Doug Elliott, 44

Doug Elliott, of Leander, died Friday June 1, 2007 at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin.  Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at the Coleman City Cemetery Pavilion with Rev. John Stanislaw officiating.  Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Doug Elliott was born September 26, 1962 in Germany, the son of Rose M. Dinardo Elliott and the late Jerry L. Elliott.  He grew up and attended school in El Paso.  He had lived in Leander since 2000 and was the Sales/Operation Manager for Fleet Maintenance Services and was a member of the Harley Davidson Riding Club.

Survivors include his mother, Rose Elliott of Austin; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Judy and Matt Boyer of Austin and Cindy and Warren Donaway; one brother, Jerry Elliott of Longview; nieces and nephews, Leslie, Charlie, Brandon, Kyle, Ashley, and Brooke.

He was preceded in by his father and a daughter, Brandy Elliott.

Charles "Chuck" Turner, 69

Charles "Chuck" Turner, of Coleman, died Saturday, June 2, 2007 at Hendrick Medical Center.  Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 4, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Santiago Udayar officiating, assisted by Deacon Beck Knox.  Burial will be in the Coleman City Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Charles "Chuck" Turner was born February 9, 1938 in Coleman County, the son of Jesse Manuel Turner and Claudie Iris Goree Turner.  He grew up in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School Class of 1957.  He also graduated from Howard-Payne University in 1995.  He served in the National Guard and retired from the United States Post Office after 30 years of service.  He volunteered his time with Meals on Wheels, Loaves and Fishes, Holy Name Society, was Ushering Eucharist Minister and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include two sisters, Lois McCarty and husband, Rodney, of Coleman, Lena Williams of College Station; one brother, Henry Turner and wife, Bonnie, of Abilene; three nieces, Sharon McCarty of Coleman, Kathy Fields of Kingwood, Charlotte Purl of Eustace; one nephew, Sam Williams of College Station; seven great-nieces and great-nephews and numerous step-nieces and step-nephews and special friend, Betty Rolfe, of Coleman.

He was preceded in death by one brother-in-law, Jim Williams.

Family visitation was held from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, June 3, 2007 at the funeral homeMemorials may be sent to Cancer Research, Hospice of the Big Country, Coleman Food Ministries or the donor’s favorite charity.

Father and Son Die in Car Crash

Charley Wayne Boatright Sr., 42, and Charley Wayne Boatright Jr., of Coleman were killed in a head-on collision 4/10 of a mile north of Goldsboro in northern Coleman County at 2:30 a.m. Sunday.  Funeral services for the Boatrights will be graveside at the Coleman Cemetery Pavilion at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Chris Delgado, Coleman County DPS Trooper, reported that the Boatright's were going south in a 1998 Chevrolet Silverado pickup.  A 2006 Dodge Ram pickup, driven by Trey Barton Scott, 26, of Clyde, for an unknown reason, crossed from the northbound lane into the southbound lane and collided head-on with the Boatright pickup.  Scott refused medical treatment at the scene but was later taken by Trooper Delgado to Coleman County Medical Center.  Delgado reported that Scott was subsequently arrested and charged with Intoxication Manslaughter, a 2nd degree felony.  Scott was booked into Coleman County Jail but later released after making bond.

The Boatright's were both pronounced dead at the scene by Nance Campbell, Coleman County Justice of the Peace.  Pat Salas, Coleman County DPS Trooper, is assisting in the investigation.  The DPS was assisted at the scene by the Coleman County Sheriff's Department.

Charley "Chuck" Wayne Boatright, Sr. 42


Charley Wayne "Chuck" Boatright Sr. and his son, Charley Wayne Boatright Jr., both passed away at 2:30 a.m. Sunday, June 3, as a result of an automobile accident near Goldsboro in northern Coleman County.  Family visitation was held at Walker Funeral Home in Coleman from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Monday, June 4.  Funeral services will be held at the Coleman City Cemetery Pavilion at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, with Rev. Louise Strength officiating, under the direction of Walker Funeral Home.  Memorials can be sent to the Brazos Street Mission, 1506 East 9th Street, Coleman, Texas 76834.

Charley Boatright Sr. was born January 1, 1965 in Santa Anna to Carroll Boatright and Charlie Davis Boatright and lived in Coleman County all his life.   He worked as an oil field consultant and was a Baptist.

He is survived by his father, Carroll Boatright; grandmother, Dora D. Boatright; daughter, Kendra; son, Weston Boatright; two sisters, Deanna Boatright and Peggy Deaver, all of Coleman.

Charley Wayne Boatright, Jr. was born January 1, 1991 in Abilene to Charley Wayne Boatright and Penny Boatright.  He was a student at Coleman High School.

