Greta Flippen Ellis, 94

Greta Flippen Ellis passed away on Friday, September 2, 2005.  Services were 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 6th at Restland Wildwood Chapel in Dallas.  Interment followed in Restland Memorial Park.

She was born March 12, 1911 in Albany, Texas and grew up in Coleman, Texas.  Greta was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Dallas and formerly a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church.  She was the longtime widow of prominent builder, Earl E. Ellis and a resident of Dallas for most of her life.

She is survived by sons, Charles Robert Sledge, Earl E. Ellis, II and David F. Ellis; grandchildren, Tracy Gotcher, Rebecca Johnson, Colin Sledge, Suni Elizabeth Ellis, Evan Ellis and Austin Ellis.

Geneva Rose Griffin Hallonquist, 70

Geneva Rose Griffin Hallonquist, age 70, passed away Friday, September 2, 2005.  A memorial service will be held at Walker Funeral Home on Saturday, October 1, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. (access from side parking lot due to downtown activities).  Burial will be at the Bangs Cemetery.

She was born September 16, 1934 in Santa Anna, Texas to L. B. (Leslie) and Irene Lockhart Griffin.  She attended Talpa and Brown Ranch elementary schools and Mozelle High School.  She graduated from Mozelle High School in 1953.  She also attended Draughon¹s Business College in Abilene, Texas.  She was a member of the Methodist Church.  She married Jack B. Hallonquist on May 17, 1959 in Farmington, New Mexico.  Geneva is survived by her husband, Jack, of their home in Montgomery, Texas; two sons, Leslie Allen and Suzan Hallonquist of Pasadena, Texas and Robert Lee and Melania Hallonquist of Montgomery, Texas; one stepson, Jack B. (Scooter) and Rose Hallonquist of Houston, Texas; five grandsons, Allen, James, Michael, Bryan and Zane; one granddaughter, Darcy; and five great-grandchildren.  She is survived locally by one brother, Leon Wayne and Billie Griffin of Fisk, Texas; one niece, Marcy and Amon Otts of Fisk; one nephew, Bryan and Kristi Griffin of Coleman; one cousin, Linda Lawrence of Coleman and two uncles, Floyd Broyles of Coleman and T. A. (Alvis) Griffin of Bangs.

She was preceded in death by her parents.  Instead of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Light House Hospice, 200 River Pointt, Suite 300, Conroe, Texas 77304.

John W. (Dub) Turner, Jr., 87

BRECKENRIDGE:  John W. (Dub) Turner, Jr., age 87, died Saturday, September 3, 2005 at Hendrick Health Systems surrounded by his wife Janice, his children and spouses and some of his grandchildren.  Graveside services will be held today (Tuesday) at 3 p.m. at the Coleman Cemetery, under the direction of Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home, Breckenridge.

Dub was born in Leon County, Texas on January 17, 1918, to John W. Turner and Pearl Burleson Turner.  He grew up there and in Callahan County and married Janice Vaughn in Coleman, Texas on June 3, 1937.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in WW II.  He worked in the oil field for many years and owned and operated oil field trucking businesses in Coleman, later in Abilene and after 1968, in Breckenridge, when he and Janice moved to their home on Hubbard Creek Lake.  He was a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Scottish Rite Shrine.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Janice; one son, John W. Turner III and wife Marsha of Gorman; daughter, Ann and husband, Clyde Berkley of Abilene; daughter Freddie and husband Jim Holybee of Fort Worth; daughter, Linda and husband, Gary Skaggs of Norman, Oklahoma; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Charlcie Steuble and daughters, Mackenzie and Morgan of Washington, D.C., Delilah Herring and son Brett of Fort Worth, Greg Runnels and children, Zoe and Greg of Austin, Laura O¹Loughlin and son Brendan of E. Africa, Holly Fletcher of Washington, D.C., Christy Turner and daughter, Julia of Pico Rivera, California and Jack Runnels Holybee of Fort Worth.

