The family of S. C. “Charley” (1880-1948), and Nellie Holmans (1883-1962), grew up in the Burkett area.  Their home still stands south of the old Burkett school area.  Mr. Holmans worked as a blacksmith in his shop in downtown Burkett.  They had six children:
(1) Lee, October 1, 1904 - October 30, 1904.

(2) Willie, June 19, 1906 - October 17, 1961, married Edith Martin (deceased) and had four children: Charles Lee, Christine, Willine and Ronnie.

(3) Opal, October 25, 1910 - October 8, 1970, married Luther Porter and had three sons: Alvin Lee, Roy Dale and Donald Ray (see Andrew Porter).

(4) Jesse, May 5, 1914 - January 27, 1981, married Juanita Perkins and had two sons, one died at birth and Duane.

(5) Vera, March 30, 1917 - December 21, 1982, married Clarence Porter who died February 2, 1984 (see Andrew Porter).

(6) Willard, August 8, 1922 - March 10, 1969, attended Burkett school and played on their well known basketball teams.  He graduated in 1939.  He married Evelyn Hill, born January 3, 1921, on May 20, 1942 in Coleman, the daughter of Leslie, April 12, 1887 - April 6,1962, and Minnie Ola (Howe) Hill, October 21, 1885 - July 1, 1958, living south of Burkett on part of the original D. W. Howe land (see John Howe).  Evelyn attended Independence school the first seven grades, then transferred to Burkett where she was active in basketball and graduated in 1938.  After their marriage, they moved to a house on the Willis Connley farm, where Willard worked as a farm hand until the fall of 1943.  A son, Jimmie Darrell, was born September 1, 1943.  Two weeks later, an oil stove exploded and the couple lost all their possessions in the fire.  The family then moved to the Alex Powell ranch east of Coleman in October, 1943.  Willard took care of show cattle along with some farm work.  They moved again to the Bowen Hereford farm west of Coleman where he also looked after cattle.

In 1945, the Holmans moved into Coleman and Willard went to work at Clark Auto Parts, which he bought in 1968. A short time later, a daughter, Karen Kay, was born July 17, 1946.  Willard was a member of the Kiwanis Club.  His hobby was amateur radio and he was a member of the Coleman Radio Club.  Their were members of the Church of Christ, where Willard served as a deacon and song leader many years.  He is buried in Burkett.

The children grew up and attended the Coleman schools.  Jimmie graduated in 1961, attended Lubbock Christian College two years and then attended Texas Tech until he joined the Air Force in 1967, married Myra Siburt (a former Coleman resident) August 31, 1968 in Monahans.  They have a daughter, Melissa Lynn, born July 18, 1972, live in Abilene where Myra teaches and Jim remains in the service.  Karen graduated in 1964, attended Cisco Junior College one year, then began her career with General Telephone in 1965.  She married Robert Kenneth Magee, June 29, 1970 in Lovington, New Mexico.  They have a son, Robert Kelley, born January 10, 1972, and live in San Angelo where both are employed by General Telephone.

Evelyn married Luther Porter of Burkett October 11, 1971 (see Andrew Porter).  Evelyn stayed with the parts business until January 1972, when she sold her interest to Archie Slate and moved to San Angelo in April 1972, to begin work for Landers Automotive.