Survivors include his mother, Penny Boatright of Coleman; sister, Kendra Boatright; brother, Weston Boatright, both of Coleman; grandmother, Jeanette Keeney of Santa Anna; grandfather and wife, Charles and Karen Croft of Santa Anna; grandfather, Carroll Boatright of Coleman; great-grandmother, Dora D. Boatright of Coleman; 2 aunts, Deanna Boatright and Peggy Deaver, both of Coleman.

Malcolm Wesley Downey, 94

Malcolm Wesley Downey, 94, passed away at his residence in Coleman on June 5, 2007.  Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 7, at Brown Ranch Cemetery with burial to follow under the direction of Walker Funeral Home of Coleman.

He was born September 13, 1912 in Leaday.  He graduated from Gouldbusk High School and farmed before enlisting in the Army in 1942.  He married Zelma Sikes on November 5, 1942 in Coleman.  After serving in the Army during World War II, the couple returned to Coleman to farm and later moved to Port Lavaca, Texas for 10 years.  Returning to settle in Coleman, Malcolm worked for White Auto, Western Auto and ASCS office.  He retired in 1993 to enjoy spending his time raising sheep and maintaining their place.

Survivors include: his wife of 64 1/2 years, Zelma; one son, Kenney Downey and wife Pam of Enumclaw, Washington; three granddaughters, Kelly Downey of Coleman, Kerry Slayton and husband Buddy of Coleman and Kody Downey of Enumclaw, Washington; two great grandsons, Nate Wesley Slayton and Bode Henry Slayton of Coleman; one brother, Sherwood Downey and wife Jean of Coleman; two sisters, Patsy Bartley of Coleman and Doris Dehnel and husband Robert of San Angelo; one sister-in-law, Emma Nell "Sing" Downey of Coleman; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Glyn Downey and one brother-in-law Billy Bartley.

Martha Harwell Autry, 79

Martha Harwell Autry of Coleman, died Thursday, June 7, 2007 at Coleman County Medical Center.  Funeral service was held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 9 in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Chuck Nelson officiating.  Burial followed in the Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

She was born Martha Jean Harwell on November 21, 1927 in Brownwood, Texas, a daughter of Harden Dorbandt Harwell and Cora Mae Casbeer Harwell.  She grew up in Lampasas and San Angelo, graduating from San Angelo High School.  Martha moved to Coleman in 1945.  On April 14, 1946 she married Roy A. Autry, Jr. in Coleman and he preceded her in death on September 13, 2006.  Martha worked in the family newspaper business, The Chronicle and Democrat-Voice, for many years in advertising, sales and as a news writer.  She was a member of the United Christian and Presbyterian Church (UCPC).

She is survived by two daughters, Alana Brudney and husband Stan of Coleman, Tracy Autry of Coleman; one son, Brett Autry and wife Barbara of Coleman; four grandchildren, Brice Brudney and Beau Brudney both of Coleman, Leah Autry of Farmer's Branch, Evan Autry of Austin; four great-grandchildren, Shi Brudney of Coleman, Brianna Brudney of Abilene, Madison Brudney and Blake Brudney both of Coleman; three nephews, Mike, Joe Harden and Jeff Harwell.

She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother, Joe Harwell.

Leland Hale Martin, 78

Leland H. Martin passed away June 8, 2007 at Brownwood Regional Medical Center at the age of 78.  Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Monday, June 11, 2007 at Coggin Avenue Baptist Church with brother Bill Allen and Brother Rick Cavitt officiating.  Interment was in the Brown Ranch Cemetery, Coleman County.  The family requests memorials be sent to the Brown Ranch Cemetery, c/o Lana Dalton, 4619 CR 300, Gouldbusk, Texas 76845.

 was born in Runnels County on January 9, 1929, to Wallace E. and Mattie P. Martin.  As a child he moved to Coleman  County where he grew up in the Brown Ranch Community.  He graduated  from Mozelle High School in 1946.  He married Dorothy Lee Dalton in Coleman on June 15, 1946.  He served many years as a Sunday school teacher, department director and Sunday school superintendent.  He served over 50 years as a ordained deacon at Harmony Baptist Church in Fisk, Melwood Baptist Church and Coggin Avenue Baptist Church in Brownwood where he was currently a member.  Leland was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Dorothy Lee Dalton, and baby daughter, Claudia Darlene Martin.  Also, a sister Stella Moore and brothers, Fred Martin and J. M. Martin.  He lived in south Coleman County where he and his brother-in-law, T. J. Dalton, Jr., operated the Dalton Dairy.  In 1969 he began in the cattle mineral business in Brownwood, moving there in 1974.  He later owned and operated L&M Mineral Company.