Juanita Fenton Jones, 75

Juanita Fenton Jones, age 75, of Coleman, died Monday, September 5, 2005 at her residence.  Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 7, 2005 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel.  Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

She was born Mary Juanita Fenton on December 22, 1929 in the Centennial community, the daughter of Hiram Frank Fenton, Sr. and Mattie Thompson Fenton.  She grew up and attended school at Centennial.  She married Lavell Jones on January 23, 1948 in Coleman.  For 20 years, she and her husband operated the Texas Ranger Motel in Santa Anna.

Survivors include her husband, Lavell Jones of Coleman; one daughter, Brenda Pate and husband Larry of Murphy, Texas; one sister, Agnes Armstrong of Booker, Texas; one brother, Rex Fenton and wife JoAnn of Ozona; one granddaughter, Pepsi Hawkins and husband Russell of Frisco; one great-grandchild, Dax Allan Hawkins of Frisco; son-in-law, Paul Schmidt of Allen, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Debra Schmidt; one sister, Pauline Smith and two brothers, H.F. Fenton, Jr. and Gene Fenton.  Family visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.  Pallbearers will be Burton Brendle, Shane Fenton, Billy Tom Turland, Jimmy Dan Prestridge, Billy Fields, Justin Castro, Jeremy Castro, Johnny Prestridge and Paul Schmidt.

Michael Scott Huntley, 32

Michael Scott Huntley, age 32, of Coleman, Texas passed away Monday, September 6, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. at his residence in Coleman.  Memorial services will be announced at a later date.

Michael was born July 16, 1973 in Concord, North Carolina to Mark and Rose Ann Darrah Froman.  He attended schools in Bolder City, Nevada and married Angela Lopez in 1992 in Port Aransas, Texas.  Michael was a resident of Port Aransas for most of his life living in Coleman since August 2005.  He was a horticulturalist working in landscaping.

Survivors include a daughter, Destiny Huntley of Kerrville, Texas; a son, Mathew Huntley of Kerrville, Texas; father and mother, Mark and Rose Froman of Aransas Pass, Texas; two sisters, Lisa Padgett of Coleman, Texas and Jenifer Miller of Florida; three brothers, Kenny Huntley of Florida, John Ice of Florida, Joey Ice of Wisconsin; many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Isabel "Cliff" Clifton Baucom, 82

Isabel "Cliff" Clifton Baucom passed from this life Wednesday morning, September 7, 2005 at her residence in Grand Prairie, Texas at the age of 82.  Graveside services were at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 10th at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens in San Angelo, Texas, with Dr. Kyle Reese officiating.  Arrangements are by Johnson¹s Funeral Home.

"Cliff² was born on October 18, 1922 in Virginia.  She married James Marvin Baucom on April 25, 1945 in Washington, D.C.  They made their homes in Coleman and San Angelo, Texas for forty-three years.  Cliff was a member of the First Baptist Church in San Angelo, Texas.

Cliff is survived by five daughters; Jackie Rodgers of Arlington, Texas, Kathy Humble and husband Nathan of Crossville,Tennessee, Fae Day and husband Jonny of Grand Prairie, Texas, Jennifer Van Pelt and husband Joel of Amarillo, Texas, Elaine McAden and husband Wes; son, Jim Baucom and his wife Janis and daughter/grand-daughter Renee White and husband Lonnie all of San Angelo, two sisters; Marie Clifton of Atlanta, Georgia and Alfie Clifton of Jacksonville, Florida.  She is also survived by eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Cliff was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin in 1988.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Cal Farley¹s Boys Ranch, P.O. Box 1890, Amarillo,Texas 79174-0001.

Eunice Iola Terry, 92

Eunice Iola Terry, age 92, of Coleman, died Thursday, September 8, 2005 in Coleman.  Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 14, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. George Frasier officiating.  Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Eunice Iola Terry was the first of five children of Leonard Washington Stevens and Frankie Marion (Alexander) Stevens.  She was born in Copperas Cove, Texas on February 14, 1913.  The family moved to Coleman County in 1914, to the home place on Jim Ned Creek.  She lived most of her life in Coleman County and grew up on the family farm.  Iola attended school at Camp Colorado, carrying her lunch in a syrup bucket.  When the creek was high, she, her sister and brothers rode their horse, named Old Nellie, to get across the creek so they would not get wet.

