John S. Hudson, born April 2, 1869, died April 19, 1965, and Nancy
C. (Humphrey) Hudson, born August 15, 1872, died January 20, 1936, moved
to Coleman County from Falls County around 1917. They first lived
in the Trickham community, later moving north of Coleman on the Morris
ranch. They had six children:
(1) Lillie, married Carl Williams of Santa Anna. They
had five children: Wilma, married Everett Powell, lives in Coleman; Sarah
married Joe Riggs, lives in Denver, Colorado; Maxine lives in Denton; Stewart
married Ruth Tatum of Santa Anna, lives in Dallas; and Carl Jr., married
Lois ?, lives in East Texas.
(2) Ethemore married Ruby Holland of Trickham. They had two children:
Thelma, married Neuman Smith, they live in Ballinger, and Walter lives
in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ethemore and Ruby are buried in Ballinger.
(3) Amanda married Elry Kelley, son of Thomas and Minnie (Sewell) Kelley.
They had three children: Dorothea Lee married Howard Quinn, live in Odessa;
Myrna Loy married James Steward, live in Coleman and Kenneth lives in Houston.
Amanda and Elry live in Coleman. Other children of Thomas and Minnie
are: Bessie, lives on the coast; Rutha Mae, lives in Big Spring; Arthur
(deceased) buried at Garden City, and Clyde, lives at Cross Plains.
Thomas and Minnie are buried in Coleman.
(4) Mary, born November 25, 1900, died September 23, 1974, married John
Maxwell of Coleman, two children: Lowell C. “Pete” and Martha Sue.
(5) Johnnie married Otis Johnigan, son of J. W. and Sarah (White) Johnigan
of Coleman. They had one son, Billy Glen, who married Barbara Sue
Brown (see Ward - Sewell). They have three children: Greg, Steve
and Suzette. Otis is buried in Coleman. Johnnie lives in Coleman.
Other children of J. W. and Sarah Johnigan are: (1) F. married Myrtle Zelner,
both buried at Coleman; (2) Rush “Dummy” was Constable of Coleman for many,
many years. He is buried in Brownwood; (3) Will and his wife, Georgie,
are buried at Ozona; (4) Ezery “Ez” is buried at Beaumont; (5) Ernest and
his wife, Juanita, are buried in Ada, Oklahoma; (6) Nepie married Barry
Bishop, both are buried at Coleman; (7) Mollie married Jesse Minor, both
buried at Coleman (see Rae - Minor); (8) Jennie married Fred Parker (see
David Frederick Parker); (9) Ellen married Henry Varner (see Varner Family).
(6) Ruby, born January 10, 1906, died August 6, 1981, married Hubert
Lee Stokes, born July 29, 1905, born December 20, 1980, son of John W.,
1881-1937, and Addie (Greer) Stokes, 1884-1949, of Talpa (see Cary Family).
They had two daughters: Patsy, married Benton Cassaday of Llano.
They have three children: Felicia; Angi Lea, born September 10, 1965, died
March 5, 1966; and Zane. They live at Talpa. Helen Jo, born
March 20, 1943, died March 6, 1964, married David Ross Dobbins. They
had two children: Dwayne and Helen (see Trull Family).
Mr. and Mrs. Hudson moved to the Talpa community around 1924 with two of
their daughters, Johnnie and Ruby. Their farm was about 3 ½
miles northeast of Talpa, bordered by Parkers, Stokes and Bouldins.
A nephew, Euclid Hudson, came and lived with them, attending Talpa school.
Later, two grandchildren came to live with them, Pete and Martha Sue Maxwell.
Mr. Hudson farmed with horses and mules, never using modern machinery.
Mrs. Hudson raised chickens, turkeys and a big garden; canning in the summer
for the following winter.
Pete Maxwell, born March 13, 1921 in Coleman, graduated from Talpa High
School in 1939. He was a great athlete and very active in the F.F.A.
He also attended Tarleton State and Texas A&M. He joined the
Army in 1941 and went to Officers Training School in Fort Benning, Georgia,
and, upon graduation, transferred to the paratroopers. 1st Lt. Lowell
C. (Pete) Maxwell was killed June 11, 1944, during the Normandy Invasion.
Martha Sue Maxwell attended school at Talpa and graduated from Coleman
High School. She married Major Whitfield of Fisk (see Dee Whitfield).
John S. and Nancy C. Hudson; Angi Lea Cassaday; Helen Jo Dobbins; Mary
Maxwell; John W. and Addie (Greer) Stokes; Hubert Lee and Ruby (Hudson)
Stokes, are all buried at Talpa.