In 1992 he married Maxine Oleta Smith in Brownwood where they  made their home and owned a rental business.  With this union he gained more family, including Rick and wife Linda Smith of Austin, Karen Duncan of Arlington and Val and husband, David Fine of Dublin; grandchildren, Lisa Simek of Austin, David and wife Stacy Smith of Austin, Regan Duncan and Drew Duncan of Arlington, Mark and wife, Amanda Fine of Denton and Matt and wife Bobbi Fine of Dalhart; great  grandchildren, Reese and Will Simek, Riley Smith, Sydney Judd, Trinity Fine, and Brice, Brayden, Tadd and Titon Fine; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Rhonda and Gary McConaughey of Spring, Brenda and Randy Yancy of Huntsville, and Marcia Jill and Bill Wells of Brownwood; granddaughters and husbands, Kandra and Jason Foster and Tanna and Matt Lawson, all of Spring; grandsons, Kirk McConaughey of Houston and Calvin and JoAnn Wells of  Stephenville; four great-grandchildren, Payton, Miles, Kamryn and Blayne Foster of Spring; one sister, Winnie Pearl Nelson of Brownwood; four brothers, Herbert Martin of Brownwood, Curtis Martin of Abilene, Billy Joe Martin of Hattiesburg, Mississippi and Roneal Martin of West Palm Beach, Florida; two brothers-in-law, N. T. Dalton of Chaney,  Washington, and Billy Jack Deal of Coleman.

John Paul Pocius, Jr., 64

John Pocius Jr, age 64, of Brownwood, passed away on Friday, June 8, 2007, at his home.  At John's request, there are no services planned.  A register book will be available for friends and family to sign on Tuesday, June 12, at Davis-Morris Funeral Home.  The register book may also be signed online at www.mem.com.

He was born on June 30, 1942, in Houston to John Paul Pocius Sr. and Dora Mae Smith Pocius.  John served his country in the U. S. Navy.  He was a beloved father and friend to all that knew him and he will be missed greatly.

John is survived by a daughter, Joey Ellen Patino of Georgia; three sons, John Paul Pocius III of Georgia, Curtis Alan Pocius of Colorado, and Clayton Kyle Pocius of Corpus Christi; and a sister, Barbara Allen Pocius of Brownwood; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Gerald Lambert Pocius.

Floyd Allen Goodgion, 88

Floyd Allen Goodgion, age 88, passed away Monday, June 11, 2007 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Services will be Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Trickham Union Church with Jack Yates officiating.  Interment will follow at the Trickham Cemetery under the direction of Funeral Home of Santa Anna.

Floyd was born July 23, 1918 in Trickham, Texas to the late Travis Homer and Bessie Rebecca Tarter Goodgion.  He was raised in Trickham where he attended schools and graduated from Santa Anna High School.  On May 9, 1952 Floyd married Gay Moody Outlaw in Clovis, New Mexico and they celebrated 41 years of marriage.  Gay preceded him in death in 1991.  Floyd was a combat veteran of the United States Army serving in World War II with Company G, 110th Infantry Regiment.  He received his BS Degree from Daniel Baker College in Brownwood and his Master Degree from McMurry University in Abilene.  Floyd was a long time grade school principal in Clovis, New Mexico retiring in 1980 and was a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Caroline A. Babbitt of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Kathy and husband Fred Seay of Stewart, Tennessee; three grandchildren,  D. J. and Dallon Babbitt of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Andrea Seay of Louisville, Texas; two sisters, Ruby and husband Jack Yates of Abilene, Texas, Violetta Plaskett and sons Greg and Bruce of California; and many more lone star state nieces and nephews.

Floyd was preceded in death by one brother, Hayden Goodgion, and two sisters, Reba Jongema and Doris Shaw.

Marcel "Marc" Coleman, 86

Marc Coleman passed away on Monday evening, June 11, 2007 in a Brownwood nursing facility.  Funeral services for Troy Marcel "Marc" Coleman, age 86, of Brownwood, will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, June 14, 2007 in the Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Gary Torian officiating.  Interment will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.

He was born in Coleman to Fred and Minnie Craig Coleman.  He graduated from Coleman High School in 1939.  Marc served his country in World War II as a sergeant in the Marine Corps.  He served in the South Pacific including Guadalcanal, Tarawa, and Saipan before being honorably discharged.  He married Aleta Chambers on November 16, 1946 in Coleman.  Marc's working years were spent in the car business, most of those at Broncho Chevrolet in Odessa.  In 1966, Marc moved his family to Brownwood, where he worked in the car business, worked at the Exxon bulk station, and ranched.  He was longtime member of Central United Methodist Church.

Marc is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Aleta Coleman of Brownwood, two daughters, Gail Doerschuk and husband Paul of Brownwood and Jodell Galloway and husband Robert of Lumberton; six grandchildren, Merisha Parvis of Brownwood, Marie Grace and husband Les of Brownwood, Marc Galloway and wife Molly of Humble, Megan Galloway of College Station, Lori Reed and husband Jeff of Brownwood, and Lisa Beyerink and husband Brett of Dedham, Iowa, eight great-grandchildren, four brothers, George, Donald, and Bobby Coleman, all of Farmington, New Mexico and Jackie Coleman of Mineral Wells, three sisters, Peggy Heflebower of Midwest City, Oklahoma, Becky Elkin of Irving, Nancy Coleman of Southlake, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Katie Pearl Coleman and Sue Love, and two brothers, Vernon Coleman and Gene Coleman.