She married Oscar Hill (Top) Terry, Jr. on July 23, 1933 in Coleman County.  They have four children: Margie R. Smith, Frankie R. Quinn, Oscar H. Terry, III and Donnie D. Terry.  She and Top farmed, raised turkeys, chickens and had three different dairy farms.  They also had a sweet potato farm at Rochester, Texas.  Iola worked alongside Top in all of these endeavors.  She was a wonderful cook, kept house and reared their children.  She loved having a garden and growing flowers.  She had a real green thumb.  Tomatoes and squash were her favorite.  Iola was an avid collector.  She had a rock collection that was never ending.  In her 90¹s she was still hunting rocks.

She sewed and made most of her children¹s clothes.  At one time she made beautiful western shirts for the men in the family and her friends.  Iola like to travel and she made several trips to Colorado and California.  A great love of hers was her handmade quilts.  She made all her family members quilts.  There are pictures of 30 of her quilts and some she didn¹t make pictures of and some she made more than one of the same kind.  Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren have a quilt hand stitched by her.  The last quilt she made was in 1999 for her first great-great grandson.  Iola was a Baptist, a volunteer at the Coleman Senior Center and worked for Concepts of Care as a home health provider.

Iola was preceded in death by her husband Top in March 1974; a grandson Marlon Hill Terry; her brothers Boyd L. Stevens, Aaron R. Stevens; a sister Louise Altman.

She is survived by two sons, Donnie Terry of Coleman, Texas and Oscar Terry of Grand Junction, Colorado; two daughters, Frankie Quinn of Abilene, Texas and Margie Smith of Midland, Texas; nine grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren; one brother, Winifred A. (Dell) Stevens of Coleman, Texas.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Big Country, 4601 Hartford, Abilene, Texas 79605.  Family visitation will be held today (Tuesday, September 13) from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lloyd Aaron Halmon, 72

Lloyd Aaron Halmon, age 72 of Santa Anna, Texas passed away Friday, September 9, 2005 in his home.  Funeral services were held Monday, September 26, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. in the Walker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bruce Hess, Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Santa Anna, officiating.  Interment followed with full military honors in the Santa Anna Cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Home of Coleman.  Pallbearers were Justin Halmon, Jimmy Shields, Rode Chambers, Charles Humphries, Jason Dane and Jeffrey Halmon.

He was born to J. C. and Ruby Thomason Halmon on June 12, 1933 in Coleman County where he met his life love, Yvonne Armstrong.  They were united in marriage on May 26, 1955 at the Northside Baptist Church of Coleman.  The Halmons lived in Coleman and Abilene before settling in Santa Anna.  Their 50 years of marriage produced three children, Russell Halmon of Austin, Texas, Cheree and son-in-law Mike Martin and Corry Halmon all of Santa Anna; three grandchildren, Peyton Morris, Makaylah Morris and Dalton Martin.  Other survivors include one sister, Billie Marie and brother-in-law Glen Chambers of Bedford, Texas; one brother, Charles and sister-in-law Ruby Halmon of Coleman.

Lloyd worked for various area companies including Martin Brick Company, Foremost Dairies and Santa Anna Tile Company.  He then worked for Superior Cable for 30 years, where he retired in 1996.  He retired from the National Guard with 35 years of service.  Lloyd loved to read and kept a garden in his yard for years but his greatest love was of being a grandfather, father and husband.  The family would like to express their deepest thanks and gratitude for the love and support and prayers of the community.  They ask that all memorials be made to the American Cancer Association.

Julia Frances Futrell, 91

Julia Frances Futrell, 91, of Abilene, died Friday, September 9, 2005, at her residence.  Chapel services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 12, 2005, at Community Memorial Funeral Home, 1443 N. 2nd Street.  Burial followed in Coleman Cemetery, with Rev. Louis Johnson officiating.

Mrs. Futrell was born in Bronte, Texas to the late O. C. and Rosa (Lambert) Hardin.  She moved to Abilene from Coleman several years ago.  She went to nursing school in San Angelo and worked as a private duty LVN.  She was a Baptist and a member of North Park Baptist Church.  She married Harold Futrell in Abilene in 1955.  He preceded her in death in 2001.

