     John Petty (December 9, 1801 in Tennessee-March 26, 1882 at Pettytown, Texas) was one of five sons born to Joel Petty (1779-1819 in Tennessee).  His brothers were Theophilus, Joel Jr., Hubert and Dock.  They came to Texas around 1850, settling in Bastrop County.  John was the only one to remain at Pettytown, a community named for him and his kinsmen.  John married about 1820, Elizabeth Dawson (February 5, 1805-August 3, 1873), the daughter of Samuel Dawson and Annie Ross.  They reared fifteen children, with their sixteenth child,  Martha, dying in infancy.  They were:

 

     (1) Jane, married Samuel Queen and had nine children.

 

     (2) Edna married Elias Queen (a brother to Sam), died at the birth of their first child.

 

     (3) Gipson, his wife was called Aunt Pollie.

 

     (4) Anderson Petty.

 

     (5) Levicia married Joab Riddle, nine children.

 

     (6) Ann Catherine married (1) Thomas Williams, four children; and (2) Levi Spinks Pogue.

 

     (7) Joanna married Isaac Barber, seven children.

 

     (8) James Marion married Arrena Fowler.

 

     (9) Elizabeth married Warner Hayhurst, two children.

 

     (10) Johnson married Cynthia Statira Peacock, ten children.

 

     (11) Samuel Dawson married Mary Hurldleston, four children.

 

     (12) Alcie married Henderson Hayhurst, several children.

 

     (13) Tempie Arminta was married several times, twice to first cousins of hers, five children.

 

     (14) Joseph Riley, married Martha Elizabeth Caseby, nine children.

 

     (15) Mary.

 

     Anderson Alexander Petty, June 8, 1828-May 11, 1889, married Sarah Ann Vaughn, June 9, 1830-April 1, 1903, both buried in Coleman, on May 12, 1849. They left Bastrop County about 1876 and came to Coleman County.  He served as Tax Assessor of Coleman County from 1884-1889. They raised eleven children:

 

     (1) Elizabeth, April 6, 1850-September 1, 1929, married Wylie Jefferson Stobaugh, August 20, 1849-1921, on March 5, 1868.  They first settled on a farm at Rockwood, later moving to Coleman where Wylie Jefferson bought a wagon yard and ran it for several years. They had ten children:

 

       (1a)John Anderson "Buck," February 9, 1869 Bastrop County- February 23, 1946 in San Antonio, married Rachel Davis, October 8, 1873 Springfield, Missouri-July 12, 1963, both buried in Coleman, on January 1, 1893 at Glen Cove. Rachel's brother was John Houston Davis of Glen Cove (see Moses M. Turney). Their children:

 

          (a) Callie (Layton), September 17, 1894-January 15, 1982, buried Coleman. Two children, David and Rosella.

 

          (b) Carl, deceased.

 

          (c) Ellie Mae.

 

          (d) Gladys K.

 

          (e) Grace

 

       (1b) David M.;

 

       (1c) Hollis R., June 3, 1872-June 15, 1917, married Essie R. Lewis, September 13, 1876-March 20, 1917, both buried Coleman;

 

      (1d) Sarah E.;

 

      (1e) Mary Ellie.

 

     (1f) Wylie Calvin, December 20, 1876 in Coleman-August 4, 1937 in Lorenzo, married Lula May Bodenhammer, September 26, 1880-September 11, 1966, both buried Coleman.

 

     (1g) Hugh.

 

     (1h) E. Tom, 1882-1928, buried Coleman.

 

     (1i) Walter Perry (see W.P. Stobaugh).

 

     (1j) Archibald Bertram ''Bert,'' (see Templeton W. [ Bud] Bartholomew).

 

     (2) Nancy Jane.

 

     (3) Joanna.

 

     (4) Martha Ann.

 

     (5) Mary Ellie, April 28, 1875-January 10, 1901, married William (Billy) Fletcher Smith, September 10, 1867 in Neshoba, Mississippi-March 18, 1917 in Loraine, both buried in Lone Wolf Cemetery in Colorado City, on November 11, 1894 in Coleman County, the son of Alexander Joseph and Elizabeth (Williams) Smith. They lived on the Cheatham farm near Rockwood where their first two children were born. Three children:

 

       (5a) Hollis Stobaugh, April 30, 1896, married Mollie Olean Rhodes, February 2, 1906-December 16, 1968, on August 13, 1927 in Pecos. He served in the Army in Dijon, France, in WW I. Hollis Stobaugh is still an active cattleman in Reeves County at the age of 88. There were two children:


         (5a1) David Alan, March 28, 1929, lives in Ward County, married Lea Nita Card, lives in Reeves County, four children:


           (5a1a) Vicki Lynn and J. L. Vernon have two children, Leslie Karen and Keat Kevin.

 

           (5a1b) Debra Ann and Gary Wayne Walker had Amy Michelle.

 

          (5a1c) Nancy Elizabeth (Libby) Bauerlein and Johnny Dan Painter had two children, Dana Lee and Doak Russell;


         (5a1d) David Alan Jr. and Marilyn Neslony had Ashley Marie.

 

        (5a2) William (Billy) Fletcher II, January 14, 1932, married Elizabeth Ann Kerr, reside in Spring. Four children:

 

         (5a2a) William Fletcher III and Judy Moore have Paige Ann, live in Austin.

 

         (5a2b) Paula Elizabeth.

 

         (5a2c) Wendi Kerr.

 

         (5a2d) Gailland Brooks.

 

       (5b) Elizabeth Ella, May 8, 1897.

 

       (5c) Alitha, born and died January 10, 1901, buried Lone Wolf Cemetery.


     (6) David Alexander.

 

     (7) Belle.

 

     (8) Acenath, September 27, 1863-February 13, 1938, married James David Horne (see James David Horne).

 

     (9) Elias Thompson (Tom), January 8, 1866-November 9, 1919, married Mary McFarland, 1872-1925, both buried Coleman, in Coleman County.  Two children, both born in Coleman County, Charles McFarland and Frances Randolph. Tom and his nephew, Hollis Stobaugh, were partners in the grocery business in Coleman at one time.

 

     (10) Aquilla May.

 

     (11) Jesse Anderson.

 

     Other children of Alexander Joseph, born 1834 in South Carolina, and Elizabeth (Williams) Smith, born 1860 in Mississippi, were: Maggie, Alice, Abbie, Anna, Nancy Emma, George Malcolm, Mary Ella and John Richard.