Marilyn Cornett McCutcheon, 48

Funeral services for Marilyn Cornett McCutcheon, age 48, of San Angelo, formerly of Rising Star, were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 13th in the Chapel of Heartland Funeral Home of Early.  Interment followed in Bangs Cemetery under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home of Early.  Mrs. McCutcheon passed away on Monday, June 11, 2007 in San Angelo.

Marilyn Cornett was born on April 7, 1959 in Santa Anna, a daughter of Floyd E. Cornett and Mabel I. Griffin Cornett.  She was reared and attended schools in Brownwood and Rising Star and graduated from Rising Star High School.  On April 7, 1990 she married Donald McCutcheon of San Angelo.  Marilyn had worked at the Light House for the Blind in San Angelo for the last 20 years.  She had lived in San Angelo since 1986, moving there from Rising Star.

She is survived by her husband, Donald McCutcheon of San Angelo; one sister, Laura Yager of Belton; five brothers, Donald Cornett and wife Carleen of Lake Brownwood, Larry Cornett of Gorman, Freddie Cornett and wife Linda of Blanket, Douglas Cornett of Blanket and David Cornett and wife Jennifer of The Colony.  She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, one aunt, and a host of cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Mabel Cornett; one sister, Neva Ann Brown; and three brothers, Vernon Lee Cornett, Wallace Cornett and Edwin Cornett.

Foster "Fuzzy" Mitchell Bowers, 71

Foster "Fuzzy" Mitchell Bowers died Tuesday, June 12, 2007.  Funeral Services were held at Labby Memorial Funeral Home in Leesville, Louisiana on Thursday, June 14, 2007.

"Fuzzy" was born February 16, 1936, in Coleman, Texas.  He lived in Sabine Parish for thirty years and contributed greatly to society there and was loved throughout the community.

He was preceded in death by his son, Alvin Steve Bowers, brothers, John Henry Bowers, Floyd Franklin Bowers, sister, Mary Massey, and brother-in- laws, George Crain and Maynard Speers.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Dorthy "Dean" Bowers, son, Foster "Mitch" Bowers, daughters, Jennifer Bowers and Susan Hyatt, son-in-law, Michael Hyatt, sisters, Marjorie Crain, Geraldine Mitchell, Patricia Smith, Claudia Speers, brothers-in-law, Osie Mitchell, Lonnie Smith, grandchildren, Amanda Mitchell and husband Chris, Lillyan Hyatt, Emily Hyatt, and Alayna Hyatt along with numerous nieces and nephews.

William Earl Irick, 83

William Earl Irick, age 83 of Early died Wednesday evening, June 13, 2007 at the Brownwood Regional Medical Center.  Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 16, 2007 in the Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with burial following  in the Santa Anna Cemetery with military honors.

He was born March 14, 1924 in Coleman County, the son of the late William Earl Irick, Sr. and Mary Lillian Whetstone Irick.  He attended schools in Santa Anna and later served in the U.S. Army during World War II.  He was a decorated veteran receiving a purple heart and was especially proud of his rifleman commendation.  He served at the Battle of the Bulge and in Normandy and was currently a member of the Disabled American Veterans.  He was one of the true real cowboys and will be remembered always wearing his Levis and boots everywhere.  He used to  love to break mustangs.  He later moved to Brown County where he farmed and ranched.  He also worked in the oilfields for Haliburton and was a lineman for Coleman County Telephone Coop.  In his later years, he worked as a mechanic for Sewalt Butane Company.  He was very interested in kids and helped to organize the first Early baseball team.  He will be missed by the many lived he  touched.  He was married to Mary Ruth Lamb in Santa Anna on February 1, 1946.  He was a Baptist.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ruth Irick of Early; a daughter, Beth Joyner of Early; three grandchildren, Vance Gregory  Joyner, Amy Lynne Joyner and Lori Leigh Joyner all of Early; two great-grandchildren, David Lynn Joyner and Kristy Nichole Joyner both of Early; two sisters, Ruth Laverne Clark of Naples, Florida and Mary Frances Williams of Brownwood.  He is also survived by two nephews, Frank Williams and Donald Harlow.

He was preceded in death by a brother, John Franklin Irick.

Earl Ward, 89

Earl Ward, of Coleman, died Thursday, June 14, 2007, at Coleman County Medical Center.  A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 23, at Walker Funeral Home.  Dr. Jeff Miller will officiate.