She is survived by three brothers-in-law, D. K. Futrell and wife, Lela, of Abilene, W. R. "Bill" Futrell and Don Futrell, both of Midland; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Bridges of Phoenix, Arizona; and seven nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two brothers, A. J. "Butch" Hardin and David J. Hardin.

Mary Payne Winandy, 77

Mary Payne Winandy, age 77, of San Angelo, Texas passed away Friday, September 9, 2005 at 1:15 p.m. at her residence in San Angelo.  Services will be today (Tuesday) at 2:30 p.m. at the Santa Anna Cemetery Pavilion with Rev. Bruce Hess officiating.  Interment will following with Henderson Funeral Home of Santa Anna in charge of arrangements.

Mary was born May 4, 1928 in Cleburne, Texas to the late W. L. "Dink" and Mary Jane Sorrells Payne.  She was reared in Santa Anna, graduating from Santa Anna High School in 1946.  On December 10, 1974 Mary married James Winandy in San Angelo and they had celebrated thirty years of marriage.  Mary had been a resident of San Angelo for the past 47 years and was a member of the Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, James Winandy of San Angelo, Texas; two sons, Bobby Woodard of San Angelo, Texas and Tom Woodard of San Angelo, Texas; a sister, Dorothy Priddy of Bloomfield, New Mexico; three brothers, J. W. Payne of San Francisco, California, Jimmy Payne of San Antonio, Texas and Roy Payne of Brownwood, Texas; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Evelyn Shields, 71

Evelyn Shields, age 71, long-time Odessa resident, died Saturday, September 10, 2005 at River Springs Health Care Center in San Marcos, Texas.  Funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 12 in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Sam Wilson officiating.  Burial followed in the Santa Anna Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman, Texas.

She was born Evelyn Joyce Arthur on November 11, 1933 in Santa Anna, Texas, a daughter of Mildred J. Williams Arthur and the late William Preston Arthur.  She grew up in Santa Anna where she attended school.  On January 28, 1949 she married Robert Shields in Santa Anna and he preceded her in death on November 5, 1997.  She lived in Odessa for 40 years and was a secretary/bookkeeper for a grocery store.  She had lived in San Marcos for the past two years.  She was Baptist and had been a member of the Women¹s Auxiliary of the VFW in Odessa.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Bobby Lynn and Kaye Shields of Austin, Texas; one daughter and son-in-law, Susie and Mike Hoagland of Austin, Texas; her mother, Mildred Arthur of San Marcos, Texas; five grandchildren, Jennifer Shields Holling, Ben Shields, Carrie Roberts, Haylee Hoagland, Robbie Hoagland; three great-grandchildren, Chloe Shields, Nicholas Austin, Dylan Hawk Holling; two brothers, Jerry Arthur of Junction, Texas, J. W. Arthur of Jasper, Texas; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Tylene Wright, Edith Gilbert, Leona and Mark Frazee, Leo and Louise Shields.

Paul Boyd Davis, 59

Paul Boyd Davis, age 59, passed away Thursday, September 15, 2005 at Clarendon.  Funeral services were 2:00 p.m. Saturday in Robertson Chapel of Memories with Steve Cook of Clarendon officiating.  Burial followed in Citizens Cemetery in Clarendon, under the direction of Robertson Funeral Directors, Inc. of Clarendon.

Mr. Davis was born December 5, 1945 in Abilene and was an Amarillo resident before moving to Clarendon five years ago.  He married Jimmie Marie Tomlinson on June 20, 1977 at Stamford.  He was a US Army Veteran of the Vietnam War.  He had worked most of his life in law enforcement with the State Police and various other agencies.  He was a Methodist.  He was preceded in death by a daughter, Amanda Gayle Davis, on March 28, 1978.

