Emma West, and Gladys Hughes.  In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations to: Christian Service Center 901 Mesquite, Abilene Texas 79601.

Louise Gideon, 95

Louise Gideon, age 95, of Houston, died Friday, January 4, 2008 in a Sugar Land Hospital.  Funeral  services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel.  Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

She was born Mary Louise Martin on March 3, 1912 in Forest Grove, Texas, the daughter of James Abram Garfield Martin and Era Pearl Kerr Martin.  She grew up in Forest Grove and graduated from McKinney High School in 1929.  She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1935 from North Texas State and her Masters of Arts Degree in 1950 from Harding Simmons University. She married James Ollie Gideon on January 20, 1938 in Jacksboro.  He preceded her in death on January 4, 1990.  Mrs. Gideon taught third grade at South Ward School for many years, was a member of the First Christian Church, sang alto in the Choir and was also the substitute organist.  She also volunteered with Meals on  Wheels.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Kyle and Clara Gideon of Cypress; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Gideon of Houston, Jodie Gideon of Cypress and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband and several brothers and sisters.  Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church.

Ruth McKinley, 90

Ruth McKinley, of Coleman, passed away Saturday, January 5, 2008 in Coleman.

Funeral services will be at 2:00pm Monday, January 7, at the Coleman City Cemetery Pavilion with Joe Hailey officiating, under the direction of Walker Funeral Home.

Ruth was born September 9, 1917 and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ollie Beal. She had lived in Coleman County all her life. She was a member of the Coleman Church of Christ and is survived by: daughter - Kay McKinley and grandchildren, Chris and Lacy Culpepper along with several nieces and nephews, including Marlie and Becky Watson of Coleman.

Norma Jean Hill, 79

Norma Jean Hill passed away Saturday, January 5, 2008, in Coleman.  The family will receive friends at Walker Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, January 7.  Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 8, at Lawn Haven Cemetery in San Angelo.  Rev. Kermit Sorrells will officiate under the direction of Walker Funeral Home of Coleman.

Norma Jean was born November 28, 1928 in Eden, Texas, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Henry and Goldie Laman Hill.  She had lived in Coleman since 1995 and was a member of the Baptist church and a great friend.

Survivors include one sister, Margaret Robinson of Kenosha, Wisconsin; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Raymond and Nellie Joe Hill of Santa Anna and Aaron and Gladys Hill of Riverside, California; numerous nieces and nephews; aunts, Dean Truelove of San Angelo and Juanita Cummings of Barstow, California.

James D. Isenhower, 93

John D. Isenhower of Putnam, Texas, passed away Wednesday, January 9, 2008, at his home.  Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 12, 2008, at the First Baptist Church of Baird, Texas.  Interment will follow at Putnam Cemetery.  Services are under the direction of Parker Funeral Home of Baird.   A visitation will be held on Friday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

John D. was born July 30, 1914, in Putnam, Texas to William Martin and Ruth Jones Isenhower.  He graduated from Putnam High School in 1932 and attended Abilene Christian College for two years from 1932 to 1934.  On September 18, 1936, John D. married Roberta Nell Pruet, daughter of Elison and Rubye Gunn Pruet, and to this marriage nine children were born.  He was a rancher and a life long resident of Putnam, living on the home place his father bought in 1879.  He was a member of the Church of Christ.  He served as Mayor of Putnam for several terms.  For many years he coached football for the Putnam Panthers, and was on the Putnam School Board for 30 years.  He also served several terms on the Callahan County Hospital Board.  John D. was one of the founders of The Lower Clear Fork of the Brazos Soil and Water Conservation District, and was on the board for 25 years, where he had served as President.  He was named an Outstanding Farmer of the Year by this organization.  He had been a NOAA weather observer since 1946.  John D. was a member of the Putnam Masonic Lodge #1047, where he was raised to Master Mason on January 12, 1945.  He was District Deputy Grand-Master of the 74th District during 1948-49.  He served as Secretary of the Putnam Lodge from 1953 until it merged with the Baird Lodge #522 in 1979.  He became a dual member of the Cross Plains Lodge #627, and remained consistently active in both lodges over the years.  He conferred innumerable Masonic Degrees, had taught many brothers in the work, held virtually every Masonic certification and distinction, including the Golden Trowel Award in 1991, and had been Worthy Patron of the Cisco Chapter #461, Order of the Easter Star nine times.  John D. was an honorable and noble man who readily contributed to his family, his community, his Lodge, and to humanity.

He was preceded in death by his brothers C. M. Isenhower and Jodie Isenhower, and his sister Dorris Isenhower Freeman.

Survivors include his wife, Roberta Isenhower of the home; five daughters: Mary Helen Green and "Beth" Petty, both of Putnam, Texas, Linda Fiore of Houston, Texas, Gay McClenan of Arlington, Texas, and Elaine Reynolds of Abilene, Texas; four sons: John Doyle Isenhower of Putnam, Texas, James Royce Isenhower of Coleman, Texas, David Isenhower of Sherman, Texas, and Donald Isenhower of Abilene, Texas; 28 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Putnam Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 908, Putnam, Texas, 76469, or to a charity of their choice.

Jimmie Dean Stovall, 83

A Memorial Service for Jimmie Stovall will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 12, 2008 at the Christian Center in Hobbs, New Mexico.  Danny McDaniel and Rev. Jotty McKinney officiated.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to one of the following: Terlingua CISD Scholarship Fund, P. O. Box 256, Terlingua, Texas 79852 NMJC Dorm Scholarship, 5317 Lovington Highway, Hobbs, New Mexico 88240 or BeeHive Homes, 1920 College Lane, Hobbs, New Mexico 88240.  Services were entrusted to May Funeral Home of Hobbs, New Mexico.