He was born June 5, 1918 in Lawton, Oklahoma to the late Earl Ward Sr. and Henryetta Ward.  He served as a U.S. Marine during World War II and retired from the propane gas business.

Olivia Flores Batla, 68

Olivia Flores Batla, 68, of San Angelo went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 14, 2007, in Eldorado.  Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Monday, June 18, at Johnson’s Funeral Home chapel.  Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, at the Cathedral Church of The Sacred Heart with the Rev. Maurice Voity as celebrant.  Entombment will follow in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum.  Pallbearers for the service will be Weston Batla, Dwain Batla, Jimmy Batla, Richard Flores, Eliseo Flores and Daniel Batla.

Olivia was born Dec. 15, 1938, in Fort Stockton, Texas, to Francisco and Rumalda Montes Flores.  She graduated from Central High School and also graduated from Angelo State University Nursing School.  She married Laddie J. Batla on June 22, 1968, in San Angelo and together they shared 39 beautiful years of marriage.  Olivia dedicated her life to her family, friends and patients.  She worked at the Schleicher County Medical Center for the last 15 years, but most of all she was a kind and loving wife, mother and grandmother, who was very devoted to her family, and we will dearly miss her.

Olivia was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Julie Michelle Quiroz; and two sisters, Octavia Sedeño and Ernestina Sedeño, and one brother, Isaac Flores.

She is survived by her loving family: husband Laddie J. Batla of San Angelo; her children, Brenda Batla of San Angelo, Cheryl Cathleen Batla of Sunrise, Florida, Weston Batla and his wife, Danita, of Garland, Texas, Dwain Batla and his wife, Darlene, of Wingate, Texas, and Jimmy Batla of San Angelo; 13 grandchildren, Brandi and Jordan Batla of Garland, Austique Moore, Jenna Moore, Jenise Moore, Jonathan Moore, Kori Taylor, Ejay Weaver and Cherise Batla, all of Sunrise, Florida, Nathaniel Batla of Wingate, Daniel Batla of San Angelo, Krystle Quiroz, Julie Dawn Quiroz and Michael A. Quiroz, all of San Angelo; her brothers, Daniel Flores, Eliseo Flores, Rosendo Flores, Bill Flores, Frank Flores and Richard Flores, all of San Angelo; and one sister, Mary Flores of San Angelo; numerous nieces and nephews; and other dear family members and friends.

Marilyn Darnell Johnson, 44, of Talpa and former resident of Cedar Creek, died Saturday, June 16, 2007 at her residence.  Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 23, 2007 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Tommy Tomlinson officiating, assisted by Rev. Ferris Akins and Rev. Mike Schwartz.  The body will be cremated.  Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman, Texas.

Marilyn Darnell Johnson was born April 3, 1963 in Goldsboro, North Carolina, the daughter of Carl H. Darnell and Brenda Wallis Darnell.  She grew up in Abilene and graduated from Abilene High School.  She received her Bachelors degree from Stephen F. Austin University and her Masters degree from the University of South Carolina.  She married Tony Johnson on February 21, 1990 in Charleston, West Virginia.  She was employed with the West Virginia Library Commission for 15 years and the Texas State Library and Archives Commission since 2001.  She moved to Talpa in 2001 and was a member of the Texas Library Association and Wildwood Baptist Church in Cedar Creek.

Survivors include her husband, Tony Johnson of Talpa; her parents, Carl and Brenda Darnell of Talpa; two step-sons, James Jerry Johnson and Tony Ross Johnson, Jr., both of West Virginia; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Karla and Vinson Higginbotham of Talpa, Cynthia and Tommy Thomason of Abilene; her maternal grandparents, Calvin and Louise Bynum of Abilene and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Samuel and Virginal Darnell.  Family visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Stevens Funeral Home.  Memorials may be made to Cancer Treatment Centers of America, Assistance in Healthcare, 2520 Elisa Avenue, Zion, Illinois 60099, Hospice of the Big Country, 4601 Hartford, Abilene, Texas 79605 or the donor's favorite charity.

Sherri Lynn McKee Taliaferro,  51

Sherri Lynn McKee Taliaferro of Mineral Wells, formerly of Coleman and Sonora, died Wednesday, June 19, 2007, in a Mineral Wells hospital.  Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 22, in the chapel of Kerbow Funeral Home.  Burial followed in Sonora Cemetery.

She was born December 13, 1955, in Sonora, to Herb and Betty Sue Allen McKee.  She married Rex Taliaferro on January 11, 1975, in Coleman.

She is survived by her husband, Rex, of Mineral Wells; her children, Rocky Taliaferro and wife Janis of Mineral Wells, and Mica Blevins of Mineral Wells; her parents, Herb and Betty Sue McKee of Coleman; her brothers, Rick McKee and Randy McKee, both of Coleman, and Stacy McKee of Irving; and her grandchildren, Tristen Taliaferro, Ravann Thomasson, Zachary Blevins and Charlie Taliaferro.

