Phy Hughes was the son of William and Elizabeth (Mansel) Hughes.
His parents were married in Putnam County, Tennessee in 1834. He
was the eleventh child of a family of twelve, born September 14, 1858,
in Gentry, Tennessee. Thirsa Young was the daughter of Van and Jane
(Williams) Young, the oldest of three children, born November 8, 1858,
in Chestnut Mound, Tennessee.
Phy Hughes and Thirsa Young met at writing school in Gentry; they were
married in 1888. Their children were Alvin Escar (March 27, l889
- October, 1893); Robert Lee (December 28, 1891 - March 21, 1913); Jewell
Elizabeth (April 5, 1894); Laura Pearl (March 3, 1897 - October 24, 1953).
They came with their family to Texas in 1900, arriving by train at their
new home in Whitewright. They farmed in that area until moving to
the Liberty Community in 1906. A farm was purchased from G. W. Redding,
October 17, 1906 and operated by the family a number of years. The
farm is now owned by their granddaughter, Rosemary Parsons of Coleman.
Phy passed away November 9, 1930, Thirsa February 24, 1943, both buried
in Santa Anna.
The Hughes children attended Liberty School. Lee graduated from
Santa Anna High School in 1912. Jewell attended Santa Anna High School
and Daniel Baker College. Later, she taught at Bee Branch (1915-1917)
and Old Silver Valley (1917 - 1918). Pearl graduated from Santa Anna
High School in 1916, attended Howard Payne College. During the years
of 1917 and 1918, she taught school at Antioch. In 1919 and 1920,
she taught at Liberty.
Jewell Hughes married Marshall Duggins, son of Samuel and Arizona (Kile)
Duggins, February 21, 1918, in Santa Anna (see Samuel Duggins and Jesse
E. Howard Families). He was stationed in the army at Camp Travis,
San Antonio during World War I. After the war, Jewell and Marshall
made their home in the Liberty Community. Two children were born:
Marjorie and Rosemary. Marjorie passed away May 10, 1923. Rosemary
attended schools at Liberty, Buffalo, and graduated from Coleman High School
in 1942. She received a B.S. and M. Ed. Degrees from Howard Payne
University.
Rosemary and Bennie Parsons, son of Clarence and Belle (Tabor) Parsons,
were married August 23, 1947. She taught in Amarillo, Coleman County,
and Coleman ISD retiring in 1980 after thirty-three years of teaching.
Bennie served in the Navy during World War II, worked for the Coleman Water
Department, and also had farming and ranching interests. He passed
away June 10, 1978. They had one daughter, Jan, born March 29, 1955.
She graduated from Coleman High School in 1973, received a B.S. and M.
Ed. Degrees from Angelo State University. Jan married Randy Ward,
August 25, 1974. Randy graduated from Brownwood High School and received
a B.S. in Agriculture from Tarleton State University. They currently
reside in San Angelo. Jan is employed as Educational Diagnostician with
the San Angelo ISD. Randy works for the Department of Agriculture
as a Soil Conservationist. Ryan, their son, was born July 11, 1975.