Jimmie Dean was born on May 31, 1924 to John Tatum Stovall and Willena Keys Stovall in Coleman, Texas.  She graduated from Centennial High School in Coleman County, Texas and received both a B.S. and M.S. degree from Pan American University and received a M.Ed. from Sul Ross State University.  She married Cam Shields, Jr. of Novice, Texas in February of 1941.  Ms. Stovall taught school in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas and West Texas.  She became the Principal of San Vicente School in Big Bend National Park.  She later served as the Superintendent of the Terlingua School District.  Upon retiring from the Texas education system, she taught at the American School in Puerta Vallarte, Mexico for two years.  After returning to the United States, she served as Dorm Director of Zia Hall at New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, New Mexico.

"Nana" leaves to cherish her memory, one daughter, Sherry Dean Shields of Roanoke, Texas; three grandchildren, Mandy Martin Waldron and her husband William of Hobbs, New Mexico; Melanie Green and her husband Allen of Roanoke, Texas; Danny McDaniel and his wife Diane of Coppell, Texas; ten great-grandchildren, Meagan Wright of Burnet, Texas; Cpl. Brent Green, USMC, Iwakuni, Japan; Danielle Martin Garcia, Matthew Martin; Mallory Martin, Kristina Waldron and William; Waldron, Jr., all of Hobbs, New Mexico; Cam, Gavin and Tate "T. J." McDaniel of Coppell, Texas; five great-great-grandchildren, Emalee and Tristan Wright of Burnet, Texas; Brooklyn and Arianna Garcia of Hobbs, New Mexico; Madyson Martin of Hobbs, New Mexico; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and three sisters.

James Honea, 61

James Honea, of Coleman, died Saturday, January 12, 2008 at Coleman County Medical Center.  Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel.  Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

James Honea was born October 31, 1946 in McKinney, the son of Eddie Honea and Johnnie Langston Honea.  He grew up in McKinney and graduated from McKinney High School and received his Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Grayson County Community College.  He married Brenda Godwin on May 20, 1966 in Princeton.  He worked for the McKinney Police Department for eight years, was a Criminal Investigator for Collin County for six years, worked for Glenbrook Cleaners in Garland for six years and has owned City Cleaners in Coleman for the past 15 years.  He was a member of Coleman Masonic Lodge #496, Santa Council #283, Santa Chapter #346, Valley of Waco Scottish Rite 32nd Degree KCCH, Past Patron Coleman Chapter OES #360, Past Master Coleman Lodge #396, Past Deputy Grand Master and was a member of North Coleman Baptist Church, where he served as Sunday School Director and Music Director.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Honea of Coleman; three daughters and sons-in-law, Shelly and Randy Nunley of Princeton, Wendy and Thomas Lackey of Dodd City, Laurie and Calvin Owens of McKinney; seven grandchildren, Amanda Nunley, Kyle Nunley, Kaci Cumpston, Tyler Lackey, Jacob Owens, Austin Owens, Logan Lackey; three brothers, Don Riddle of Colorado Springs, Colorado, John Riddle of McKinney, Paul Riddle of Jacksonville, Alabama; three sisters, Diane Armstrong of Jacksonville Alabama, Rebecca Varnado of Mesquite, Cindy Riddle of McKinney and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Johnnie Honea Riddle, step-father, Kenneth Riddle and his father, Eddie Honea.

Family visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, January 14, 2008 at Stevens Funeral Home.  Memorials may be made to the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, 2222 Welborn Street, Dallas, Texas 75219.

Pete Floyd, 76

Pete Floyd, of Coleman, died Sunday, January 13, 2008 at Coleman County Medical Center.  Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Joe Hailey officiating, assisted by Edward James.  Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.  Family visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at Stevens Funeral Home.

Pete Floyd was born April 13, 1931 in Coleman, the son of Ben Floyd and Zellar Avery Floyd.  He grew up in Coleman and Brown Counties and attended school in the Buffalo Community.  He served in the Texas State Guard.  He married Wanda Rush on November 25, 1948 in Coleman.  He worked at Martin Brick Plant, Coca Cola Bottling Company, Swift Cottonseed Mill and was a member of Elm Street Church of Christ, where he was a custodian for over 25 years and greeted members and visitors at services.  He also was a member of the Coleman Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years and was named Fireman of the Year, the first year the award was given.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Floyd of Coleman; one daughter, Linda Christian of Coleman; one son, Tommy Floyd of Coleman; two brothers, Kenneth Floyd of Dallas, Gary Floyd of Canton; one sister, Estelle Latimer of Sulphur, Oklahoma; four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was precede in death by two sisters, Edna Jackson and Patsy Blankenship and one grandson, Raymond Bordelon.

Pallbearers will be Ed Smith, Jerry Latimer, Ray Floyd, Harold Bell, William Bell and Eldon McDowell.  Honorary Pallbearers will be Raymond Carnes, Donald Williams, Mason Cullins, Bill Casselberry, Gary Casselberry, Johnny Baugh, Howard Childress, James Dietrich, Gene Christian, Bill Bradshaw, Glenn Lawrence, Mac Anderson, Gary Kerbow, Daniel Dean, Kelly Smith, Jack Needham, Jimmie Driskell, John Holtz and Archie Nettles.
