Two brothers, George Gustav and Ernest Koenig, were early settlers
in Coleman County. They were born in Marksukl, Germany to Freiderrika
and Adam Koenig. Their mother, left a widow after the death of her
husband and two other sons, was a general store keeper in the small village.
After hearing about Texas from a Texan visiting in Germany, she disposed
of her holdings and bought passage for herself and her two sons, George,
seventeen years old and Ernest, fourteen years old, on the fastest ship
afloat. They landed at New York in August 1882, then entrained for
Brenham, Washington County, Texas.
(1) George Gustav was born August 17, 1865. Sometime
in his twenties, he married first Clara Leihr and to this union was born
three sons, George, Ben and Edwin and one daughter, Madie. He came
to Coleman County from Brenham and bought a farm seven miles north of Burkett
in December 1897. Clara died in June 1898. He married second
Elizabeth Bertha Packlipp in Brownwood, in December 1899. They had
four children, two sons Alfred John (see Elijah DeBusk) and Arnold Ernest
and two daughters Elsie Bertha and Alwena. George Gustav died November
9, 1921 and Bertha, in 1946. Some of his descendants still live in
Coleman County.
(2) Ernest, February 12, 1868, came to Coleman County in 1891 at the
age of twenty-three, settling near Echo. Seven years later he married
Mary Delia Bolieu in Coleman on October 16, 1898. They reared three
sons, Willie, who lived in Coleman County until 1974, Albert and Ralph
and two daughters, Alma and Alice. Ernest helped clear the public
right of way from Burkett to Coleman and retired from farming in 1946.
He passed away May 10, 1961, and Mary Delia, February 24, 1962, both buried
in Burkett.