Ruby Davis Buford, 81

Ruby Davis Buford, of Coleman, died Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at Coleman County Medical Center.  Graveside services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 24, 2007 at the Burkett Cemetery Pavilion with Rev. Daniel Stovall officiating.  Services were under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Ruby Davis Buford was born February 23, 1926 in Comanche County, the daughter of James Franklin Davis and Myrtle McMillian Davis.  She grew up in Burkett and attended school there.  She married William Aubrey Buford in 1954 in Lovington, New Mexico.  He preceded her in death in 1996.  She worked at the Congress Cafe and Santa Anna Steak House as a waitress and cook and also did home health work.  She was a member of Concho Baptist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Lora Bishop of Coleman, Reba Nell Turner of California, Vonda Ruth Beal of Brownwood; four sons, Earl Eugene Meroney of Coleman, Charles McKenzie of Cross Plains, Larry Wiloth of Corsicana, William Buford, Jr. of Coleman; two sisters, Mae Seaton of Arlington, Ruth Sullens of Weatherford, 23 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, Billie Jean McKenzie and four brothers, James Davis, Arthur Davis, Charles Davis and Earl Davis.

Freddie Blount, 87

Freddie Blount of Odessa passed away Friday June 20, 2007 at his residence.  Services will be Monday at 2:00 p.m. at Henderson Funeral Chapel.  Interment will follow at the Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Henderson Funeral Home of Coleman.   The family received friends Sunday from 5 until 7 p.m. at Henderson Funeral Home in Coleman.

Freddie was born April 22, 1920 in Haskell County, Texas to the late Frederick Quincy and Maggie Nellie Buffington Blount.  He was raised in Haskell County where he attended the Weinert Schools.  On December 20, 1940 Freddie married Maudine Green in Brownfield, Texas and they have celebrated sixty six years of marriage.  Freddie was a residence of Santa Anna from 1956 until 1975 then moving to Plains and in 1986 he moved to Rising Star.  He and Maudine ran the Rising Star acoustical musical and he was citizen of the year for Rising Star.  In 2004 they moved to Odessa where they have since resided.  Freddie was a member of the Church of Christ and retired stock-farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Maudine Blount of Odessa, Texas; 3 Daughters: Lafaunda Buford of Odessa, Texas, Wanelda Morton of Cisco, Texas, Anneda Merchant of Arlington, Texas; a son, Freddie Mack Blount of Bangs, Texas; brother, Ted Williams, Sr. of Sundown, Texas; several nieces and nephews; 10 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren.

Freddie was preceded in death by 1 sister and 4 brothers.

Faye Elizabeth Mobley, 90

Mrs. Faye Elizabeth Mobley of Santa Anna passed away Thursday, June 21, 2007 in the Coleman Medical Center.  Funeral services were held Saturday, June 23, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the Santa Anna Cemetery Pavilion with Rev. Kermit Sorrells officiating.  Services are under the direction of Walker Funeral Home.

Faye Elizabeth Mobley was born May 30, 1917 to the late Mr. and Mrs. E. M. and Georgia Routh.  She married Jack Mobley on September 23, 1937, in Coleman.  He prededed her in death in 1969.  She was also preceded in death by a daughter and a sister.

Ina Grace "Joni" Schultz, 79

Ina Grace 'Joni' Schultz, 79, a resident of Cleveland, Tennessee passed away Thursday, June 21, 2007 at her home.  Funeral services were conducted at 5:00 p.m. Sunday, June 24, 2007 at Broad Street United Methodist Church with the Reverend Andy Ferguson and the Reverend Debbie Stokes officiating.  Interment followed on Monday at 10:00 a.m. in Chattanooga National Cemetery with the procession leaving at 9:00 a.m. from the Ralph Buckner Funeral Home.  David Norton, Dan Norton, Danny Marr, Aaron Marr, Adam Marr, Stephen Duncan, Ricky Duncan and Gary Lynn Wood will be serving as pallbearers.  A white dove release ceremony concluded the service.

Mrs. Schultz was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church.  A former resident of Rockwood, Texas, she graduated from Santa Anna High School, Santa Anna, Texas and McMurray College in Abilene, where she met and married William 'Bill' Schultz.  The couple returned to Cleveland and entered careers in education.  She was a well known educator in the Cleveland area retiring after 34 years of teaching; and a member of the education sorority Delta Kappa Gamma.  She was preceded in death on June 8, 2007 by her husband of 60 years, William 'Bill' Schultz; parents, Bob and Maggie Cheatham Johnson; brothers: R. E. Johnson, H. E. 'Jack' Johnson, L. E. 'Cap' Johnson and T. R. 'Tomboy' Johnson; sisters: Ada Belle Johnson Taylor, Ruby Johnson Russell, Charlotte Johnson Jackman, Ida Cozart and Polly Straughn.

