Oly Boston Hopper (January 28, 1890, in Alabama - January 25, 1962)
the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Hopper. The family moved to Waxahachie,
Texas. He met Gladys Viola Cox (born November 24, 1900) in Hill County.
They married in Rule, Haskell County on July 23, 1916. They lived
in Navarro County for three years. While there, two sons were born
in Blooming Grove; James Phillip (October 12, 1917) and J. D. (July 17,
1919).
In 1919, the crops suffered from the drought in Navarro County, so Mr.
Hopper moved his family to Coleman County where a bumper crop was ready
to be harvested. They lived on the Heddleston Lease northeast of
Fisk and had so much cotton to harvest, they were still picking cotton
in January. While living there, R. W. (March 23, 1921) and Lavada
(February 24, 1923) were added to the family. R. W. was injured at
birth, buried in Brown Ranch, where his father was later laid to rest.
About 1923, the crop was hailed out and Mr. Hopper worked for “Hop” O’Hair
north of Coleman. Mr. and Mrs. Ira Mauldin had the Hopper family
move in with them for one month in the fall of 1924 until a house could
be completed for them to live in. They worked for the Mauldins in
the cotton fields for almost 16 years. Four more children were born
while they lived here: Mattie Marie (stillborn May 16, 1927); Addie Lee
(May 4, 1928); Norma Grace (January 16, 1931); and Ira Lynn (June 20, 1933).
On Sunday afternoons all the local boys would gather for a baseball game
at the Hopper’s and they had to have another player, they allowed Lavada
to play as long as she stayed way out in the field. About 1939, the
family moved to the H. H. Hayes place northwest of Mozelle in the Starkweather
Community and Oly Loyd (January 26, 1940) was born.
They remained here until Oly’s health began to fail and they moved to
Coleman in 1957. Loyd finished his High School education in Mozelle
in 1958 by riding to school with a teacher, Bobbie McMinn. Mr. Hopper
passed away in 1962 and Mrs. Hopper stayed in Coleman until Lavada bought
a house in Valera, and she moved there in 1970. Later Lavada joined
her and they both live there. The children and their families:
