Richard Holloway was born May 1, 1911 in Ennis, Ellis County, Texas,
the son of Robert and Martha (Wooley) Holloway. Richard had been
a resident of Coleman County since 1925. He began work at the hospital
in Coleman on January 6, 1929, a career that lasted over 49 years.
He was housekeeping supervisor at the time of his death December 13, 1978,
buried in Coleman. Richard also worked several nights a week at other
business in Coleman, one being Life of the Southwest. His children
would also help with his extra hours of employment as they became old enough.
At the Chamber of Commerce Banquet held in 1977, Richard was presented
with a special appreciation award plaque for his service to the community
and the hospital. He served six years on the Central Texas Opportunity
advisory committee and board of directors and two years for the Head Start
program. He was also a worker with the fund drive for the American
Cancer Society. Richard was a member of Mount Calvary Church of God
in Christ in Coleman where he was a deacon and assistant minister.
Richard and Eva Mae were married May 1, 1960. Children: Theodore
James, Richard Jr., John Henry, Shirley, Deborah and Angelia; some who
have graduated from Coleman High School. Eva Mae became an LVN and
nurses at the hospital in Coleman.
Tommie Holloway, November 7, 1901-August 31, 1968, buried in Coleman,
a brother to Richard, also worked at the hospital in Coleman. Tommie
died as a result of a car-truck wreck near Gatesville which took the life
of another Coleman resident, Lige Brisby (born August 15, 1892 - died September
2, 1968, buried in Coleman, served in WW II. Another long time resident
of the Negro community died in this time period, Peter (Pete) W. Roe (born
March 12, 1892 - died September 4, 1968 (in local hospital), served in
WW I. Pete operated shoe shine stands in several barber shops in
Coleman for many years. |
