ENOCH AND CYNTHIA ETNA ADAMS

Enoch, the eldest child of W. W. and Louisa Fiveash Hunter (see W.
W. Hunter), was born in Coleman County May 20, 1873, and named for
his grandfather, Enoch Fiveash. He married Cynthia Etna Adams January
30, 1895. They farmed part of his father’s property in Coleman and
Brown counties until 1915, when they moved to Terry County. Enoch
engaged in farming in the Gomez community until his death October 16, 1943.
Etna continued to maintain the home in Brownfield, until her death January
18, 1968, both buried in Brownfield. Their children were all born
in Coleman and Brown counties. The family were faithful members of
the Eureka Baptist Church, located in eastern Coleman County. He
helped build the church on land which his father had deeded for a church
site. He also helped build a bridge over Mud Creek between the church
and the Hunter home. Enoch and Etna Hunter had seven children, six
of whom lived to maturity. They were:
(1) Idahlia, born November 3, 1895, married Raymond A. Simms,
July 31, 1921 in Gomez. Raymond served Terry County as County Judge
in four decades: 1930s through the 1960s and returned to office in 1970
to complete the term of an incumbent who died in office. He has operated
their farms since he left public life. Their children: Harold O’Neil,
October 29, 1922, married Charlotte Dial, September 28, 1946; and Mary
Raye, April 15, 1926, married Young E. Douglass, February 7, 1945 and is
in Denver, Colorado. Idahlia and Raymond, Harold and Charlotte, make
their home in Brownfield.
(2) Mary Louise, born November 10, 1896, married Pleaman Cruger, born
February 15, 1889, died May 1, 1946. Their children: Velma (Mrs.
Willard) Hinkle of Waco; Willie Mae Skinner living in Michigan; Hazel,
who died young; Helen (Mrs. Joe) Taylor; Pleamon Junior, who is career
Air Force. Pleaman Cruger, Sr., and his daughter, Hazel, are buried
in Santa Anna. Mary Lou, Joe and Helen Taylor, live in Santa Anna.
(3) Willie Ethel, born March 11, 1898, married Frank Jordan, December
11, 1939. They operated an automobile agency in Brownfield, and engaged
in farming. Frank died March 13, 1962, Ethel December 27, 1981, both
are buried in Brownfield. No children.
(4) Horace Eugene, born July 30, 1899, died March 25, 1901, at Mud Creek.
(5) Roy Oliver, born December 18, 1900, married Dorothy Hulen in 1928.
Roy died on April 30, 1960. Their only child, John Oliver was born
April 4, 1930, married Mary Belle “Dusty” Rhodes, November 11, 1950.
Their daughter, Jane (Mrs. John) Higdon, and the twins Mikel Victor and
Patrick David Campbell born February 15, 1953 presently are living in Amarillo.
John was killed in an automobile accident August 5, 1954. Dusty married
(2nd) William Campbell who adopted the children, and (3rd) Robert Bolton.
John and his father, Roy Hunter, are buried in Amarillo.
(6) Bluford Lee, September 26, 1902, married Frankie Morris Sevier,
October 30, 1943. Their son, Roy Lee Hunter, born August 30, 1947,
married Anne Torrey Gwin March 3,1973. All live in Amarillo.
(7) Bessie Irene, February 12, 1904, married (lst) James Black on May
25, 1929. Their daughter, Cynthia Ann, was born April 20, 1932, and
married Jack Tankersley in 1949. She taught school in Texas and New
Mexico for over forty years. She married (2nd) Bert Wright in 1952.
Irene died January 6, 1983, and is buried in Brownfield.
