John
Frances McSmith and family; wife, Jane,
daughter, Clara and son, Robert came to
Coleman County from Freestone County in
1922. A year later, another son, Hugh
and wife Zeola, sons Joe, Leroy and Newman
and a daughter Aletha followed. Both
families settled near Trickham. John
F. and Robert, owned and operated a meat
market in Trickham for some time, and later
turned to farming and ranching. Robert
married Annie Johnson and later moved to New
Mexico. John F., with his wife and
daughter, Clara, followed them to New
Mexico. Hugh and Zeola had another
son, Delbert and another daughter, Juanita
while living in the Trickham area, where
they farmed for a living. Hugh's
children attended the Trickham school.
The McSmith families were all of the Baptist
faith and Hugh was ordained a deacon in the
First Baptist Church of Trickham.
Hugh's second son
Leroy married Wilma Crippen of Santa Anna
and moved to New Mexico. The oldest
daughter Aletha was the only one of the
McSmiths to stay in Texas
continuously. She married Henry Barton
of Sweeny, Texas where she has lived since
1934.
In 1937 Hugh and Zeola moved their remaining
three children to New Mexico.
