D. H. Weatherford was born
January 13, 1862. "Uncle Dave," as he
was called by some, lived in Coleman County
many years. He was working for a Mr.
Davis, living in a tent on the Davis place,
when the Coursey family first knew
him. Later, he began to work for
Ernest Coursey. He had a very small
house on the bank of the Bachelor Prong
branch, on the Coursey home place, for
several years, and was a very dependable
hard worker, starting very early and working
late. All the Coursey family grew very fond
of him, and he was almost considered a
member of the family. He and
Granddaddy Coursey were great pals.
They had discussions about politics and
especially enjoyed discussing Jim and Ma
Ferguson. The Coursey children looked
forward to the sacks of candy he often
brought them, and helped them with their
work; always jolly. He helped the
family over twenty years, and they all loved
and appreciated him very much. Later,
in the 1920's, Ernest Coursey bought a place
west of the home place, and Mr. Weatherford
lived in a little house on this place for
many years, and it has always been called
"the Weatherford Place." He worked
here as long as he was able to work, then in
about 1946 he went to live with his nephew,
George Hartsell, in San Angelo, until his
death in 1951, buried in San Angelo.