Survivors include his wife Marie Davis of Clarendon; four sons, Gene Tomlinson of Abilene, Christopher Davis of Carson City, Nevada, Jon Davis of Clarendon, Matthew Worth of Carrollton; two daughters, Sarah Elizabeth Davis of Foley, Alabama and Shana Worth of Carrollton; two brothers; one sister; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Doris Tillman, 82

Doris Tillman, age 82 of Coleman, died Friday, September 16, 2005 at Coleman County Medical Center.  A private graveside service was held at the Coleman City Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

She was born Doris Elena Dunn on December 20, 1922 in the Shields Community, the daughter of George Henry Dunn, Sr. and Sarah Shamblin Dunn.  She grew up and attended school in Shields and in Coleman.  She married Albert Cecil (A. C.) Tillman on August 28, 1942 in Coleman.  He preceded her in death on February 8, 2004.  She was a homemaker and member of Concho Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Larry Tillman of Coleman; granddaughters, Krystle Tillman, Miranda Tillman and Amelia Tillman all of Ft. Stockton; three brothers, Rev. Raymond Dunn, and wife Ozell and Burlie Dunn , both of Midland, and George Henry Dunn, Jr., and wife Wanda of Grand Prairie; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Lillie and Cecil Moss of Seattle, Washington, Joe M. Tillman of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, Elmo Tillman of Ft. Gibson, Oklahoma and several nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her husband and two sisters.  Memorials may be made to the donor’s favorite charity.

Norma Kay DeLuna, 50

Norma Kay DeLuna of Tampa, Florida passed away on Thursday, September 16, 2005.

Norma Kay was bom on May 31, 1955 in Coleman, Texas.  She was a homemaker and reared her family in Abilene until 1993.  She lived her final years in Tampa, Florida with her children and husband.

Survivors include her husband Herman of Tampa; children Kenneth Norman of Lubbock, Kevin Aaron of Abilene, Candace Bianca of Tampa, Herman “Dundee” of Panama City, Florida, Gilbert Joseph of Tampa, Ashley Jolene of Tampa; brothers Jerry Lee Alvarado of Winters and Edward Alvarado of San Angelo; her father Eduardo M. Alvarado of Bayard, New Mexico; and eight grandchildren.  She also has several family members in the Big Country.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Angela and her mother, Frances.

Juanita Haynes, 86

Funeral services for Juanita Haynes, age 86, of Brownwood were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 22, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Don Scroggs officiating.  Interment followed in the Trickham Cemetery, under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home of Brownwood.  Mrs. Haynes passed away on Sunday, September 18, 2005 at Brownwood Regional Medical Center.

She was born on September 18, 1919 in Wetumpka, Oklahoma to Charles and Laura Wagner Reed.  She married Robert Haynes on December 12, 1960 in El Paso.  He preceded her in death on September 11, 1992.  Juanita was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church.  She also belonged to the Auxiliary of Brownwood Regional Medical Center where she logged more than 20,000 hours and over 20 years of service.  She also served two terms as president of the Auxiliary in 1991-1992 and 2000-2001.

Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy Ferguson of Ballinger, Jackie Basham and husband Jim of Dublin and Julia Taylor and husband Ronnie of Brownwood; four grandchildren, Jenny Ruppert and husband Brian of San Angelo, Dwayne Petty, Brian Wooley and wife Tammie of Weatherford, Jenae Taylor and Rachel Taylor, both of Brownwood; and three great-grandchildren, Megan Petty, Ashleigh Wooley and Cameron Wooley.

Jacqueline "Jackie" Joyner, 83

Jacqueline "Jackie" Joyner, 83, a cook, died Sunday, Sept. 18, 2005, at a Fort Worth hospital.  Funeral was held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, at Bisbee Baptist Church.  Burial followed  at Moore Memorial Garden, under the direction of Brown, Owens & Brumley Funeral Home of Fort Worth.

Jacqueline Joyner was born March 10, 1922, in Rockwood to Carrol and Vera Lovelady.  Jackie was preceded in death by her husband, Truman.

Survivors: Son, Charles Johnson of Fort Worth; daughter, Linda Moss and husband, Harry Turner, of Fort Worth; stepsons, Bob and wife, Lena, Tom and wife, Kathy, and Jerry and Glenn Holdridge, all of Fort Worth, Harold Gene Holdridge of Benbrook and Bruce Joyner of Washington; stepdaughter, Carol Joyner of California; sister, Doris Starnes of Brownwood; grandchildren, Chris and Terry Moss and Renee Smith; and five great-grandchildren.

