George Thomas, August 16, 1877 - March 2, 19S1, and Stella Anna (Beaver)
Lawrence, January 30, 1881 - December 7, 1941, were parents of George Burnice,
the third of six children - three girls and three boys. George Thomas and
Stella Anna were both buried at Zephyr (see John Albert Lawrence).
George Burnice was born December 19, 1910 at Trickham, moved with his family
to Zephyr, when he was five years old. He attended Blanket Springs,
Zephyr, and Pleasant Ridge schools. In October 1934, he moved to
Gouldbusk, where he was employed on the ranch of his Aunt Cellia Kennedy.
George Burnice Lawrence and Nita Mae Scott married April 14, 1935, at
the Rockwood Baptist Church, born March 6, 1917 in Melvin, the only daughter
of John Thompson and Vera Bernice (Higgins) Scott (see John T. Scott).
She attended school at Melvin and Gouldbusk, graduated from Melvin High
School in 1933. She also attended John Tarleton College at Stephenville.
They lived on the Kennedy place for several months after they were married.
That summer he worked at the Dolph Smith thresher.
In October 1935, the Lawrences bought 112 acres of land at Fisk, from
Freeman Lindsley Investment Company of Fort Worth. Burnice owned
some pretty white-face cows and calves and sold them to make a down payment
on the land. The farming was done the first year with Mr. Scott’s
team and plows. During the second year, Burnice bought a W C Allis
Chalmers tractor to do the farming. They raised a good garden each
year and did lots of canning. They raised chickens to eat, kept laying
hens and sold eggs to the hatchery, and raised turkeys for market in the
fall. Through the years they bought cows and sold milk and cream
each week. Eventually sheep were added on the farm. In 1942, Burnice and
Nita bought 108 acres of land from the Crowder Estate and moved over on
the Fisk-Mozelle Road. After a tank was dug, running water was piped
to the house. In 1947, they built a new home where the old one had
stood. The Lawrences bought 338 acres of land two and one-half miles
southwest of Gouldbusk from hen parents, when they retired from farming.
In 1966, another 971 acres of land which joined the land at Fisk was purchased.
This was the Nell Rude Place. Through the years, Burnice leased more
land and bought more cattle and sheep. He bought several combines.
These he used to combine his own grain, and also combined for the public
for a number of years.
