John Morgan McQueen Family

      John Morgan McQueen, son of John Taylor and Eliza Ann (Diggs) McQueen, was born in Houston County, December 7, 1862 (see John Taylor McQueen).  Bennie Lou (Dollie) Crenshaw, daughter of Henry and Mahala Crenshaw, was born in Houston County, May 25, 1871.  John and Dollie were married July 22, 1886.  Twelve children were born to the McQueens, seven boys and five girls.  They resided in East Texas until 1905, when they moved to Coleman County.  At the time they moved here they had nine children.  John and six of the children came to Coleman by wagon, while Dollie and three of the children came by train. 

     Upon their arrival in the county they stayed with her brother, Lon Crenshaw and his wife, Mattie (Strother), who owned a hotel in Valera.  The McQueens then established their own home in Glen Cove.  The tenth child was born during the time they lived there.  A short time later, they moved to Silver Valley, where the two youngest children were born.  In 1911 they moved to the Fisk community and bought a farm about two miles northwest of Fisk, where they lived the remainder of their lives.  The younger children attended Brown Ranch School.  John McQueen died February 24, 1944, buried at Brown Ranch Cemetery.  Dollie McQueen and two of her sons continued living on the family farm until her death February 24, 1956, buried Brown Ranch Cemetery.  Their children:

     (1) Ulala Mahala (Lala), born February 19, 1889, married Luther Austin Kile, May 22, 1909 in Coleman County where they spent their entire married life.  Austin died February 13, 1971 and Lala, December 8, 1973, both buried at Brown Ranch.  They had six children, all reared in Coleman County and attended schools at Brown Ranch and Mozelle.  They are:

        (1a) Wesley Morgan, May 5, 1911, married Katie Lou Abernathy, January 2, 1937. They have no children and live in Coleman. Wesley farmed various places around the county until his retirement a few years ago (see M.C.M. Abernathy);

        (1b) Luther Preston, February 21, 1913, married Ruby Lane Pitts, July 22, 1939.  They live in Coleman and have one daughter, Dixie, April 4, 1962, who is now married to Lee Allen Bolen.  They live in Coleman and have one daughter, Lisa Michelle, June 28, 1981;

        (1c) Richard Curtis, July 16, 1915, married Oleta Sikes, May 22, 1952. They live in Sabinal (see Sikes family);

        (1d) Wayne Mack (twin), October 24, 1917, married (1) Pearl Stoup, December 23, 1939, had four children: Edward Mac, Patsy Lou, Janice Lynn and James Preston who died during his teens, January 23, 1967, buried at Coleman (see Edward Darwin Stoup).  Wayne and Pearl were divorced in 1959.  Wayne married (2) Pat Hall and lives in Burleson;

        (1e) Winnie May (twin), October 24, 1917, married J. R. Lane, September 2, 1938 (see Joel W. Jackson).  They lived in and around the Coleman area where J. R. farmed. In the 1950's they bought a farm northeast of the city on the Cross Plains highway where they lived until J. R.'s death.  Winnie now lives on a farm near Santa Anna.  They had five children:  Jim, Peggy, Ward, Rickey and Danny.  They attended Coleman schools.  Of the five children only Danny still lives in Coleman.  He was born February 24, 1949 in Coleman and married Sallie Currie, September 19, 1970, daughter of the late Herbert and Marguerite (Young) Currie, Jr.   Marguerite was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. C. Young of Coleman. Danny and Sallie have one daughter, Marguerite, born January 22, 1983;

     (1f) Bennie Houston, January 6, 1920, married Lois Beasley, January 6, 1945 and now live in Abilene. They have four children: James Curtis, Kay, Donna and Collin.

     (2) Cecilia Adell (Della), August 28, 1891, married Roy McAnally, August 29, 1911 (see McAnally).  They had two children: Jesse Roy (J. R.), August 16, 1916, now lives in Kermit, and Claud Arnold (Bud), July 19, 1918, now lives in Iran, both born in Coleman County.  After leaving the county, they spent most of their married life in Kermit.  Della died June 28, 1960 and Roy a few years later, both buried in Brown Ranch.

     (3) John Claud, June 26, 1893, never married.  He served in the Army during WW I, serving a tour of duty overseas.  Upon his return, he engaged in farming with his father and his brother Henry.  For sometime after their father's death, Claud and Henry remained on the home place.  When the farm was sold, they bought a home in Fisk where they lived many years.  Claud died June 18, 1973, buried in Brown Ranch.

     (4) Anna Lou, June 23, 1894, married Oran Haney, November 10, 1920 in a buggy in front of Rev. Reynolds residence in Santa Anna while he performed the ceremony.  They moved to a farm near Fisk.  They had four children:

        (4a) Gladyes Muriel, December 13, 1921, married Homer Metts, August 12, 1939 in Coleman (see John Metts).  Muriel now lives in Brownfield.

        (4b) Faye Earlene, June 28, 1923, married Edward Lynn, December 31, 1945, have two children, Donna Lou and Eddie Ray. They live near Kansas City, Missouri;

        (4c) Carl Ray, January 19, 1929, married Elizabeth Anne (Betty) Hifner, August 20, 1950. They have three children, James Ray, Jerry Lynn and Terry. Since their marriage they have lived in Independence, Missouri;

     (4d) Shirley Louise, November 26, 1933, married Aaron Claude (A.C.) Tredaway, November 25, 1950 in San Angelo. They live in Denver City and have two children, Kathy Diane and Alan Bryan. Oran died January 31, 1976 in Coleman. Anna now lives in Brownfield.

