My grandfather, Alfred Jackson Horn, was born in Alabama in 1852.  He came to Texas soon after the Civil War.  They settled in Henrietta County.  He married Rachel Lenora Shelby in 1876; the Shelby family having moved to Texas from North Carolina about that time.  Nine children were born to this union, including my father, Dee Burton Horn, in 1883.  They moved to the old Audra community, north of Bradshaw, in 1889, where they broke out new land for farming.  My mother’s family, the J. G. Mayhews, came to the Drasco community about the same year.  My mother and dad were childhood sweethearts and married in 1903.  I was the sixth of seven children born to them.  He was a farmer/rancher.  Mattie died in 1960 and D.B. in 1968.

I was born in Wingate in 1917, finished high school at Miles and graduated from Howard Payne in 1939.  I taught band, orchestra and chorus at Bronte, Brownfield, McAllen, Kingsville, Deer Park and San Angelo.  In 1959, I received my master’s degree from Texas A & I in Kingsville.  In 1941, I married (1) Jackie Holt in Brownfield and we had two daughters: Jacqui Sue and Barbara Ann.  We were divorced in 1962, and in 1967, married (2) Ann Wilson of San Angelo.  Ann’s family and my family were neighbors in the 1930’s when we ranched south of Miles.  Both my daughters are married.  Jacqui and Larry Dooley have sons, Cary and Chris, and live in McAllen, while Bobbie and Jimmie have two daughters, Shana and Crissie and live in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

I retired from teaching in 1977 and to the ranch in Glen Cove.  Ann continued to work as executive secretary to the Vice President of Public Affairs for General Telephone Company of the Southwest.  She retired in January 1983, and has joined me at the ranch for longer periods than she was able to do before.  We maintain our house in San Angelo and it requires much care.  She is an avid gardener both there and at the ranch.  It is quite a change for both of us to be free from an 8 to 5 responsibility; I spent a lifetime in the music business and Ann as a secretary.

My brother, Burton, married Lola Crooks of Eldorado and they live in San Angelo, and had three children: Marie, Dee and Wanda Pearl; sister, Floy, married Ralph Ranson at Christoval and they were teachers in Dawson County for many years.  He also farmed in the community and lived in Lamesa.  They also have a ranch in Coleman County, the old Kelly and Close places west of town.  They had a son, Lynn, and two daughters, Martha Ann and Jean; brother, Victor, married Hazel Smith in San Angelo, however, they have lived in Midland most of their married life.  Their children are: Ronda, David, Vickie and Doug.  Victor has retired from business and Hazel is in real estate; sister, Beth, married Eugene Neighbors in California where they have spent their lives.  They have three boys, Paul, Phil and Doug.

Our ranch is the old Clay Willson place two miles south of Glen Cove.  We like the slower pace of Coleman and the friendly people of Coleman County.  Our activities are many and varied and the challenges of garden, yards, cattle and the general operation of the ranch keep us constantly involved.