Richard “Rick” Compton, 43

Richard “Rick” Compton, age 43, a resident of Irving, Texas for thirty years, formerly of Coleman, Texas, died Monday, September 19, 2005 in Irving.  A visitation was held 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, September 22, 2005 at Donnelly’s Colonial Funeral Home.  Memorials may be made to the S. P. C. A.

He was born November 8, 1961 in Dallas, Texas to Richard L. and Patricia Ellen Raymer Compton.  Rick loved car racing.  Preceded in death by his grandparents, A. E. Smokey and Glynn Raymer of Coleman; grandparents, Harvey and Letha Compton of Irving and his uncle, Kenneth G. Compton.

Survivors include his parents, Dick and Pat Compton of Irving; uncle and aunts, Bobby and Peggy Compton of Irving, Judy Compton of Lancaster; and a large number of cousins.

R. Floyd Price, Jr., 83

R. Floyd Price, Jr. age 83 of Kerrville, passed away Tuesday, September 20, 2005 in a local care center.  Services will be held Friday, September 23, 2005, 10:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church officiated by Dr. Sam Junkin and Dr. Buran F. Phillips.  Interment will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery.  Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Grimes Funeral Chapels of Kerrville.

He was born June 10, 1922 in Waxahachie, Texas to Rufus Floyd, Sr. and Aubie (Sims) Price.  On May 15, 1945 he married Gloria Andrews in Waxahachie, Texas.  He was a prior resident of Coleman, Texas having graduated from Coleman High School in 1939.  Floyd served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.  He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Kerrville, Kerrville Masonic Lodge, Alzafar Shrine; Scottish Rite, Kerrville Rotary Club where he was a past president twice, Riverhill Country Club, Hill Country Trap and Skeet Club, Knights Templer, Commandry #7, Hill Country Shrine Club, Kerrville #305 and Royal Arch Mason, Kerrville #240 R & S. M.  He was a former member of the Jesters.  He started the Kerrville MLS and was past president of Kerrville Board of Realtors.

Survivors include wife, Gloria Price of Kerrville; daughters, Edie Barton and husband, Paul of Ft. Collins, Colorado and Liz Price of Kerrville; son, Preston Andrew Price and wife, Susan of Covington, Louisiana; sister, Helen Lois Stafford and husband Charles of Coleman, Texas; grandchildren, Kellie Price, Cris Price, Kimberly Price, Taylor Price, Damien Barton and Blaire Barton.

James Ray Smith, 80

James Ray Smith, born on December 30, 1924, went to be with the Lord on September 20, 2005.  Funeral services will be held at Coleman First Baptist Church at 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 23, 2005 with Jeremy Smith assisted by Rev. John Stanislaw officiating.  Burial will be at Gouldbusk Cemetery immediately following the ceremony.  Family visitation is this evening (Thursday) from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home.  Arrangements are under the direction of Walker Funeral Home.

James was a devoted husband, father and friend to all those who knew him.  He loved his extended family, with nieces and nephews constantly visiting him at his home in Coleman.  He was very skillful in woodworking and mechanics and he used both of these skills to build and fix things for those around him.  A World War II vet, he loved to go out to his son Kenny¹s place and piddle with animals and farming in his spare time.  James loved carpentry and the skill was passed down to his four sons who employ these skills today.  He will be sorely missed by all those who knew him.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Smith of Coleman; sons, Michael Smith of Coleman, Johnny and his wife Gale Smith of Virginia, Jimmy and his wife Debbie Smith of Virginia, and Kenny and his wife Gwen Smith of Coleman.  He was also survived by grandsons Jason Smith of Virginia, Josh Smith of Dublin, Mark Smith of Virginia, Jeremy Smith of Dallas and Jeffery and his wife Brandi Smith of Eula.  He had two granddaughters, Casie and Shanelle Smith of Abilene as well as three great-granddaughters.  He was also survived by his brothers, Ben Smith of Seminole, Sam Smith of Winters and Gene Smith of Coleman; sisters, Partha McMillan of Coleman, Alene Landess of Brownfield, Louise Kerrick of Denver City, Inez Martin of Coleman, Carolyn Bowen of Sundown, Cleo Smith of Brownfield and Josie Labonte of Hawaii.