     (5) Alonza Hill (Lon), July 9, 1897, married Estell Jones, November 16, 1929 in Coleman County (see William Howard Taylor).
They had no children.   Lon farmed in and around the Fisk community.  They later lived in Coleman. He died May 31, 1960, buried in Brown Ranch.

     (6) Columbus J. (Lum), September 9, 1899 in Grapeland-October 28, 1975 in Coleman, buried at Brown Ranch, married Opal Miller, December 13, 1924 (see Miller-Collins).  They had two children:

        (6a) Darrell Lee, October 14, 1926-January 3, 1984 in Graham, buried Brown Ranch, had two children: Kay (Rhoades) who has two children, Stephen and Kenny (now lives in Oklahoma); and Randall L., who lives in Den-ton. Darrell married (2) Doris (Dixon) Weightman, December 26, 1968 in Hansford County, had 6 step-daughters.

        (6b) Minnie Lou, April 1931, died in infancy, buried Brown Ranch. Lum and his family moved from Coleman to Gruver in 1942 and operated a dry cleaning plant until their retirement. They then moved back to Coleman; Opal now resides in Graham.

     (7) William V. (Will), June 9, 1901, married Minnie Grace Pender, September 15, 1934, have one son, Gary, May 6, 1940. Will moved his family to Corpus Christi in 1943. He worked for Sinclair Oil Company until his retirement. Minnie Grace died December 16, 1980, buried in Corpus Christi. Will still resides there.

     (8) Henry Lee, November 28, 1902, never married. He served in the Army during WW II, but saw no foreign duty. When he returned from the service he continued farming with his father and brother, Claud. He died at his home in Fisk, May 7, 1981, buried at Brown Ranch.

     (9) Ruby Baker, May 26, 1904, married Elwood Hamilton, September 25, 1925 (see Zion Cornelius).  They lived near the Fisk community all their married life.  Elwood farmed and also worked in the oil fields.  They had six children:

        (9a) Audrey Elizabeth, July 13, 1927, married Bennie Clyde (Pat) Whitfield, July 14, 1945 in Coleman (see Dee Whitfield).  They have two children, Judy Pat and Bradley Wade, live in Odessa;

        (9b) Alton, March 17, 1930, not married and lives in the Fisk community, in the family home and farms.   He served in Korea during the Korean War;

        (9c) Laverne Adell, August 1936, moved to Abilene after graduating from high school and married Charles Horn, November 28, 1954.  He died February 13, 1978, buried in Elmwood Memorial Park in Abilene.  Laverne still resides in Abilene.  They had six children: Michael, Kay, Charles (Rusty), Brenda, Terri and Robin;

        (9d) Viva Joy, September 23, 1934, moved to Fort Worth after her graduation from high school, married (1) Van Richmond, December 31, 1960.  He died July 21, 1968, buried at Blanket.  Joy married (2) Bill Chennault, March 12, 1971.  They have two sons, James Stephen and John Lee, live in West Monroe, Louisiana;

        (9e) Virgil Mack, October 28, 1936, married (1) Jodie Hines, March 4, 1957. They bought a place in the Voss community where they lived until Jodie's death in January, 1977.  He had two step-sons, Johnny and Ronald Earl Ray.  He and Jodie had two sons: Gaylon, July 7, 1959 and Stacey, August 13, 1962.  The boys all attended Mozelle school. Mac married (2) Carol Cullum, February 9, 1982 and live near Fisk;

        (9f) Ronnie Kent, December 4, 1942, is not married and lives in the family home. He works in the oilfields.  He served in the Army during the sixties.  All the Hamilton children were born in Coleman County, raised in the Fisk community, attended Brown Ranch and Mozelle schools.  Elwood died January 29, 1973, buried at Brown Ranch.  Ruby resides in Coleman.

     (10) Nota Exar, December 28, 1905, married James E. (Jim) Snider, May 25, 1935.  They lived most of their married life in and around Fisk.  In the 1940's Jim bought the service station at Fisk and operated it until his death February 10, 1970, buried at Brown Ranch.  Their children:

        (10a) Vance Neal, September 19, 1936, married Irene Helton, May 13, 1957 and have lived in Spearman since 1958.  They have four children: Bobby Neal, Nota Marie, Billy Vance and Jimmy DeWayne;

        (10b) Barbara Ann, December 10, 1939, married William Cecil Keeney in Brownwood, May 5, 1961.  They moved to Abilene and then to Sweetwater where they livc presently.  They have one child, Gregory James.  Vance and Barbara attended Brown Ranch and Mozelle schools.

     (11) Earl E., January 21, 1908, married Winnie Cathey, December 13, 1941. Delbert, January 31, 1943, was the only child.  Earl was sent to Italy to serve during WWII where he was killed January 6, 1944, buried at Netunno National Cemetery.  Winnie reared her son in Coleman County and taught in Santa Anna school for many years.  She is now retired and lives in Coleman.  Delbert married Sandra Elaine Waller, September 26, 1964.  He is in the Air Force.  They have two sons, Kurt Darren and Karl Earl (see Will Davis).

        (12) Austin Glenn, September 10, 1910, married Bertha Cathey, December 8, 1938. Their children:

        (12a) Bettie Glen, October 31, 1939, married Ira Neal, December 24, 1956, have three daughters: Jutuan, Kendall and Tina;

        (12b) Roy Lynn, February 8, 1945, married Bettie Frances Harmon, August 20, 1966, have one son, Mare, and reside in Snyder.  In 1918, the family moved to Kermit, then to Andrews in 1951 where they lived until Glenn's retirement.   They returned to Coleman and lived until the latter part of June, 1983, moving to Snyder.
