J. D. Jackson, 71

J. D. Jackson, age 71, a Santa Anna native, died December 22, 2000 in Austin.  Services were held December 26, 2000 at the King-Strickland Chapel in LaGrange, Texas with burial in the LaGrange City Cemetery.

Mr. Jackson, the fifth son of the late Otis Marion and Ruby Mae Davis Jackson was born May 2, 1929.  He was a 1945 graduate of Santa Anna High School and served in the U.S. Air Force.  Mr. Jackson was married to Laura Faye Mitchell, April 12, 1952 and they celebrated 45 years of marriage.  He was a retired meat inspector for the State Health Department.

Survivors include his wife of LaGrange; five sons; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; one brother, T. A. Jackson of Martinsburg, West Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers: Raymond, Daymond and Billy Bob Jackson.

Rozella A. "Rosie" Beal, 76

Rozella A. “Rosie” Deal, 76, died Monday, December 25, 2000, at a local hospice center.  Graveside services were 1 p.m. Friday at Elmwood Memorial Park in Abilene, under the direction of Owens and Brumley Funeral Home, with Rev. Rick Thompson, pastor of Colonial Baptist Church, officiating.

Miss Deal was born at Coleman and was retired from Abilene Linen Company.  She was a member of Colonial Baptist Church and had lived at Wichita Falls since 1991.

Survivors include two sisters, Inez Gunnels of Wichita Falls and Vadine Spivey of Tucson, Arizona; three brothers, Eddie Beal of Coleman, Roland Beal of Big Spring and Freddie Deal of Abilene; and many nieces and nephews.

The family requests memorials be made to Colonial Baptist Church or Hospice of Wichita Falls.

Lillie Murle Parker, 80

Funeral service for Lillie Murle Parker, 80, of Chandler, was held at 1 p.m. Friday in the Higginbotham Chapel with Brad Arnold officiating.  Burial followed in Longbranch Cemetery, under the direction of Higginbotham Funeral Home.  Mrs. Parker died Monday, December 25, 2000 in Athens.

She was born December 16. 1920, in Coleman County to Virgil Damon and Addie Laura (Johnson) Benson.  She married Bobby Lee Parker in May of 1966 in Lubbock.  They then moved to Chandler where they lived for 25 years.  She was a Baptist.  She was preceded in death by her first husband. Pernal Hearn, three brothers two sisters. and two babies.

Survivors include husband, Bobby Lee Parker of Chandler; two daughters, Ida Watson and husband Harry of Kaufman, and Luann Dodd and husband, Jerry, of Athens; three brothers; Damon Benson of Amarillo, Charlie Benson of Rising Star, Cleo Benson of Ennis; sister, Neoma Cain of Rising Star; sister Lorene Ciark of Lake Buchanan, five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a host of friends.

J. W. Shamblin, 77

J. W. Shamblin, 77, died at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, December 26, 2000, at Covenant Medical Center at Lubbock after an illness.  Services were held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Second Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Howe, pastor, officiating.  Graveside services were at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Coleman City Cemetery, directed by Geo. C. Price Funeral Directors of Levelland.

Mr. Shamblin was born July 6, 1923 in Texas and had been a resident of Levelland since 1973, moving here from Abilene, Texas.  He was a member of Second Baptist Church and was a U. S. Army veteran of WW II.  He married Darleene Amarine, June 3, 1949 in Abilene, Texas.  He was a retired field foreman for Crown Central Petroleum.

Survivors include his wife, Darleene Shamblin of Levelland; a daughter, Vickie Hines of Charleston, South Caroline: a stepdaughter, Glenda Baucom of Granbury; a step-son. James Vineyard of Coleman: a brother, Doyle Shamblin of Tuscola; two sisters, Charlene Kelly of Abilene and Garaldine Stokes of Ira: six grandchildren, and 10 great- grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Ed Shamblin.

Walter Henry Pape, Jr., 78

Walter Henry Pape, Jr., 78, of Santa Anna, died Tuesday, December 26, 2000, at Westminster, Colorado.  Services
will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday,January 2, 2001, at Hopewell Baptist Church at Crews, with the Rev. Ferris Akins officiating.  Masonic graveside services will be in Crews Cemetery, directed by Winters Funeral Home.