James was preceded in death by his parents Rich and Rene Smith, a sister, Erlene, and a brother, R. E.

Lee Hamilton, 65

Lee Hamilton, 65 years of age, was born February 14, 1940 in Coleman, Texas and passed away in Abilene on September 21, 2005.  Services will be held at Walker Funeral Home Chapel on September 24, 2005 at 10 a.m. with Rev. John Stanislaw officiating with full military honors at the Coleman City Cemetery before the interment.

Lee, the son of the late W. R. and Ida Hamilton, had lived in Coleman County most of his life.  He was retired from the United States Air Force and the Postal Service.  He was married to Judy Young on May 22, 1985 and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Coleman.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Hamilton of Coleman; five daughters, Trish Tomer of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Crystal Norrell and Sherry Bragee, both of St. Louis, Missouri, Heather Hamilton of Coleman, Leisha Hamilton of Gatesville, Texas; four sons, Ed Ellis of Lamirada, California, John Reed, Earl Reed and Chad Hamilton, all of Albuquerque, New Mexico; four brothers  W. R. Hamilton, Guy Hamilton, Bill Hamilton and James Hamilton; 26 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Freddie Windle McMeans, 85

Freddie Windle McMeans, 85, retired U.S. Navy, died Wednesday, September 21, 2005 in Granbury.  Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 23, 2005 at the First United Methodist Church in Granbury.  Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. Friday, graveside with Military Honors in the Valera Cemetery, Valera, Texas, Coleman County, Texas.  Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Wiley Funeral Home, 400 Highway 377 East, Granbury, Texas.

Mr. McMeans was born December 13, 1919 in Pandora, Texas to Curtis and Elise McMeans.  He married Jene Arnett on March 28, 1953 in Corpus Christi, Texas.  He retired from the U.S. Navy having survived in the Pearl Harbor attack aboard the USS New Orleans which was also know as the "Miracle Ship."  He worked for Chicago Pneumatic in Fort Worth.  He was also a developer for Leonard Enterprise in Granbury where he helped develop Pecan Plantation, DeCordova Bend Estates and Indian Harbor.  He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Granbury, member of the Granbury Masonic Lodge #392 and the Scottish Rite Shrine.

Survivors include his wife, Jene McMeans of Granbury; son, Freddie W. McMeans, Jr. of Fort Worth; grandsons, Paden and Cody.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Melody B. McMeans, granddaughter: Courtney McMeans and parents: Curtis and Elsie McMeans.  The family requests memorials be made to any Scottish Rite Hospital.

Colleen Hayes, 79

Colleen Hayes, age 79, of Coleman, Texas passed away Thursday September 22, 2005 at 10:37 p.m. at Brownwood Regional Medical Center.  Services were Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Elm Street Church of Christ with Joe Hailey, pastor officiating.  Interment followed at the Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Henderson Funeral Home of Coleman.

Colleen was born October 23, 1925 in Pear Valley, Texas to the late James Luther and Dora G. Simons Jones.  She attended Lohn and San Angelo Schools.  On December 17, 1942, Colleen married Ralph J. (Jim) Hayes in San Angelo and they celebrated fifty-five years of marriage.  Jimmie preceded her in death in 1997.  She was a member of the Elm Street Church of Christ where she was the former Tuesday School Director and teacher.  Colleen was a homemaker and employed with J. C. Penney Company and then Coleman County Clerk¹s office until her retirement in 1992.

Survivors include two sons, Mike and wife Becky Hayes of Lake Brownwood, Texas and Phillip and wife Shirley of Venus, Texas; three daughters, Cheryl and husband Gene Turney of Burnet, Texas, Cebia and husband Mark Martin of Brownwood, Texas and Jenny and husband Bob Martin of West, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Elsie Jones of Abilene, Texas and Edith Noe of Annapolis, Indiana; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Lavada Evans, 82

Lavada Evans, age 82, of Valera, Texas passed away Friday, September 23, 2005 at 11:55 a.m. at Brownwood Regional Hospital.  Services were Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at the Brown Ranch Cemetery with Loyd Hopper and Carroll Hinds officiating.  Interment followed at the Brown Ranch Cemetery under the direction of Henderson Funeral Home of Coleman.

