My grandfather, Isaac Keeney, was born May 3, 1853 in St. Charles County,
Missouri, son of Michael and Cinnia Ellen Bacus Keeney. He married
about 1876, in Bell County, Texas, Charity Elizabeth Hawk of Temple (born
1861 - died 1937). He died November 29, 1917, both buried in Coleman.
He bought approximately four sections of land about eight miles east of
Coleman on Hords Creek. He paid $13,000 in cash for this land.
He moved his family here and took up farming and ranching.
Isaac and Charity Keeney had ten children: George, born July 5, 1877
(see Helton); Mike, born December 28, 1879, died May 26 1924 (see William
Michael Keeney); Bill, in 1881, died young with no family; Lela, born
1883 - died 1978; Roger (Doc), born September 29, 1885 - died January 20,
1972 (see J. F. Griffith); Delmer, no data available; Don, born December
28, 1887 (date of death unavailable); Lee, born May 15, 1889 - died May
9, 1965; Thomas Ernest, born December 22, 1893 - died July 14, 1969; and
Zachary, born May 9 1901 - died October 28, 1975 (see Henry Lobstein).
I was born October 13, 1920 in Coleman County in the old original house
that Grandpa Isaac purchased about 1900. My father, Thomas Ernest
Keeney, married (1st) Georgia Lobstein (see Lobstein), December 20, 1919.
I had two brothers, James Franklin (born November 19, 1923) and Hayden
Edward, (born May 10, 1922 – died February 23, 1923). My father married
(2nd) Lillian Roberds. I have one half-brother, LeRoy (see LeRoy
Keeney) and one half-sister, Ernestine Elizabeth (see Ernestine Dockery).
We attended school at Lone Star and Cross Roads.
I lived and worked in Coleman County until I was seventeen years old.
I joined the C.C.C.’s May 7, 1937 and went to Roswell, New Mexico.
On October 13, 1939, I joined the United States Army at Fort Bliss, Texas.
I was discharged October 13, 1945, as Staff Sergeant. I married (1st)
Mary N. Neergaard, June 6, 1943, at Seattle, Washington. We had four
children: John Richard, May 10, 1945; Georgia Ann, April 16, 1949; Mary
Christine, January 16, 1956; and Katherine Elizabeth, July 15, 1959.
After being discharged from the Army, I worked as a mechanic and machinist.
On July 30, 1964 we moved to Othello where I took on the job of building
the biggest spearmint and peppermint farm in the world. I divorced
my first wife and married (2nd) LaDawn Woolley Maw, November 10, 1973 at
Winnemucca, Nevada. In November 1977 we started an automotive machine
shop in Warden, Washington. We built our home in Warden in November
1978.