Mr. Pape was born in Ballinger and grew up in Runnels County near Crews.  He served in the U. S. Army during WWII and lived in Colorado following his discharge.  He moved to the family farm in Santa Anna where he owned and operated Precision Drilling Company.  He was a Methodist and Mason.

Survivors include two sons, William Pape of Katy, Walter Pape of Cortez, Colorado; a daughter, Mary Sutherland of
Denver, Colorado; two sisters, Mary Louise Dunivan of Ashville, North Carolina, and Harvey Mae Faubion of Crews; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

Lola Maude Sears, 93

Lola Maude Sears, 93, a homemaker, passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2000, at a Granbury nursing facility.  Funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Wiley Funeral Home in Granbury, with burial following in Cresson Cemetery in Cresson.

Mrs. Seals was born Lola Maude Peveler on April 19, 1907, in Granbury to Lewis and Mary Kerr Peveler.  She married Thomas Dewey “Dick” Sears in July 1935 in Weatherford.  She was a member of Cresson United Methodist Church.  Mrs. Sears was preceded in death by her husband.

Survivors include nieces and nephews:  Mary Joe Phillips Dozier of Coleman, Margaret Phillips Randel of Abilene, Clay Phillips Jr. of Granbury, Kay Beheler Young of California and Rus Beheler of Fort Worth; 14 great-nieces and great- nephews: and several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Juanita B. Strother, 75

Juanita B. Strother, age 75, of Abilene, formerly of Sweetwater, died Friday, December 29, 2000, at an Abilene hospital.  Services were 2 p.m. Sunday at McCoy Chapel of Memories, with Jimmy Brown officiating.  Burial was in the Garden of Memories Cemetery directed by McCoy Funeral Home.

Mrs. Strother was born at Santa Anna and married Cullen C. Strother at Coleman.  She was a member of the Avenue B Church of Christ and had lived in Sweetwater until a year and a half ago, when she moved to Abilene.  Mrs. Strother was a homemaker.  Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors are a daughter, Linda Strother of Abilene; a son, Dennis Strother of Andrews; a sister, Ann Rozzell of Abilene; a brother, Charles Hayes of Yuman, Arizona; and a grandson.

H. D. Kerbow, 80

Funeral services for H. D. Kerbow, age 80, of Coleman were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Walker Funeral Home Chapel with James Bailey, minister of Coleman Church of Christ officiating.  Burial followed in Coleman City Cemetery, under the direction of Walker Funeral Home.  Mr. Kerbow died at 6:25 a.m Saturday, December 30, 2000 at Brownwood Regional Medical Center.

He was born October 6, 1920, at Cooper, Texas to Henry David and Mary Grimes Kerbow.  He was married to Irene Miles on February 13, 1947, in Brownwood.  He lived in Coleman from 1948 to 1953 when he moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico, and then he moved back to Coleman in 1971.  He was retired from White Sands Missile Range.  Mr. Kerbow served in the U. S. Army during World War II, and was a member of the Coleman Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Irene Kerbow of Coleman; four daughters, Paulette Woodruff of Colorado Springs, CoIorado, Carol Hollis of San Antonio, New Mexico, Annette Conley of Bangs and Debra Hyden of Mason; two sons, Gary Kerbow of Coleman and Mike Kerbow of Seguin; one sister, Charline Faulkner of Phoenix, Arizona; 14 grandchildren: and 18 great-grandchildren.

Eava Mae “Pat” DeWitt, 88

Eava Mae “Pat” DeWitt age 88 of Santa Anna passed away Sunday, December 31, 2000 at 9:30 a.m. at the Coleman County Medical Center.  Graveside services will be Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Mukewater Cemetery with Rev. Raymond Jones officiating.  Henderson Funeral Home of Santa Anna is in charge of arrangements.  Family visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Henderson Funeral Home.

