William F. (Will) Kegans was born December 1, 1865 in Bell County, Texas, the son of John and Clara (Pevenhouse) Kegans, married Mary Alice Woods, born April 10, 1868 - died March 14, 1922, on December 31, 1885 at Temple.  Will died in 1945, both he and Mary are buried in West Hill Cemetery in Sherman.  They came to Coleman County in 1889-1890 and settled west of Coleman, near Hords Creek crossing and Bowen School.  They bought land from Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Close, October 26, 1891.  Will farmed and also worked at the McWilliams Gin at Glen Cove.  They had seven children:
(1) Loy C., born February 13, 1887, married Miss Jessie Mitchell, born May 17, 1882 in San Marcos - died June 12, 1964, both buried in Greenleaf Cemetery in Brownwood, on December 25, 1906 in Coleman County.  Jessie was the daughter of Billy Mitchell and Elizabeth Stapleton.  Loy and Jess had one son, Gene.

(2) Roy C., born March 29, 1888 - died May 5, 1952, married Miss Myrtle Cates, January 3, 1909 in Coleman County.  Myrtle died October 10, 1954, both are buried in Abilene.  Two daughters: (2a) Stella, born October 20, 1909, married Houston Oney, born June 21, 1908 - died November 19, 1973, buried Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens in San Angelo.  Two sons: (a) William Clint (Dub), born March 3, 1929.  Two daughters: Carolyn Kay Hughes (two children, Jenefer and Dexter Shook) and Sheri Durham (one son, Dustin Martin Durham); (b) Billy Jack (B. J.), born August 7, 1931 - died November 10, 1978 in Grants, New Mexico.  Two sons: Mike (two children, Justin Brice and Crestin Michelle) and Mark (two children, Billy Jack and Amanda Kay).  (2b) Agnes (Staley), born August 28, 1912, now lives in Vernon.  Both girls were born in Coleman County.

(3) Lottie Mae, born September 6, 1889, married Charley H. Douglas (see Douglass-Spruce).

(4) Nellie L., born May 15, 1892, married Clem Calhoon.  They had no children, both are buried in West Hill Cemetery in Sherman.

(5) Condy P., born November 15, 1895, married Lillie (?).  He is buried in Houston.

(6) Neva, September 26, 1900, married Hoarce Jeter and they adopted a son.  Hoarce is deceased and Neva lives in Richardson.

(7) Madge Alice (Maggie), November 24, 1904, married Byron McNeil and they have a daughter.  They lived in Dallas, but have recently moved to California where their daughter lives.

Will’s parents, John Kegans, born April 17, 1817 - died December 22, 1897, and Clarinda (Clara) Pevenhouse, born June 19, 1824 - died April 14, 1898, both buried in Coleman, also came to the county, along with two brothers, James Bingham and J. H., and a sister, Nellie Gray (Nell) and her husband, Lucien Love.  They all came about the same time, in the early 1880’s, and settled first in the same area.

James Bingham Kegans, born December 22, 1847 - died July 12, 1935, and his wife, Eliza E., born January 13, 1854 - died July 26, 1924, are both buried in Coleman.  Eliza was the daughter of Ely Williams and Mary Thompson.  On the 1900 Coleman County Census, they had seven children living at home.  They were:

(1) George A., born May 9, 1876 - died November 26, 1959, married Eula May Thompson, born August 20,1878 - died July 6, 1917, both buried at Silver Valley, on September 27, 1903 Coleman County (see Moses Thompson).

(2) Clara, born April, 1878, married Henry C. Pair, December 19, 1900 in Coleman County.

(3) Jennie, born March, 1880, married T. E. Sutherland, December 7, 1902 in Coleman County.

(4) William O., born March 13, 1882 - died September 10, 1908, buried in Coleman, married Eva Gilstrap, November 27, 1901 in Coleman.  They had a son, born and died September 6, 1908, buried in Coleman.

(5) Elsie,  born May 1884, married Turner D. Gann, January 26, 1906 in Coleman County.

(6) Joseph B., born August, 1886, married Laura Harrison, January 23, 1915 in Coleman County.

(7) Nora A., born August 19, 1889 - died January 20, 1920, buried in Coleman.