She is survived by her son, Robert J. Schultz; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer Schultz Taylor and Robert L. Taylor all of Cleveland; grandchildren: Jonathan Schultz and wife, Holly, Amelia Schultz Brock and husband, Michael all of Cleveland and Mary Elizabeth Taylor of Nashville; great grandchildren: Elliot Caroline Brock, Addison Elise Brock and Madeline Blythe Schultz all of Cleveland; sisters: Alpha Mae Moss of Cleveland and Bert Wood of Hamilton, Texas and Emily Maness of Brownwood, Texas; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ruth Lynette "Lynn" Stephenson, 51

Ruth Lynette "Lynn" Stephenson, 51, of Gouldbusk, died Friday, June 22, 2007 at Brownwood Regional Medical Center.  Funeral services were 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 25, 2007 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel.  Burial followed in the Gouldbusk Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Lynn was born January 18, 1956 in Santa Anna, the daughter of Charlie Avants and Kathleen Hibbetts Avants.  She grew up in Gouldbusk and graduated from Mozelle High School in 1974.  She married Mike Stephenson on January 2, 1976 in Gouldbusk.  She worked as postmistress for the Rockwood Post Office and later for the Gouldbusk Post Office.  She was active in every type of community event, as well as 4-H and FFA and was also a member of the Gouldbusk United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Mike Stephenson of Gouldbusk; two daughters, Holly Michelle Stephenson of Stephenville, Chancy Lynette Pickett and husband, Daniel Tye, of Coleman; one son, Ethan Jake Stephenson of Gouldbusk; her parents, Charlie and Kathleen Avants of Gouldbusk; two brothers, Marty Avants and wife, Janie, of Cross Plains, David Avants and wife, Tonya, of Gouldbusk; one sister, Sabrina Tibbetts of Coleman; one granddaughter, Callie Lynn Pickett of Coleman; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Lonnie and Tooter Stephenson of Brownwood; two brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jerry Don and Angelita Stephenson of Talpa, Dr. Billy Don and Debra Jones of Brownwood and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Bruce and Ruth Hibbetts and Thomas and Mary Avants.

Juanita V. McCain, 89

Juanita V. McCain, of Midland, passed away on Saturday, June 23, 2007 at Trinity Haven Nursing Home in Midland.  She was cremated.  Services will be held at a later date at Atoka Cemetery in Novice, Texas.  Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home and Crematory in Midland. She was born on October 25, 1917 in Throckmorton, Texas to William Edgar McCain and Della Parker McCain.  She was raised in Throckmorton, lived in Coleman, and moved to Midland in 1951.  She worked for Woolworth's in Midland as a sales clerk for 40 years.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Midland.  She was preceded in death by her parents; twin sister, Loreta McCain, and sister, Willie McCain Shields.

She is survived by her 2 nephews: Bill Shields and wife Sue of Novice and Loren Shields and wife Peggy of Tuscola; and cousin: Jeanne Nosker of Midland.

Frances E. Brown, of San Angelo, Texas, died Sunday morning, June 24, 2007, at her home in San Angelo.  Graveside services are at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 28, at the Oak Cliff Cemetery in Dallas under the direction of Heritage Family Funeral Home in Ballinger.

She is survived by one brother, Elwood Brown and wife Becky of Ballinger, two nieces, Linda Duggan and her husband, Dale of Ballinger, Susan Mansell and her husband Chauncey of Ballinger, and her nephew Roy Brown of Glencoe, New Mexico.  She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, and a nephew.

Bernice J. Dixon, 90

Bernice Dixon, of Coleman, died Monday, June 25, 2007 at Holiday Hill Nursing Home.  Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 28, at Coleman City Cemetery Pavilion with Dr. Don Northway officiating.  Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

She was born Bernice Juanita Culpepper on December 26, 1916 in Bonham County, Texas, a daughter of Henry Buford Culpepper and Emily Anne Ferguson Culpepper.  She grew up in Anson and attended school there.  In 1961 she married Dewey Dixon and he preceded her in death.  She lived in Sheridan, Texas for a number of years before moving to Coleman in 1987.  She was a seamstress at a sewing factory and a Baptist.

Survivors include one son, Rick Turner and wife Karen of Coleman; three grandsons, Ronnie Burfield of Fort Worth, Randy Burfield and wife Lonna of Kennedale and Dale Wayne Little of Houston; two step-grandchildren, Charles Watson and wife Cindy of Coleman, Cathey Cook and husband John of Robeline, Louisiana; two great-grandchildren; one son-in-law, Webb M. Cunningham of Shreveport, Louisiana.

She was preceded in death by six brothers, two sisters, and two daughters, Billie Burfield in 2005 and Ann Cunningham in 2006.

Gary Scott Cole, 60

Gary Scott Cole of San Angelo, passed away on Tuesday, June 26, 2007 in San Angelo.  There will be a celebration of his life on Saturday, July 7 at 4:00 p.m. at 2900 FM 18, Baird, Texas 79504.  For more information please call 325-854-1464.  Arrangements were made by Stevens Funeral Home, Coleman, Texas.

Gary Scott Cole was born November 1, 1946 in Coleman, Texas, the son of William Scott Cole and Daisy Lorain Barnett Cole.  He grew up in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School in 1965.  He was a graduate of the University of Texas.  In 1987 he married Elisabeth Gruen in Koblenz, Germany.  He had lived in San Angelo since 2004.  He was retired from AAFES (Army and Air Force Exchange Service).  He was an avid cyclist and a member of the Concho Valley Randonneurs.  He was a Mason.

Survivors include his wife, Elisabeth Cole of San Angelo; one son, William Peter Cole of San Angelo; his mother, Lorain Cole of Coleman; one sister, Pat Balch of Baird; an aunt, Billie Gregg of Santa Anna; cousins and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his father W. S. Cole on January 13, 2003.

Glenda Gail Pope Anderson, 65

Glenda Anderson died Wednesday, June 27, 2007 at Odessa Regional Medical Center.  Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 1, in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Sam Wilson officiating.  Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

She was born Glenda Gail Pope on December 29, 1941 in Coleman, Texas, a daughter of R. H. Pope and Bobbie Lee Bassett Pope.  She grew up in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School in 1960.  She attended beauty school and LVN school and graduated as a registered nurse from the Methodist School of Nursing in Lubbock.  On December 17, 1961 she married Ronald Thurman (Andy) Anderson in Coleman and he preceded her in death on February 12, 1992.  Gail lived in Snyder for many years and moved to Colorado City following the death of her husband.  She retired from the Mitchell County Hospital District and had recently moved to Odessa. She attended Westbrook Church of Christ.

Survivors include one son, Monty Jack Anderson and wife DeeAnn of Red Oak; one daughter, Robin Gail McCullough and husband James of Odessa; one brother, Kenneth Pope and wife Linda of Gouldbusk; two sisters, Donna Franke and husband Larry of New Braunfels, Helen Overturff and husband Butch of Odessa; two granddaughters, Lynsey McCullough and Sydney McCullough both of Odessa.

She was preceded in death by her father, R. H. Pope, her mother, Bobbie Lee Pope Gardner, a brother, Robert Dale Pope, and a sister, Gloria June Gordon.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Rheumatoid Arthritis Foundation.

Oma Jane Harlan, of Amarillo, died Friday, June 29, 2007.  Services were at 10:00 a.m. Monday at First  Baptist Church Chapel with Robbie Barrett, Education Minister officiating.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Mrs. Harlan was born on September 8, 1942 in Beaumont, Texas to Roland and Rubimae Torrance.  She had  been the receptionist at Nunn Electric for over 25 years.  She was a member of the Sanctuary and Heritage Choirs at First Baptist Church.  She married Kenneth Harlan on August 6, 1964 in Atlanta, Georgia.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Harlan of the home; son, Bart Harlan of Haltom City, Texas;  daughter, Sandra Rose and husband Joe of Coleman; her mother, Rubimae Torrance of Fort Worth; two sisters, Susan Torrance of Austin and Lyn Kiel of Merritt Island, Florida; and two grandchildren, Hannah Rose and Natalee Rose, both of Coleman.

The family suggests memorials to Harrington Cancer Center, 1500 Wallace Blvd, Amarillo, Texas 79105 or a  favorite charity.

Ira Hugh Rains, 72

Wichita Falls, Texas - Ira Hugh Rains went to his heavenly home Saturday, June 30, 2007.  Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 5, 2007, at the Owens and Brumley Chapel with the Rev. Howard Chapman officiating.  A private family committal service will follow. Arrangements entrusted to Owens and Brumley of Wichita Falls.

Hugh was born October 4, 1934, in Dardenelle, Arkansas, to the late Wesley and Susie Rains.  He grew up in Coleman, Texas, and then worked for the Armco/National Oilfield Supply for 15 years.  He was president of I.H.R. he formed in 1969 with security operations in Oklahoma City, Wichita Falls and Kerrville, Texas.

He is survived by a son, Larry Hugh Rains and his wife, Pam of Springdale, Arkansas; two grandchildren, Chase and Lance Rains of Springdale, Arkansas; one brother, Joe Rains of Allen, Texas; two sisters, Dorothy Berryman of Kerrville, Texas and Betty Snyder of San Antonio, Texas; his long time partner, Miss Glenda; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends including local residents Bobbie Jones, Charlotte Fenton, and Sarah Tisdale.

Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to Hospice or a charity of your choice.