Lavada was born February 24, 1923 in Fisk, Texas to the late Oly Boston and Gladys Viola Cox Hopper.  She was reared in south Coleman County and graduated in 1940 from Mozelle High School.  Lavada was an Army WAC, serving her country during World War II.  In Coleman County on July 9, 1945, Lavada married Charles Henry Evans and they celebrated thirty-one years of marriage.  Charles preceded her in death in 1976.  Lavada was a member of the Catholic Church and a bookkeeper for Overall-Morris Memorial Hospital and worked in the Coleman County Tax Assessor¹s office.

Survivors include a daughter, Nelda and husband Roy Dean Henson of Santa Anna, Texas; two sisters, Addie Hinds of Glen Cove, Texas and Grace Loyd of Mozelle, Texas; a brother, Loyd Hopper of Coleman, Texas; eight grandchildren; and several great and great-grandchildren.  Lavada was preceded in death by two sons, Don Evans in 1946 and Velton Evans in 1989 and by one sister and four brothers.

Frances Roberta Sparks, 85

Frances Roberta Sparks, age 85, of Coleman, died Saturday, September 24, 2005 at Coleman County Medical Center.  Graveside funeral service was held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, September 25 at Burleson Memorial Park with Rev. John Stanislaw officiating.  Services were under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home, Coleman, Texas.

She was born October 13, 1919 in Keller, Texas, the daughter of Roy and Leona Pulliam Brown.  She grew up in Burleson where she graduated high school.  She lived at Lake Worth most of her life and moved to Coleman in 2001.  She worked at Swift¹s for 15 years and Mid-Continent Oil Company for 12 years, retiring in 1980.  She was a member of Lake Worth First Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Rusty Witt of Fort Worth, Texas, Roland and wife Pam Witt of Coleman, Texas; three grandchildren, Melissa Weber, Julie Witt, Chance Witt; four great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by one son, James R. "Bubba" Witt in 1966 and a brother William Austin Brown.

Perry Ray Crabb, 65

Perry Ray Crabb, 65, a retired pharmaceutical sales representative, passed away Saturday, September 24, 2005 at home.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. today (Tuesday) at Laurel Land Memorial Chapel of Fort Worth with
burial following at Laurel Land Memorial Park of Fort Worth.

Ray was born in Coleman on September 25, 1939, and graduated from Coleman High School.  He loved motorcycles, good times and traveling.  Ray was very generous and caring.  Ray never met a stranger and loved everyone and
everyone loved him.  He retired from Mission Pharmacal Company and was a member of First Baptist Church of Coleman.  Ray was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Perry Crabb; his mother, Sammie Ruth DuBois; daughter, Deborah Sue Ferguson; and uncle, Ray DuBois.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Dortha Jean Crabb; one sister, Rieta Sue Bowman; one daughter, Pamela Kay Guynes; grandchildren, Ta¹rell, Erica and Peyton Guynes; nieces and nephews, Douglas, Dwayne and David Tucker, Jay Bransom, Jana McRay, Joy Dix; one great-nephew, Jerrett Bransom.

Lucille Sorrells, 80

Lucille Sorrells, age 80, of Santa Anna, died Wednesday, September 28, 2005 at her residence.  Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 1 in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Paul Smith officiating.  Burial will follow in the Cedar Point Cemetery in Brown County, Texas, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman.

She was born Vera Lucille Fortson on July 26, 1925 in Brown County, Texas, a daughter of Roger and Vera Lucinda Sherrod Fortson.  She grew up in Brown County and attended school at Brookesmith.  Lucille moved to Coleman in 1977 where she worked in X-Ray and Lab at the Coleman hospital for many years.  She was a member of Community Baptist Church.

Survivors include one sister, Lizzie May Bien of Woodward, Oklahoma; several nieces and nephews including Bill Bien of Sharon, Oklahoma and Linda Shore of Woodward, Oklahoma.

Memorials may be made to ALS Association, 27001 Agoura Road, Calabasas Hills, California 91301-5104.  Family visitation will be held on Friday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