Pat was born February 16, 1912 in Bangs, Texas to the late Andrew and Marie Walker Avinger.  She married Thomas Eldon DeWitt in Fort Worth on January 7, 1939 and they celebrated 36 years of marriage.  Thomas preceded her in death in 1975.  Pat was a longtime resident of Fort Worth moving to Santa Anna in 1977 and was a member of the Presbyterian Church.  She was employed as a secretary until retirement.

Survivors:  sister and brother-in-law, Etta Earle and Nick Buse of Santa Anna, Texas; brother and sister-in-law, George and Geneieve Avinger of Lake Kiowa, Texas; niece, Earla Pallette of May, Texas; great nephew, Tim Pallette of May, Texas.

Mary Baker Trammell, 64

Mary Baker Trammell, age 64, of Coleman, died Sunday, December 31, 2000, at Coleman County Medical Center.  Funeral services will be 11 a. m. Wednesday (January 3, 2001) at Concho Baptist Church with Dr. Charles Sheffield officiating, assisted by the Rev. Steve Holcomb.  Burial will follow in the Coleman Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral  Home.  Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p. m. tonight (Tuesday) at the funeral home.

Mrs. Trammell was born September 25, 1936, in Burkett, Texas, a daughter of James A. Baker, Sr. and Lillie and Lillie Cason Baker.  She was reared and attended schools in Burkett and Coleman.  On June 16, 1953, she married James L. Trammell, Jr. in Coleman.  She retired from Lubbock National Bank after 41 years in the banking industry, as a Loan Officer and as Vice-President.  While living in Lubbock, she was an instructor for the American Institute of Banking in Lubbock, a member of the West Texas Homebuilders Auxiliary Association, President of the South Plains Republican Club; President of the Legal Aid Society, Board Member of the Y. W. C. A., a loaned executive for the United Way.  She was a member of Concho Baptist Church in  Coleman.

Survivors include her husband, James L. Trammell, Jr., of Coleman; a son and daughter-in-law, James L. (Jay) and Terry Trammell, III, of Singapore; a daughter and son-in-law, Marci and Kenny Owens of Plainview; five sisters, Essie Hunter, Thelma Cox, Madie Burton, and Ovella Harris, all of Coleman, and Ronnie Winslett of Brownwood; seven brothers, Jerry Baker of Odessa, J. C. Baker of Lovington, New Mexico, Tony Baker of Vernon, Howard Baker of Coleman, James Baker, Bob Baker and Ed Baker, all of Brownwood; her mother-in-law, Ruby Trammell of Coleman; six grandchildren, Jason Gower of Lubbock, Jared and Jonathan Gower of Plainview, Stephanie Boyd of Amarillo, Lauren and Marci Ann Trammell of Singapore; and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and three brothers.

Pallbearers will be the Deacons from Concho Baptist Church: Fred Knowles, Mike Calk, Travis Sanders, Billy McCorkle, Tommy Connelly, and Grady Boyd.  Memorials may be made to the Parkinsons Association of Lubbock, 4102 24th Street, Lubbock, Texas 79408.

Mary Baker Trammell


 
John Chaney, 93

John Chaney, age 93, former Coleman resident, died Sunday, December 31, 2000, in Palestine.  Funeral services will be held  at 2:00 p. m. Friday at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Dean Coultas officiating.  Burial, with Masonic graveside rites, will follow at Tuscola Cemetery.  Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Mr. Chaney was born September 22, 1907 in Moran, Texas to William F. Chaney, Sr., and Maude Bearden Chaney.  He grew up in Tuscola and graduated from high school there.  He lived on the family farm near Tuscola, later lived in Lawn and then moved to Coleman in 1964.  He moved to Palestine in 1996.  He was a farmer and retired from Santa Fe Railroad.  On January 7, 1990 he married Ida Mae Gray and she preceded him in death on August 12, 1993.  He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Coleman where he was a member of the Friendly Fellows Sunday School Class and a long-time member of the Chancel Choir.  He was a 50 year member of both Masonic Lodge #1230 and Eastern Star Chapter #30.

Survivors include nieces and nephews, including Doyle Chaney of Phoenix, Arizona and Dolores Moore of Palestine, Texas, and Glenda Hineman; and a sister-in-law, Beunah Chaney of Elkhart, Texas and Jo Chaney of Prescott, Arizona.
