John Robert Keeling, born December 7, 1844 in Palestine - died September
20, 1886 at Glen Cove, buried there, the son of Nathaniel Wilson (died
January 16, 1878) and Mary Susan (McClanahan) Keeling (died August 9, 1856,
both buried in Palestine, Texas, enlisted in the Army, Company G., First
Texas Infantry, Confederate States Army, June 23, 1861 in Palestine.
On April 9, 1865, he (then a Corporal) was paroled at Appomattox Court
House, Virginia, when General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General U.S.
Grant of the northern forces. On February 8, 1872, John Robert married
Miss Mary Ella Averitt (Averett), daughter of John C. and Helen Ann (Crocker)
Averitt (see John C. Averitt). They had eight children:
(1) Nathaniel Wilson, born February 9, 1873 in Fairfleld -
died July 24, 1933 in Hale Center, married Ossie Ola Powell, February 9,
1892 at Glen Cove. She died February 23, 1945 at Plainview, buried there.
Children: (1a) Infant son, deceased; (1b) Infant daughter, deceased; (1c)
Thomas Earl, married (1st) Mrs. Carrie Holloway; (2nd) Mrs. Hester Lee;
(1d) Charley Wilson married Violet Helzer. Four children: (a) James
Barbour married Edith Marker, two children, Robert and Russell. (b)
Charles W. Jr. married Margie Bailey, one son, Jon Scott. (c) Vera
Mae married Gerald Stevens, two children, Jon and Gary. (d) Lavon
June; (1e) Infant son, deceased; (1f) Ruby Mae married James N. Montgomery
and had Mary Lee; (1g) Vera Mae, deceased; (1h) Annie Lou married Ira Boyd.
Five children: Laverne, Mildred Christine, Ira Jean, Shirley Ann and Carolyn
Kay; (1i) R. C. married (1st) Lamoine Shipman, (2nd) Esta Lue Spann and
had Margaret Ann; (1j) Powell, married Linnie Robertson and had Alma Joyce;
(1k) Una Mabel married Jesse B. Bell, now deceased.
(2) Mary Berta, born February 11, 1875 in Stephenville - died July 26,
1949 in San Angelo, buried there, married John R. Sparks, July 27, 1891
(see John R. Sparks).
(3) John Robert, Jr., born January 12, 1877 Coleman - died June 18,
1948 San Angelo, buried there, married Emma Lowe in June, 1900 at Santa
Anna (see Milton S. Lowe). Two sons: Coy Milton and Rex Edward.
(4) Infant daughter, stillborn, about 1879, buried in Glen Cove.
(5) Una Frances, born September 17, 1882 Glen Cove - died October 1,
1928 San Angelo, buried Glen Cove, married Edward Silas Gilbert, August
26, 1900 at Glen Cove. He died October 1, 1928 at San Angelo, buried
there. Four children: (5a) Keeling Taylor, deceased; (5b) Stella
Mary, married Nathaniel Lawrence Quick, a son, Nathaniel L. Jr.; (5c) Lou
Anne married Yale Rezin Davis, two children, Yale Jr. and Una Naomi; (5d)
Edward Rucker married Flora Mae Bishop, two children, Edward Lee and Flora
Ann.
(6) Luther Rice, born February 2, 1882 - died October 5,1956 in New
Mexico, married Sidney Elizabeth Hutchinson, born March 15, 1887 - died
November 18, 1945 in New Mexico, on December 20, 1905. Nine children:
(6a) Basil, deceased; (6b) Mary Lee married Benjamin Chester Templeton.
Five children: (a) Floyd Luther married Vinette Kinch, two children, Virgil
and Celestia. (b) Joyce Aileen married Elwyn Spaulding, two children,
Carol and Kenneth. (c) Shirley Ann married Charles Cyr, a son, Robert
Edmond. (d) Lawrence Robert married Alene King, a son, Ross Wayne.
(e) Benjamin David married Lillie Mae Loigmon; (6c) John R. married Dollie
Lea Barker, two children, Dione (Mrs. Tom) Iles and Linda (Mrs. Roger Allan)
Hale; (6d) Paul Averitt married Nada Wiggins, two children, Lavina Jane
(Mrs. Cloyd W.) Lovitt and Myra Jean; (6e) Conway Douglas married Margaret
Montgomery, children, Douglas Maynart, Sidney Elaine and Rodney; (6f) Opal
Earl married Grant W. Milligan. Children: Jacqueline (Mrs. Marlin) Hardin,
Marlin Grant and Shirley Ann; (6g) Virginia lone married Richard E. Howard.
Children: Sidney Elizabeth, Richard Jr. and Lucy Ann; (6h) June Frances
Eileen married Guy H. McMurry. Children: Judith Ann, Guy Conrad,
Charles Stevens and Gary Thomas; (6i) Berta Maxine married Robert Allen
Barnes. Children: Robert Kirley, Rollind Clifford, Laula Louise,
John Kerrin and Peter Michael.
(7) Annie Stella, born February 4, 1884 Glen Cove - died December 15,
1972 San Angelo, buried there, never married.
(8) Roy Wallace, born January 1886 - died May 15, 1893 at Glen Cove,
buried there.
It seems that the Keelings came to Coleman County with the Averitts (Averetts)
in the fall of 1876 and settled first at Oak Vale, a post office and stagecoach
inn operated by Averitt.