William Shaw, who later married his niece, Lenore (Nona) Love, (see Lucien Love) and Henry C. Pair were employed by James Bingham Kegans.
(8) Eli, a son, born July, 1871, and his wife, Elmira, and two children, Bertha and David, were living in the same area.

(9) John Percy Kegans, born February, 1873, and his wife, Carry (Carrie) L. Spalding, born July, 1877 (they married September 9, 1896 in Coleman County) and two sons, Willis R., born August 1897, and Marion A., born September 1899, lived around Glen Cove.  Carry L.’s uncle, George L. Roberts, was living with them.  Mary E. Kegans married Arthur E. Craig, October 14, 1896 in Coleman County.

J. H. Kegans married Miss A. E. Burnett, August 15, 1885 in Coleman County.  A son, Dat (Dot), died September 29, 1911 in Abilene, buried at Atoka.  Services were held in the R. R. Bush home near Atoka.

Lucen Love, born January 31, 1852 - died October 17, 1909, and Nellie Gray Kegans, born January 3, 1861 - died February 26, 1949, both buried in Coleman, (see Lucien Love), had twelve children:

(1) Daisy D., born March 1, 1879 - died June 21, 1910, buried in Coleman, married R. D. Craig of Glen Cove, born July 11, 1874 - died June 10, 1950, buried Glen Cove.  They had three children: Agnes, Louise and Lucien. 

(2) Lenore (Nona), born August 1880 - died 1934, married William H. Shaw, born 1875 - died 1954, of Georgia.  They had four children: Baby Shaw, born March 15, 1904 - died April 6, 1904; Olene; Nell and W. H., Jr., born 1907 - died 1948.  They moved to San Angelo.  Nona, Wm. H., Sr., Baby Shaw and W. H., Jr. are all buried in Fairmount Cemetery in San Angelo.

(3) Carrie, born February 3, 1882 - died July 16, 1972, married J. T. Blair, born June 6, 1876 - died July 14, 1949, both are buried in Coleman (see J.T. Blair).

(4) Tassie (Tas), born July 1883, married May Ratliff and they had three children: Sam, Kate and Anna Lee (Calvert).

(5) Eugene (Gene), born June 1885 - died 1967, married Bess Brooks, born 1885 - died 1958, both buried in Coleman.  They had no children (see George Washington Brooks).

(6) Robert (Bob), born November 1886, married Nannie Collins of Coleman.  They had no children (see L. E. Collins).  Bob is buried in Ada, Oklahoma.

(7) Lonzo (Lon) Henry, born November 29, 1888 - died February 2, 1972, married Maggie Viola Jameson, April 27, 1911 (see Nelson A. Jameson).  They had two children: (7a) Sarah Nell, born March 3, 1915, married John Aubrey Carroll of Valera, born January 28, 1913 - died August 22, 1970 in El Paso, on February 18, 1957.  They had two children: (a) Linda (Mrs. Peter Jenny) lives in Denver, Colorado; (b) Jimmy, lives in Ennis (see Carroll-Moser).  Sarah Nell now lives in Denver.  (7b) Lucien, born June 15, 1917, married Coy Sue Coleman, July 27, 1946 (see Thomas McDonald [Bud] Coleman).  They have two children: (a) Clay, born December 18, 1951, married Sherry Laine Thompson, August 20, 1976.  They have one son, Cole Mark, born September 20, 1983 in San Angelo.  They live in San Angelo where Sherrie teaches school and Clay is a certified welder (see John Mark Thompson); (b) Molly, born September 24, 1956, married Brett Autry (see Autry Family).  Lon, Maggie and John A. are buried in Coleman.

(8) Losson (Loss), born May 1891, married Etha Waldrip of Coleman.  Two children: Billie and Pauline.  Loss is buried in Beeville.

(9) Estelle, born February 22, 1894, married V. B. Curl who is buried in Coleman.  They had no children.

(10) H. Boley “Red,” born August, 1895 - died April 1, 1984, buried in Uvalde, married Nell Stafford of Coleman.  They had two daughters: Peggy (Osuna) of Danville, California and Janie (Hitt) of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

(11) Coleman (Coley), born 1897 - died 1918, buried at sea, was in the U.S. Navy.

(12) Mamie, born February 23, 1905, married Lamar B. Evans of Coleman, born June 23, 1904 - died December 16, 1968, buried in Coleman.  They had no children.
